    Hi

I've been looking at vans lately. I want to trade my 2001 focus saloon ghia for a van. I want to know is there any major problems with the opel 1.3l diesel engine. I was told not to take one if it was free by one mechanic but maybe this was because he wanted to sell me something else. I had a 1.7l version a few years ago and it was great.
    Any advice appreciated.

Do NOT buy a Combo. I had one a few years ago from new. From day one there was nothing but trouble with it. Turbo, alternator, electrics and lots more.
The company ended up giving it back to the dealer.
My mate who also one is currently having trouble with his and it's been in the garage for the past two weeks.

The model before the 1.3 version was a great van, I had one of those too and never had any trouble with it.

That backs up what I suspected. I'm going to keep an eye out for a clean 1.7l I think. I've had a few berlingos. They won't let you down but the combo is definitely a nicer drive. thanks

The 1.7 diesel engine in the (pre 04 ?) Combos is an Isuzu lump, generally rated highly. The 1248cc diesel is from Fiat. Delivers about 90bhp from a 1.3 diesel which is impressive. Headgaskets go, timing chains rattle. Had to do the turbo on one a while back. Secondhand 1.3 diesel engines are hard to get and expensive, indicating high demand.

I'd buy one if I was getting it cheap enough ... everything has a price !

I think I remember reading somewhere that 1.3 cdti has a tendancy to fill the sump with diesel in botched attemps at DPF regeneration? Highly stressed little motor in a van, not surprised it eats its own head gasket.

I'm on my second one now. Bought first, a 05 in 06 and it never gave any hassle. Traded in for a 10 a few months back. So far so good

AFAIK, the Isuzu engine was dropped from about 1998 onwards (I may be wrong)

I had one in a '96 Combo and although there was no turbo it was a great engine for fuel and reliability

I had a 99 Combo with the 1.7 Isuzu diesel engine, it never missed a beat and I was very happy with it. Only got rid of it because our first born was on his way and we needed a car. I still miss it.

think most of the vans dont have a DPF, if you do buy one and the DPF starts to give trouble cut it out are reprograme the ECU, we have one as run around van in work often carries a barrel of oil too never gave any bother

The Opel 1.7 engines made by Isuzu, after 98 (Isuzu type and Opel type fitted to different models pre 98), up to and including 06 Astra. We did an engine swop in a 06 Astra 1.7 CDTi recently and even the clutch disc had the Isuzu logo on it.
