How to maintain fairness in wifi use?

I am on a shared wifi network and seem to lose any connection after a short period of time, I have already changed the wireless frequency band to one that doesn't conflict with those nearby.

I think someone is torrenting on the network and hogging it, I have access to the logs, how would I recognise such activity? There are "upnp" events for this persons ip every 30 seconds or so, what would this mean?

Is there a way I can set up port forwarding for my browser to avoid the delays they could be causing?

I know a little but not a lot, thanks guys.

With a decent router You can do QOS, bandwidth shape and even block or limit peer 2 peer. I can have a torrent running on my server and still game online, My daughter can also watch Youtube while I game which is the reason I set it up in the first place.

Its a netgear router and I saw those options.

I am just wondering what a upnp request every 30 seconds is?

Also, the logs have dos attackes recorded, 'smurf' and some other one, is this common?

This is just what network devices do - chattering away to one another checking who & what are on the network. Nothing to worry about.

Any public Internet IP address will be subjected to random drive-by shootings like this. It's not unusual.
