    Hi caledonman,

why don t you listen to talk or news radio for that? Nova is a rock music station! Yet I notice in another post you say you don t like Newstalk breakfast because it has no music! Newstalk is a talk station for people who want talk!

What is it you want in the morning? I am confused.

    Trsj

Ah don't be confused... I want both, and that's not a lot to ask for.. I like the music of Nova, but not PC, I like the news and discussions on Newstalk, but they kill topics to death.. So, as I said earlier, a few short topical interviews and news on Nova, would be fine instead of some of the irrelevant things PC talks about, including Shamrock Rovers, as if he has attended their matches every week for the past 10 years from abroad... Nothing against Shamrock Rovers before you pick me up on that... Thats all.

But that's not what Nova's about.
If you want short topical interviews and such like then perhaps find a station that does that.
Nova can't be everything to everyone so yes, wanting both is a lot to ask for.

Again, you are missing my point... Nova is doing a good job with the music, and this thread was to discuss Pat C... I would just prefer him to give us less of the rubbish he talks about, and put in some relevant news / chats... I know nova is a rock station, and I know Newstalk is a news station... and yes, it can be done, and no, it's not a lot to ask for...So, what do you think of PC??:)

I think YOU are missing the point.....I for one dont want to hear any chat, news stories, dj banter, crap about someones vagina..or whatnot....i just want to hear ROCK MUSIC.....there's enough radio stations doing "witty banter" or news stories if you want that sort of thing...I DONT.....:o

of course it can be done but you're asking for Nova to change their format just for you. That is a lot to ask for.

The last time I listened to Q102 and 4FM, they were doing what you talking about so it's fairly obvious that Nova are steering clear of that format. Thankfully! :)

I haven't heard PC since the 1st couple of days so can't really comment.

FYI.. between 7am and 7pm, only 61% of Nova's broadcast is music, with 22% to be news and current affairs.. (REF: BAI Application)... i don't think though that 'someones vagina' as you refer to, comes under current affairs!! :D:D

OK, nothing against the guy personally, he seems like he's nice enough.
But Nova has one USP in an already over-crowded market. Its music.

If you think about 98FM, FM104, 2FM, Today FM - they all play pretty much the same music. So, if I was to choose one of those stations in the morning it'd be on the basis of the presenter - which one I liked the most.

Nova made a strange choice with PC. He certainly isn't strong enough to listen to if you don't like Classic Rock. I would very much doubt there are any listeners who are "tolerating" the music just so they can hear him.
The people who are tuning in are tuning in because they want to hear music they can't hear anywhere else. Every word that PC says means that they hear less of that music - that Nova becomes more like the other stations and less unique.
IMO, what Nova - and the breakfast jock - should be doing is, when faced with a choice between speech or music, playing music. If I'm tuning around the band I may stop if I hear a song I like, but I definitely will not stop if I hear Pat.

My wife would have been willing to put up with the music, but she won't put up with Pat, and I don't blame her. She actively gets annoyed when he starts talking and snaps the radio off altogether, and because I'd do anything for a quiet life, I've reverted back to the iPod.

There are certain things that Nova have to provide - the news, the weather, etc etc.

My advice: Dial down the effort to be "zany" about 95%. Cut the Jock Jabber to about 10 mins per hour and fill the extra time with MUSIC. Do this for about six to eight months and maybe people will tolerate a bit more chat, phased in gradually.

Unfortunately, as it stands, Nova goes down as a poorly executed example of what might have been.

I think it's the faux Aussie twang that grinds my gears.

I really don't understand the attraction in PC - ok he was fine in the early 90's when radio here was emerging from the stranglehold of RTE and lame a**ed
local stations and the partnership with Elaine Geraghty was a good one - but it's like he was put in mothballs for two decades and then dusted down for Nova.
Classis Rock is a fantastic medium - just play more variety - but that Smashy/Radio Caroline style went out with the Ark.

I honestly don't remember the 80's jocks being that cheezy - er...ok except Tony Fenton. :D

Did you hear PC doing the Supertramp competition the other morning?
Absolutely toe curling....he played a supertramp song on the acoustic guitar...in the style of john mellencamp!...then berated the two entrants for not having a clue what the song was.
You could hear the panic rising in his voice when he realised it wasn't working out so he tried to make it look like it was the entrants fault for not knowing the song, it was impossible to guess what it was!
    Excruciating radio!
Greg Gaughran is on this morning, much better at his job than PC is.

Anyone know what happened this AM? Pc was due to be on and his jingles were played about 6.10. they seemed to be expecting him.

Don't know what happened him today but he's back on air tomorrow morning according to the other 'jocks'.

Did anyone hear the Coleen Rooney "skit" he played yesterday morning? Shocking stuff. He's also gone down that Today Fm route of having someone else in the studio with him for the show, bouncing off each another with their inane chatter. Some young one. It's awful to listen to but I do for the music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,988 ✭✭✭Bondvillain

The music's fantastic, but I cant listen any more in the mornings in case I hear any of the inane sh*te between songs. I'm so disappointed because I heard fantastic things about Pat C from his pirate days, and was really looking forward to hearing his repartee.

All I've heard is mumbling dross so poor that if Steve Wright had come out with it years ago on his "wacky" "zany" "moronic" BBC1 afternoon show, Gareth O Callaghan wouldnt have bothered stealing it to use on his show the next day. It's that bad.

    Sample banter :

Newsreader :"...and everyone died. That's the news under the tree on Nova"
Pat C: "Hey, I was on Grafton st yesterday, and I saw a busker"
    Confused newsreader :"Ehh..ok. Did you?"
Pat C : "Yeah. He was playing a banjo"
    Confused newsreader : "Really?"
Pat C : Yeah. I think it was Jon Banjovi"
Confused newsreader : "Wow. Was it?"

Embarrassed silence as the realisation dawns on the newsreader that there is no further punchline. Embarrassed coughing from Pat as there are no gales of laughter to cover noise of next track being lined up. Audience feels sorry for all concerned and change station / flick on iPods en masse.
    Fade to black

    This actually happened. Sad.

I'm slightly disappointed with the music policy at the moment.
Remember the test transmissions they did?
It was all rock, proper, classic, hard rock!
It reminded me of planet rock in the Uk.
They've diluted it a bit now.....there's too much Police, Dire Straits, U2 etc.
(If I hear Roxanne one more f'ing time!!!)
Having said that, they will surprise you every now and again with a bit of Floyd, AC/DC or Rush when you're just about to switch off.
Despite it's flaws it is the only radio station I listen to, but if it mirrored planet rock's music policy I'd be a lot happier.
That's just me though, maybe some like the 'broader' playlist but I thought it was being sold as a classic rock station at it's inception?

    P.S. Pat's still $hite in the morning's.

On the "Hollywood Thrash" segment this morning, Pat explained the Sacha Baron Cohen lawsuit with the help of what he obviously thought was the way a gay man spoke. I nearly ate my own head in embarrasment. Music is still ahead of any other station, though if I hear "My Best Friend's Girl" one more time....

I think some of you are just used to listening to a little too much 98Fm where I could script the show 15 mins ahead while driving to work if I wanted to.

The supertramp thing was a joke and they played it several times in promos afterward. How could you have missed that?

He's playing a bit of a character and he doesn't really have anybody to bounce it off. If you need group feedback on the radio to get a joke go back to any of the other stations which have crowds of nitwits providing the canned laughter you clearly need.

Having said that I would like a harder sound like Planet Rock UK.

What they need in that slot is someone who's on their way home. After being up all night, been to a gig & fitting in a couple of hours before they hit the sack -

New Nova Early Jock: It's 7.15. This is Led Zep. Time to get up"

That's it, that's all that's needed, no more. I almost never listen to Nova in the mornings now. Went back to Iano after three weeks of PC

Interesting, that goes against all market research performed for almost every morning show on every radio station in the world.

If it was that simple, more people would be doing it.
