You miss the point. I would consider the Coast Guard to be a government agency, as such wearing the symbols of the government should be somewhat restricted. My Garda comment wasn't about the aircraft, but any civilian contractor who works for the Gardai, such as their computer technicians or some such.
But the difference here is that our coast guard are a volunteer force

When I was in the FCA it was a volunteer force, but I think someone might have had an issue should the guys in the local garage contracted to fix the Ford vans go around wearing green with "Oglaidh na hEireann" badges when working on them.

    NTM

as far as i know the gardai have their own IT lads anyway(actual gardai) i dont see a problem with CHC having the ICG splashed accross their choppers, I would have a concern if actual private contracters working for the govt depts had access to the likes of uniforms/headed paper etc as it could be used for the wrong reasons.
also CHC are contracted by the NSW govt in Aus to provide SAR &EMS.

but it's the Government that's PAYING them to wear the uniform??

Im confused as to what's the issue here?,
the coastguard isn't a branch of the military, and members don't have to powers of arrest as per the US coastguard
ten years ago we had dozens of little volunteer groups around the country, cliff rescue teams, inshore lifeboats, the RNLI,the Bond ltd helicopters contracted at the time

frankly it was all over the shop, now it's been brought together to standardise training and show the public a united image, for PR reasons alone it's worth it

It is a government agency but it deals with the purely civilian aspects of "Coast Guarding" - rescue, polution control. The legal and military aspects of "coast guarding" are provided by the Navy, customs and gardai.

It's a contracted civilian role and I don't see any unusual use of Government symbols on uniforms, aircraft etc.

I think the contracting of CHC helicopters to the US military is somewhat different. There's plentry of reasons why the US military use "civilian contractors" and would prefer not to have "USA" written on the side of the aircraft or the uniforms of staff.

..getting back to discussing the programme:o

It's very impressive.I presume they're using helmet cameras for the action,I don't think I've seen anything so "real" on any other SAR documentary.

Dara doesn't look nearly old enough to be flying for 20 years either. I have a new hero!

Ok, call me a big girls blouse, but there was a tear in the eye when Baby Isaac came back to the base for a visit.

Must've been an itch, yep, that's it, an itch......

Yup Helmet cams and cameras installed around the heli. There were no camera men on the chopper as it would take space that the crew needed so they sometimes filmed on the ground when there was time

great episode tonight, indeed good contrast between the high's of saving a baby and the low's of recovering a body

also doesn't it make you mad that our hospitals don't have helipads??
this landing at GAA pitches is a joke, thank you very much to the management of the HSE

Its a rugby pitch right beside the hospital. I dont think theres a space on the hospital grounds that could safely take the S61n helicopter that they use. Its a beast of a machine. Patients would be transferred in less than 2mins I would guess.

glad to hear at least waterford is sorted, but look at the likes of Beaumont, they have to land at Dublin Airport and then transfer by road, valuable time wasted!

    Really enjoying this show.

Tonight was great, and to see a lift from the ferry which I have seen many times when I used to work at sea.
