Audi S5

As some of you know I'm currently looking around at changing my car.

Anytime I do a search this car always comes up in the search (unless I'm doing a diesel search!)

This car has been for sale for AGES.... I'm wondering do any of you know why this car has been up for SO long??

Is there something up with it? It's a fabulous looking car - maybe a bit too old for what I'm looking for but at the price it's a steal... Oh and it does have a MH reg which adds about €5k to any car (I'm a Meath man!!)

Ha I know we're in a recession but the 520D was the largest seller in August 10, they cost at least €42K.

Ok running costs are going to be much higher on the S5 but it's not that expensive when you have people paying over €40k for a new 520D. The car was probably €100k new!!

Yea but the RS is only new and would cost at least €115k which I'm afraid is well beyond my budget!

Didnt realise they were that much... My missus is mad for the S5 but I am afraid not a petrol one. Pity they dont have the 4.2 tdi.

Personally I think that S5 is a lovely looking area. Generally speaking I'm not a fan of white cars but I think the S5 looks good.

Does anyone know anything about this one? I think it might be up there for a year at this stage....?

If you look at the other S5's for sale on Carzone it's the cheapest and the best equipped and also lowest mileage. Rathdown Motors who are normally competitive have an S5 and are looking for €3k more and it's not as high of spec.

white is an acquire taste I suppose?? Goes well with some car but not others.. Ones I've seen that goes well recently is the Seat Leon..

the only thing i can think of that is keeping people from buying is the running cost especially road tax coupled with depreciation over the next few years..

I was recently looking at a 3.2 A4.. The car was extremely well priced but the road tax and insurance was just way too much for my liking..

arent all S5's petrol?
the diesel version is only an A5 with S-Line kit IIRC, similar to the M-Sport version of BMW.

I would actually prefer to own a regular black diesel audi to a white s5. They just look embarrasingly flash and attention seeking.

Road tax is €2200 per year. Insurance is probably similarly high and try to buy petrol for a 4.2l V8 petrol engine with todays petrol prices are the only reasons id imagine. Cracking car otherwise and a steal at 40k !

Yes the S5 is petrol however its not as special as Audi would have you think. THe RS5 is where its at as that is basically a different car to the stardard A5 whereas the S5 retains same suspension geometry etc as the base car so IMO they are not worth the money.
A 3.0Tdi quattro chipped would be a better buy for most people.

I personally think it looks well but it wouldn't be the car i'd buy in that price bracket.

It sort of sits between a 335i and M3 territory, but for that type of money, i'd want 400bhp +

Considering you can get a 2001 S8 with the exact same power figures (360bhp) for sub 10k now, it seems quite a premium to pay for a newer shape and reg, with the 4.2 engine being more or less the same.

An RS4 or E92 M3 would be a better buy in that price bracket.

It's 2007 so on cc rates. Tax is 1566 euro

I'm not a fan of the older shaped A4's at all to I wouldn't be interested in a RS4.

I don't get your comment re the 2001 S8... You can buy a 01 M3 for €10k.

Tax @ €1,566 isn't that bad when you think of the new Co2 rates.

Surely a 07 S5 should keeps it's value better due to the fact of the €600 per year lower tax (which Irish people go mad for!)

I think that car looks very "drug dealer" or Dolores McSquillions relations type of a car.

Only some cars can pull off white and they are not usually BIG ASS cars like the A5/S5/M5 etc.

A bit too tacky if you ask me. There is a white 2010 M3 floating around Limerick and even that is tacky.

Didn't Grange Motors have an S5 in Matt Grey / Vinyl Wrap?

I don't get your comment re the 2001 S8... You can buy a 01 M3 for €10k.

I'd say there will be a few sub 50k e92 M3's come the new year, but yeah, 40k is a bit low.

The S8 comment is basically that you're paying a premium for older technology in a newer car.

If you're not into RS4's maybe save that bit extra and wait for an e92 M3.

I have driven that S5 twice nearly bought. The man that owns the garage is a nice guy as well so that helps and trade in's seem decent. The inside has a few marks. It does have nav but not bluetooth. Its a nice car with a lovely lazy V8 but as other have said a 335 is a much better buy and nothing in it performance wise in fact when driving the 335 feels quicker. The outside is in lovely condition and the reg is done very well.

I personally think it is a very nice car, and is certainly worth a test drive.
White looks great on the road, it has a lovely V8 and the interiors are excellent. Audi running costs are nowhere near as bad as some cars in this price/performance band either.

You already know you arent going to buy a diesel or an old car. 40 is well inside your budget too (I seem to remember).

If/when you tire of the white (I doubt it) there are some fantastic wraps you can get. Personal favourite for a car like this would be matte graphite grey.

When are you planning to buy?

I'm so confused at the moment. A GTR is the obvious option from the thread I had a while ago but I'd imagine the running costs on it are unreal. I've looked into how much it would cost to run and it's unbelievable. Being honest it's probably out of my range based on how much it would cost to run. The euro is getting stronger all the time though so buying one in from the UK is becoming interesting again.

Then I was thinking maybe I should just hold on to what I've got at the moment and see how things lie in the new year.

Then when I was thinking maybe I could buy something around the €40k mark and hold on to it for a 1 - 1 1/2 years then go for the GTR. That S5 comes up in every search I do. I don't want to spend €40k and end up taking an awful hit on the depreciation on it in the space of a year.

So I guess I'll buy a 335D!!! :rolleyes:

335d coupe with proper spec is a stunning car. Would certainly swap my A5 for one

Try finding one with a decent spec on it in Ireland at the moment though....

It really does my head in why someone would buy a 335 SE!

The issue with the S5 coupe is that as you noted, the lazy V8. It had the misfortune to be launched mere weeks before Audi came to their senses and went back to Forced Induction for their S cars.

Whats schizophrenic about the S5 as a model is the S5 Cabriolet, which was launched much later, comes with the proper 3.0 Supercharged V6 engine out of the S4 and can be spec'ed with the Torque Vectoring Sports Diff (also out of the S4). And given its an FI car, can be tuned to much much higher performance than the fat old V8.

So in summary:
S5 Coupe - nice looking, good chassis but wrong engine
S5 Cab - A back to roots S car engine lumbered with a 200kg Cab body.

Isnt your A5 a 1.8t FWD? Not really the same as swapping from S5 even with its stupid V8.
