Riots?

    Hey,

I've just heard last night that the government are planing to add an additional few percent on the top of levys, pay cuts, other tax increases and inevitable water charges. I've also heard that they are preparing kind of a small "army" or rather "emergency service" to be up&running before the new budget is announced, ready to prevent or fight any protests/riots etc. I simply think that another "penalties" are a bit too much for the working people to handle, while junkies and scumbags enjoy a free dope, houses, heating, doctor, etc..
Is there gonna be an "assembly point" if I wanna meet others who think the same? Do you think many would show up? Add yourself to the thread if you think so.

    Doc.

Unfortunately I can't provide you with a link to what I've heard. Also the fact that there is not link doesn't mean it's not happening, although it's not the most valid part of my post.

can you not at least elaborate on your source and flesh out your claim a bit. What are you suggesting? existing trained Gardai crowd control / Army participation / a new quasi paramilitary force?

Iceland, as usual are ahead of us

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/oct/01/iceland-politicians-flee-protesters
Protesters took to the streets of Reykjavik today, forcing MPs to run away from the people they represent as renewed anger about the impact of the financial crisis erupted in Iceland.

The violent protest came amid growing fury at austerity measures being imposed across Europe. Disruption in more than a dozen countries this week included a national strike in Spain and a cement truck driven into the Irish parliament's gates.

Witnesses said up to 2,000 people caused chaos at the state opening of the Icelandic parliament, with politicians forced to race to the back door of the building because of the large number of protesters at the front. Eggs were said to have hit the prime minister, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, other MPs and the wife of the Icelandic president, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.

This thread reminds me of all those "bank run" speculation threads that were all the rage a week ago.

it has always been the case that students were first on to the streets, i.m.o. that has been the reason that university grants had not been touched, december will prove me right.

Ok, that's the path: Civil Service>friend>friend>me

I don't claim anything, I'm just wondering if the Irish are gonna be taking another slap in the face and become another nation turned into "slaves of 21st century". By the looks of this rumour I've heard the gov think that it might be a bit too much for the taxpayer to take (and it is for me anyway). I'd like to see if the others think similar, or will you be happy to pay more and more again and again?

I don't know if your being serious or not, but I don't see what good protesting is going to do and I don't think your going to get the turn out your expecting either.
My reason for thinking this is that even after the budget cuts come in December it wont effect people enough to warrant an upheaval.
Cuts are going to have to come from somewhere and if they don't do it then there are people waiting at the door that will do it for them. My only aspirations are that if we take cuts that the politicians take cuts too and show a bit of solidarity (I'm not going to put much of a bet on that one though ).

It is blatantly obvious (and also unavoidable) that come the next budget the fiscal thumbscrews will have to be tightened sharply.
It is also pretty likely that the hitherto pretty passive Irish populace might just boil over at that point.
Preparing for that likelyhood is the only logical consequence ...and you can be sure that those in power are logical when it comes to protecting their own hides.

I do not suggest anything, but riots usually show that the people are unhappy. I hope that you realise that if you won't protest, the others (the gov in this case) will happily take whatever you have...

As for the cuts for the gov members, yeah I agree, bring them down to the minimum wage and then we'll be talking from an equal perspective.

Its early days yet, just because they haven't happened yet doesn't mean they are not going to. Personally I don't trust a word out of this governments mouth and that includes their "bank guarantee" (unless of course you are bondholder then they will bend over backward to look after you)

People think things are bad.... they haven't seen anything yet.

I think the current goverment only has 4/5 months left, I don't think the budget will get passed, indo TD;s will defect.

FG/Labour will govern and will have to continue the exact same policies as current goverment.. Cuts and increases...

If the IMF were to come in... the 1st thing they would do is raise Corporation tax... and that would spell the end of the Irish Economy in real terms....

In the complete and utter absence of any proof whatsoever of the original claim, this thread can only really go from the silly to the ridiculous.
