Tactical Baguette. Used in forcing entry and such. Very effective :)

In all seriousness i have no clue. Im guessing its just the way the picture is taken. Could be a rifle with a cover on it.

You are absolutely spot on, I was so enthralled with the pic I failed to recognise that the most obvious D upgrade was missing, the FCR/RFI dome. Doh!

There not being much need for the radar to deal with Taliban tanks in Afghanistan, a lot of D models have had their radars temporarily removed. The resulting lighter empty weight allows them to carry more ordnance or fuel in the thin air in the mountains. As a result, often telling between an A and a D in photos can be extremely difficult.

Hate to get all pedantic about this but isn't that just a 'normal' Apache as opposed to a Longbow, the Longbow having a large dome above the main rotor assembly.........sorry:o

It is an AH-64D though, you can tell by the large cheek fairings, the AH-64As have smaller ones. Most countries order a mix of AH-64Ds, some fitted with the radar and others without to cut costs. Even the US army has done this. The ones with the radars are called Longbows though. The radars can be added later fairly quickly if needed.

Usually they fly in groups of 2 of 4 with half equipped with the radar and they can datalink target info and guide the missiles for the other non Longbow equipped Ds, if needed.
