things like the blue mosque, Grand Bazaar, cruise on the bosporus, topkapi palace, hop over to the asian side and back on the ferry (cost about 1 euro), take in the atmosphere at a local soccer game, smoking hookah seems to be quite popular in istanbul, good views from the galata tower

the taksim square district is probably the main city centre of istanbul, american fast food chains abound here as well as streets with western stores

expect to be wakened early if your hotel is located near any of the multitude of mosques in istanbul
