Initial impressions are positive so far. I like the feel of the device and it's comfortable to use. Not sure about the buttons on the left hand side, but we'll see how things go. They might become irrelevant once the case arrives.

On the negative side, not sure how good it is for PDFs, however this could be down to Calibre more so than the Kindle.

Firstly, what the original PDF says and then the MOBI conversion.

Should I try converting them to another format?

Just on Calibre, it a great tool for converting everything - except PDF's.
With PDF's, it seems to still not getting it right retaining formats.
I live in hope they get it right eventually.

    @Black Oil

This a problem with PDFs - they're usually set up as an A4 document which is 14" diagonal from corner to corner where as the Kindle is 6" from corner to corner. Some PDFs can be reflowed - text rearranged to fit the screen but a lot can't usually because they are scanned from paper documents or not created with ebook readers in mind.

There are programs such as PaperCrop and Briss which can crop sections of the PDF file to fit into 6" screen blocks but the results are variable.

Just got my 3G + Wifi Kindle at the weekend. It was purchased in the States and came with firmware 3.01. I updated it to 3.02 - no problems - just took a few minutes to complete.

3G works very well - 3G internet browsing is good for the most part. Gmail works fine. Screen quality is amazing. Very happy with my purchase.

Accidently purchased a book on Amazon when I meant to download a sample. Emailed Customer Services and they removed it from my Kindle remotely within 30 minutes and refunded me the charge. Excellent service.

    :)

Yes, as I posted in another thread, this one: http://www.mightybright.com/eReader_Lights/122/ProductDetail.html

To re-quote from this thread: http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056045442
If a light is needed for the Kindle (I own one myself) I can utterly recommend "Mighty Bright" - again, I own one (see HERE).
They can be found on Ebay and all over the internet. The slightly longer reach of the extending arm makes a big difference (bends a lot more to suit). Its strong and sturdy than more similar lights too.

...And its cheap enough too if you shop around,

I bought a Kindle 3 bout 2 weeks ago. I'm currently traveling through the states and it is amazing! I've read it for 8 hours straight at times with little strain on the eyes (though that much reading can leave your mind a bit of a mess!). Would definitely recommend this to people who read alot.

This morning, I was reading a newspaper on my kindle. I went to turn a page as you would do with a physical book. It took me a split second to realise all I needed to do was press a button. :o

I installed the jailbreak on my K3 this morning and can now ssh into it via WiFi :)

    k3jailbreak.jpg

The images needed are available at this Kindle Developer's Corner thread on the mobileread forum.

The thread is very long, so to bring some info together the procedure I used was:

Install correct Jailbreak image from kindle-jailbreak-0.3.N.zip
Install correct usbnetwork image from kindle-usbnetwork-0.23.N.zip
Mount the Kindle via USB and observe new root directory usbnet
Edit usbnet/etc/config to set K3_WIFI="true" & change USB IPs if you need to.
    Unmount the Kindle drive
Press carriage return on the Kindle and type the following
    ;debugOn
Press carriage return twice and type
    ~usbNetwork
    followed by carriage return
Plug the Kindle into your computer via USB again.
Configure IP over USB on your computer; 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0.
telnet 192.168.2.2 to your Kindle, no password is required
SSHing to Kindle requires a password or ssh passphrase.
Copy your ssh2 public key to usbnet/etc/authorized_keys
Edit usbnet/etc/config to set K3_WIFI_SSHD_ONLY="true" so that IP/Eth over USB isn't automatically enabled when the K3 is plugged in via USB. The K3 will default to automounting.

Yes what are the benefits of jailbreaking it? I didn't even know it could be jailbreaked as it's a term I associated with iphones.

SSH is a program/protocol for logging into computers. The Kindle runs Linux. Doing it over WiFi just means you don't have to plug it into your computer before sshing into it, which is also possible.

"Jailbreaking" it lets you install additional fonts and screensavers on it.

The usbNetworking one isn't much use by itself other than providing a frisson of UNIX/Linux geek excitement at seeing a root prompt. :D

Would any of you knowledgeable people in this thread have an opinion on the DX version of the Kindle? I understand it may be better as regards reading PDF's but would appreciate info from users.

The DX has a much bigger screen so it would definitely be better for reading PDFs.

But the cost of it is still high and it doesn't have WiFi.

The new Kindle 3.0 software hasn't been introduced on the DX yet either.

There are rumours that Amazon will be releasing a tablet PC or replacement for the DX.

All in all, it is looking like a platform that will be replaced soon.

Can the kindle handle RSS feeds?

I would love a hand held/hardware version of Google reader.

Several days ago I got a refund of the "Import Duty" VAT on the UK power adapter that I ordered with my Kindle (waste of money btw).

The Irish customs mustn't have bothered collecting it. Fair play to Amazon for refunding it.

Took a quick run through and wanted to say that the K3 does read PDFs natively, no need to convert to Mobi format for reading on the Kindle.

BUT, since the screen is small, so will be the words -- so use Aa-key (Text key) to rotate the screen to Landscape and it'll be easier to read.

If that's not satisfactory, THEN convert to the Kindle's mobi format but for PDF-to-Mobi, use the free Mobipocket Creator instead. It does a better job on this than Calibre. Calibre does a superb job on every other file conversion it does, is ultra flexible, and also offers file management and metadata changes.

TO convert, send the PDF to [you]@free.kindle.com and put 'Convert' into the Subject field. Otherwise it just sends the original PDF to your Kindle.

Web browsing - If you can do web browsing in Ireland with 3G (which most can), then you'll be able to use the 3G in many other countries without any fees. Sometimes the web browser via 3G is not available to you in other countries due to whatever agreements are going on in those countries, but in my reading I see that most are able to use their 3G web browser in many other countries if they can use it at home (in their countries).

Empathy to JohnK, as I was reading through. You went through a lot!

Amazon announces Kindle Singles, the short-form book format
For the light readers out there
Amazon has created a new format for its e-reader, which it is calling Kindle Singles.

While the name suggests that it is reading material for all the singletons out there, the format is more for bits of literature which aren't full-blown novels, neither magazine articles.
Kindle Singles will be around 30-90 pages in length (10,000-30,000 words) and is for those texts which have added depth.
"Kindle Singles will have their own section in the Kindle Store and be priced much less than a typical book," said Amazon in a statement.
"Today's announcement is a call to serious writers, thinkers, scientists, business leaders, historians, politicians and publishers to join Amazon in making such works available to readers around the world."

    Kindle surprise

Amazon also explained that: "Kindle Singles will be 'Buy Once, Read Everywhere'," noting that "customers will be able to read them on Kindle, Kindle 3G, Kindle DX, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, Mac, PC, BlackBerry, and Android-based devices."
This is part of a whole host of new features for its Kindle Store, including the ability to write your own novel and get it published on the store.

Hope this goes well. It might start-up another direction, small new writing industry area too!

This is my new most favourite item - so I was more than a bit gutted when I noticed the screen was cracked and it wouldn't work last Monday night. I hadn't used it since Friday and can't say how it got damaged. It's in a Kindle case, was on the locker by my bed. Hand on heart, though, I can't discount the possibility of knocking it on the floor/stepping on it - but I don't think so.

My OH, seeing how upset I was, immediately offered to buy me a new one (nothing to do with the peace and quiet he's enjoyed since I got it, I'm sure :P) but I decided to make contact with Amazon and see what repairs would cost.

Anyway, I phoned Amazon on Tuesday lunch and was told, without any quibble, that it was covered by warranty and a new Kindle arrived at my door by 9 on Thursday!

Provided I return the original, there's no charge and they'll even refund my shipping costs.

I did some googleing but didn't come across any recent reports of screen problems, so I don't think there's a reported design flaw.

I'm considering myself very fortunate indeed. :D
