The website says Kindles to Ireland ordered today are expected to ship on or before Sept 27th. But there's no delay on orders for the US ones.

The "Access Wikipedia via Whispernet" line seems to have made a re-entry on the product information for your country page. :(

It also says blogs can be downloaded and they can't.

I just checked and browsing through 3G is still working.

Do I take this to mean that Kindles in Ireland won't be able to browse websites without restriction as per what happened in Germany? This is very annoying as this was one of the selling points for me. I'd hoped to be able to check my gmail on it occasionally at a minimum.. Please let me know if they do cut off the web access in Ireland.

    Thanks.

No. Some BLOG sites are not accessible for some reason.
I have a Kindle 3 and I can perfectly access the web in the standard (a bit slower) way using the K3.
You are of course going to come across site that won't work well or at all for tech reasons but thats only to be expected.

Just to be clear. Do the websites you have looked at all work over 3G as well as WIFI ? It is the 3G access I was hoping to get for free.

    Thanks.

As long as your Kindle is able to receive a wireless signal, be it in one form or another, the coding structure of a website and its contents are still the same in the digital method of sending.
No matter what form of wireless "transport" you use, the data being sent to your device is still the same.
...It all boils down the capabilities of the displaying device itself and in the case of the Kindle, I have yet to find it lacking over all.

In other words, using 3G should not leave you lacking.

Well I've kept you all up to date on the happenings with my kindle so I may as well give the last little nugget of oddness :D

After they figured out they had the wrong serial number for my device, they activated that number in their system and a few hours later it finally began to work! So woohoo for that. Now you might remember I had mentioned UPS rang a few days ago saying they had a package trying to clear customs for me, but nothing was ever delivered so I had thought they'd made a mistake and were talking about the package they'd already delivered. It seems not as they've just been back on to say the package is still in the depot in Cork waiting for clearance and they cant get in contact with anyone in Amazon so they cant process it through customs as there is no invoice or value on the box but oddly that package first showed up that it should be going to Germany. Now if I was a betting man, I'd say the serial number on that one is what was originally linked to my account.

So now the only question is, why in the hell did they send me two kindles? I've checked my creditcard and they've only charged for one so its all a bit on the bizarre side of things. I'm not going to get that second Kindle though, UPS are going to send it back but so the next fun thing will no doubt happen when Amazon get a Kindle back with my account number on the box.

    Wonder if I'll get a refund :D

Is it possible to get a uk/ireland plug for the usb cable? Obviously I got the usb cable with the US plug at the end. Had a quick look on eBay but there was nothing.

Yes, I bought one a few weeks ago in a Power City store for just under 7 Euro.

Did you change your Kindle's "Home Country" in Manage Your Kindle to a US address?

What serial number does yours have B00A or BOO6?

My Manage Your Kindle page is currently saying my country is "Unknown". One of the options it's giving me is an old UK address. Tempted to try changing it to see if it will let me download from the UK site.

    Edit -

I tried it out. I set my billing to my Irish credit card with Irish billing address and set the Kindle's location to a UK address I sent a gift to.

    kindleukaccount.jpg

Then this appeared at the top of the screen.

    kindleshopinukstore.jpg

I clicked cancel at the next stage because it looks like a one-way transfer to the amazon.co.uk site.

    kindleaccounttransfer.jpg

After canceling I set the Kindle location back to Ireland and it returned to accepting me as a amazon.com customer without the link at the top of the page giving the option to move the Kindle over to amazon.co.uk.

Yes changed it on manage my kindle

Let us know how you get on.

    They sent you a US AT&T K3. My replacement K3 is also a B006.

Have you tried Alt-EQQ to see what network provider's are available.

I've noticed my B006 jumping around between GRPS, EDGE and 3G a bit more than my B00A Kindle did.

I ordered a 3G/wi-fi version this afternoon. This is my first e-reader. Re it coming through UPS/DHL, is this because it's coming from the US or because of the nature of the device? Stuff from the UK site is just left in our porch.

As for Calibre, what are the benefits of this, more flexibility in organising your library?

hello, i ordered one of these from england using an english addy. my brother will bring it home to me in november. just been reading this thread and have to admit im massively
confused by the 3g and accounts and where you can buy stuff from. so basically im
asking if im at a disadvantage because i bought it in england? i dont want to be told i cant use the internet on it. and i want to be able to buy books from england. i can still
use my brothers uk addy, but will they accept an irish addy on the credit card?

they accepted it for the kindle order.

How did you get around the amazon.co.uk website redirecting you to the amazon.com store? Did you access the website from a UK IP address or order it with your UK brother's amazon.co.uk account?

For web access it shouldn't make any difference if your Kindle's home country is set to Ireland or UK.

Do you see a Manage Your Kindle page on your amazon.co.uk account and does it give you the option of changing the home country to Ireland?

I just bought a Kindle book on the amazon.com site and the acknowledgement email had the UK address as the billing address.
This happened when I partially switched my Kindle over to the .co.uk website; it set the UK address as the default for 1-click billing, which is required when purchasing kindle books.

Three separate addresses seem to be in the mix

    1. The address used to set the home country of the Kindle
    2. The 1-click address corresponds to the "Billing address" for Kindle book orders
    3. The credit card's billing address - apparently this is irrelevant

As far as I can see 1 & 2 must both be a UK address to purchase from amazon.co.uk.

no i used my own account. didnt use ip blocking or anything like that.
it was all very easy just ordered it like normal, but shipped it to a uk addy

    okay, thats grand so.

no didnt see that, but i wasnt looking for it either.

Ordered mine on 1st September, arrived Monday 20th.
Very impressed with it, it really is a great gadget.

Got a usb power adapter on ebay here: http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270629682689&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
    Ordered yesterday, arrived today :P

Been looking into some covers, but the Amazon one are outrageously overpriced.

    Considering one of those:
    http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/cat/Kindle-Cases.htm?referer=G-C-Cases-Kindle&gclid=CKKRsIWsmKQCFUg-4wodzHEYDg

Web browsing on 3G works well too, once you are out of WiFi reach it automatically switches to 3G.

I am very happy indeed with it - the only let down are the expensive book prices on amazon.com.

I assume it is, it says
"These accessories are for the new Amazon Kindle, released internationally in 2010. "

But I'm sitting tight at the moment waiting for more choices :). Ideally I am looking for a clear skin ...

Mine has shipped and will hopefully reach me tomorrow. Departure scan says 4:46am Louisville. I think it will get here before my case which is coming from the UK site.

Hi I ordered a Kindle 3 3G as a gift and the person I'm giving it to is going on holidays outside the country soon. I want to clarify if there would be any additional charges for using the 3G when abroad, like would web browsing still be free and would there be an additional charge for downloading Kindle books?

Just back from the Canaries - I browsed a few sites and downloaded 2 books using 3G there - only paid for the books. It wasn't as fast as wifi, but worked a charm all the same.

Urgh, no sign of it even being 'out for delivery' yet.

Re Calibre, the Kindle and PDFs, is it best to the leave the files as PDFs or should I convert them to EPUBs and them send them to the Kindle?

I don't think EPUBs are compatible with the Kindle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭morgana

Convert them to MOBI. You can transfer them to the Kindle straight from Calibre.

@ The Black Oil: I had that too, the tracking seems to be slow to change status at the final stages. I rang them and they confirmed delivery at that day even though status showed just incoming scan at Cork.

    Thank you :)

It arrived so I'm charging it up and will see how it goes. I was quite surprised at how light the box it came in was.
