People at Hist were some of the friendliest I thought and actually helpful - got assaulted by the rowing club members about 6 times and was pretty offputting!

Russian society sounded good - vodka parties... trips to Russia , and the guy looked like he was in the Mafia so thats pretty cool... :D

    See you there! :)

Kind of curious about the whole RPG thing so I'll be interested to see what it's like, I assume there's lots of different stuff going on tomorrow?

Which societies have 4-year membership? I need to figure out what to renew.

Ha ha, nobody calls me Grimes. That's brilliant.

Anyway, yes, there was. It's basically at the bottom of the stairs of the Chapel, facing it. Just down from the massive Great Outdoors stand.

Cheers, will track it down on wednesday:)

Yep! And if you're not sure what's going on, grab someone and ask.

    The Hist and The Phil.

I was initially told by The Phil that The Hist was only a 1 year membership. Thinking that it was just a clever ruse I investigated further and was told by Hist members that it actually was only for 1 year. The Phil is for 4 though

Also was there a stand anywhere for pokersoc or a football one?

I was there today for most of the day, great fun :) I'm looking forward to whatever else is going on later in the week/year in general.

Glad you enjoyed it! We have free pizza in our room in Goldsmith Hall Thursday and Friday evenings. There's also a boardgames evening next Tuesday and an introduction to RPGs next Thursday.

How does one go about joining a society outside of freshers' week? I'm away all this week and there are a couple of societies I'd like to join.

Find someone on their committee, and ask to join.

Most socs, when they run events for members only, will happily sign people up at the door.

Having no money during freshers week sucks :(

Anyone else finding it hard to remember when events are on? Outside a few fliers, none of them seem to have anything on facebook, their websites or be using e-mail lists.

Just informing all of you who have purchased Ents Wristbands that due to unprecedented demand, the Club Philth Midnight Rave on Thursday night HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE ACADEMY ON MIDDLE ABBEY STREET. Doors are at 12am.

    Thank fúck.

Its worth joining the EngSoc this year for the membership card concessions alone. It has more than the Phil or the Hist and as many as the SU Ents card, very surprising!
That, and members get fresher's packs full of quality stuff- Lucozade, Hunky Dorys, a cool portable mobile phone charger, caramel rice krispy squares, sensodyne, the list goes on.
That coupled with nights out during the year, the Engineering Ball, guest speakers, foreign & domestic trip makes membership money well spent.
Look for the big yellow sign with the Lego!!!

Do we get to play with Lego if we join?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭zam

Kind of odd that Club Philth is on in the Academy.. wont Octopussy be on?

Can I just pay in at the door for Club Philth? Or can I buy a ticket or it tomorrow even?

So far joining Players has been paying dividends, I've been at an Improv workshop, just back from Never Mind the Panel, and full of much free "refreshments" and sandwiches. Top it off with a very friendly welcoming bunch and I'd say Players is my pick for the best society :)

    It breaks down like this:

Join SFSOC for 360/PS3/Wii/older console games and access to DVDs.
Join Gamers for CCGs, RPGs, board games, stuff that doesn't require electricity.
Join Netsoc for PC games and that other thing they do.

There's a lot of overlap between the various member bases, funnily enough.

nononononononononoNO. DUCSS is for PC games, netsoc is for doing other fun things with computers (and by having fun, I mean not using windows :pac:).

When does Cardsoc run its games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,889 ✭✭✭evercloserunion

Do a lot of non-CS students join DUCSS? Is there much point if you have an interest in computers but aren't actually studying them?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,051 ✭✭✭Tragedy

I joined DUCSS and netsoc. Someone told me netsoc was for pc gaming >.>

    I'm 1st year BESS.

As you might expect, the society is mostly CS, but there are a fair few non-CS members. I'm involved in it and I'm TP (although I used to be CS).

As for there not being "much point", well, to put it one way, CS students don't get a huge amount out of DUCSS that would help with their course directly (well, we do have a library which includes a few of the course books). It's really more of a society where you can meet like-minded people and hang out and go to events with them, where "like-minded" means you probably have some interest in technology, gadgets, the internet, music, games or whatever (events have included things like nights out, ice skating, movie nights, as well as computery stuff like programming tutorials in various interesting languages). None of the non-CS students in the society I know feel left out because they're not doing the course.
