Afraid I'll Have To Drop Out

Hey guys, third year IT student in LIT here. I had to repeat two exams a week ago as I failed them in the summer and got the results today, I'm afraid I failed them again :(

I had a lot of family problems this year, which made studying very difficult at times, but still managed to pass three out of my five subjects. My attendance was good (around 80%) and all my projects and practicals were submitted. I guess what I'm trying to say is I wasn't lazy by any means and made a good effort.

Trouble is, I've been relying on the grant to keep me going since I started College, as my financial situation is difficult. I'm assuming that I won't get the grant again to repeat the year, so that means I'll have to drop out.

I'll be contacting my course leader in the next day or so to see what my options are, although I've a feeling my prospects don't look good.

I just wanted to see if anybody here has been in a similar situation and may have any advice? Has anyone ever heard of a College allowing a student to repeat exams a second time, or carry on the exams and do them again at Christmas, next summer, etc?

In Trinity, at least, you can make an appeal on the grounds of horrible circumstances (ad misericordiam - appeal to pity). They don't change the results but can change the effects of them (eg instead of getting kicked out or having to repeat you might be allowed into next year). Deadlines for these things tend to be strict, and I don't know if LIT allows such appeals. Go talk to your course leader. Be honest about the difficulties you were working with.

Oh!!! Here's the academic regulations for LIT: http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:Z4Jw8XnJCQcJ:www.lit.ie/aboutlit/quality-assurance/ACRP_AC%2520Approved_080509.pdf+examination+grade+appeal&hl=en&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEEShv8Q6yUhd-zPZEJt7RzJr804NHlYcHysE4jpIDGh6QlNc4F5qYsbNSSJPKwiiBqk8VlZw9YDRbaCerNnhnpoRpjdmWLktsRQN_7Oqk8NJo9EodnfYCL8lu1ypY_XyiVtrzUKKW&sig=AHIEtbS9lJYbMXCBHAtd8m_t1Kvsj3K6Ew

Look at sections 4.9.3 and 4.10.3 (pages 58 and 59) - normally the deadline is within five days of the examination (NOT the results). If you did the exams a week ago, you MIGHT be able to get the appeal in tomorrow (five working days after the last exam).

Talk to your course leader FIRST THING IN THE MORNING and DON'T LEAVE CAMPUS TILL YOU HAVE AN APPEAL IN.

(Obviously, I'm not affiliated with LIT and this is solicited random Internet advice. Which is what you asked for.)

If you have a chat to the college and explain your circumstances they might have an student assistance fund that might help you out? i'm not sure what the story with the IT's is but the Uni's have funds like this so it might be worth checking out?

I contacted the head of the IT department today and have a meeting arranged. Apparently, I can simply pay a fee and sit the two exams again, rather than have to repeat the whole year :D Prob would mean I would enter 4th year next September. What harm, it's a small price compared to having to drop out :p

Thanks for the help guys, it means a lot. Especially you Ophiuchus, you didn't have to spend your time trawling through a list of rules and regulations for someone you didn't know :p

No problem. I'm one of the few people who actually finds university regulations interesting. :p The hard part was actually turning up that document in the first place! You're welcome, and I'm glad you don't have to drop out. Essentially you're repeating the year "off-books".

Psst! Situations like this are what the "Thanks" button is for. :)
