But when they have all the new customers they want and need to make a profit then they will enforce the caps that they have.

To be fair to Imagine that's more than likely just dodgy home networking.

Although in saying that if you can't change your home networking settings in the first place with their locked down CPE then who's really to blame?

    Hrmmmmnnnn....

I run seveal computers and consoles on my network through a Linksys WRT54G hooked up to their CPE over ethernet. Everything gets its IP address from the CPE and my router just provides the wireless.

I can't remember the right name for it, gateway mode I think. Pretty easy to setup.

That's exactly what a NAT router does. It should indeed just work and simply get slower as you add devices.

    It's the default.

Reducing available bandwidth yes. Cutting it off completely? No...

The person should try updating the firmware if they hadn't. Most of those home routers are released with major bugs with the intention of patching after release via firmware updates.

However some of the manufacturers also drop support almost immediately and the bugs never get patched.

Belkin I'm looking at you

Something wrong with their network. Does it do that if you open multiple sessions on the PC (that are simultaneous)?

Yes, but this is a WRT54G. They actually work.

Irish Broadband have always had issues with the PS3. The Wimax network uses practically the same backend with different wireless tech.

Imagine block ports on their network. Call their support, they will unblock the port for this for you on your Imagine equipment.

Piracy posts removed. dvdfan, don't have this discussion anywhere on Boards.

Yeah i seen a thread on it before, there is illegal streams quoted on boards since obviously the mods cant catch them all but from what i read they cant be held responsible, just if you read (d) its easy to interpret it as "If someone posts a link to a stream" then theyre publishing information that assists in intercepting the service. But anyway thats slightly de-railing the thread.

To at least give something back to the thread after the derail i got Winimax in a couple of months ago because there was no dsl available at the time and after a shaky 1st month its pretty damn good. Ive used mobile broadband and ive used UPC and although its not as good as UPC i need internet for work, i have regular skype meetings, constantly download files etc and ive no problem downloading (legal) torrents or anything like that although i dont do it that often so maybe its something they penalise if youve been doing an excessive amount.

So its pretty damn solid considering its not dsl, i would still choose UPC i had the choice of both (i believe UPC may be availalble here soon) but its definetely very solid with very little downtime, doesn't slow down at different times of the day or anything like that.

My Ping is pretty crap and my upload speed is slow but from what i read the ping would affect skype, i often use it continually for 1-2 hours without losing connection and having perfect sound which is surprising because my speedtest results are

    7.14 up
    0.24 down
    87ms ping

And thats pretty much standard throughout the day although its not always the full 7mb up, im on the 7mb connection btw.

I'm completely confused by this whole product. The parents have switched their home package to this and I'm trying to find out about it.

It's not unlimited, its got a 30G limit per month. This is hidden in their FUP.

I've read the AUP and don't see any mention of 30gb. Is there another policy I need to read, if so do you have a link?

    Fixed Wimax is good.

ANY Mobile/Nomadic product with indoor aerials on 3.5GHz will be poor

I guess I'm confused by the terms fixed and mobile. What is fixed Wimax? Is the 7mb package on this page fixed?

If it is fixed, is it any good a service in your opinion and especially for a heavy downloaded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭dvdfan

Im quite impressed with it, im a bit outside town so they put up an antenna on the building, its only a small one, some of friends in town just have that modem you linked to on their webpage presumable because their closer to the tower.

The 1st month was a bit choppy but that was to be expected as they just launched it, last 3-4 months its being extremely solid, consistently getting 5+mb, very rare downtime or slowing down at peak times.

I also use skype daily and its perfect for that, good download speeds, they dont block torrents, its far superior to any mobile type internet Ive used but its not as good as UPC which i found superb.

Imagine don't do fixed wimax at all, they only do mobile. They do a fixed install for people with weaker signals but with other users being mobile it all becomes mobile. Having other customers with weaker signals lags eveyone on the network.
Many other providers do fixed install only, this guarantees everyone on the network has the best possible signal meaning the network copes better and is controllable, it means a home visit and a receiver fitted to the external of Your house and cabled in
Imagine took the cheap customer self install and mobile dongle route meaning they can never control the lag on their network. The signal with a dongle inside Your house is many times worse than a fixed receiver fitted to Your roof/wall

Breeze may be a kind of Fixed WiMax, certainly BreezeMax gear is. But Imagine don't seem to want to sell it now and even seem to be replacing it with their Mobile/Nomadic gear.

The Fixed kind of network costs about €250 more per customer install, but is an EIGHT times better network for same capacity.

Is Imagine in breach of licence for using FWALA (Fixed Wireless Access) licences for spectrum / capacity wasting Mobile/Nomadic gear just for a short term once off network investment that permenently leaves an inferior network in place?

This is what i have, its a fixed antenna on the external wall and its cabled into my house. This might explain why mine is much better, i know a couple of mates that just have the modem and must ask them next time i see them how its going for them

Strange one that some one here maybe able to explain,

I have Breeze Max , any way they were changing the frequency's and knocked every one off in the Area.

So an engineer is out with me now and he tells me that both Breeze Max and WiMax are to run on the same frequency, they have just put the WiMax station on Top of the Whitewater shopping station.

Will having both the Breeze max and Wimax on the same frequency effect how good Breeze max was before

look Irish broadband was a complete con these are the same people who are behind wimax and I'm not gonna fall for it, I ordered 7 meg I'm being billed for 7 meg and if they cant do better than the.7 i'm getting at the moment they can have their poxy box back and I wont charge them for wasting the last 3 months of my life I signed up in May but received the pathetic service about a month ago. if I hit the airwaves about this like the joe duffy show I'd appreciate some support, every time I hear that add I feel like smashing the telly

I think you have to have the fixed antenna to have any hope of decent service.

Have the fixed one and it is good although I still get the occasional ping spikes, downloads speeds are good, upload is a joke as is usual for Irish ISP's.

I usually get at least the 7Mbps, sometimes higher still. It does drop below it occasionally.

    what a f****n joke,

i ordered wimax after getting fed up of perlico disconnection every 20-30mins on xbox live. I live roughly 1 mile as the crow flies from a mast, on a hill and was assured that i would get a great signal.

Got the wimax hub, best i can do is 1 green light of 4, cant activate it, imagine tell me "if i cant get a signal i cant get a signal" and tell me ill need to get an outside mast installed and is this ok, they dont inform me that it costs €100 until i enquire at which point i loose the head and tell them that their heap of ****e box will be here to collect whenever they want it. They then said they'll call me before the end of the day, 8pm. Anyone else have equally ****ty experiences of them.
If they do the mast for free i might give them a go, otherwise i'll have to persevere with perlico a bit longer.

I forgot the golden rule, if its Irish its gonna be corrupt , incompetent or both . never again
