Certs I need to have a chance of getting employed as a web designer

    What are the certs you would recommend to have in order to get a job as a Web Designer with a company? I have the CITXX, ECDL and FETAC Level 6 certs for Networks & PC Maintenance. This time next year, I will have CNSXX and MCSE. And then I was planning on doing either a Computing or Computer Science course. What would you recommend me to get? I know experience is obviously important, too but its important I get my foot in the door first.

    In my honest opinion certs for web design aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Get yourself a portfolio of sites that you have designed and thats worth way more than any cert your ever going to get. Even if you dont have work you could maybe just design some sites on topics that interest you or even redesign the front page of some corporate site just for your portfolio. Any potential employer will look at this portfolio first.

    A relevant qualification is never going to harm your chances of getting a job.

    A good portfolio of sites is always great to have and is probably far better to have on your CV than a qualification from one of the short webmaster/web design courses in private colleges in town. But a good portfolio combined with a relevant 3rd level qualification is going to be far better for your career in the long-term.

    It's interesting you say you want to get a job as a web designer yet you don't mention one design course in your list of options, are you sure you don't mean web developer?

    I don't have a choice unfortunately, my only options are Computing or Computer Science. I'm doing a FETAC web design course which leads to either one of those after second year.

    Portfolio, with a LOT of self learning. There are no courses in Ireland that will give you a solid base for employment. The way things have moved here's a tip: specialise. Don't be a developer & design, you'll be mediocre at both. Pick a specialist area - Front end design, UI design, Front End coding, DOM Scripting or development.
