    August 11th Run:
    Distance: 7.28km
    Time: 40min 52sec
    Pace: 5:36/km

Took a day of rest, not a bad run felt pretty good throughout which was nice.
    I'm aiming for a 30km or 50kmn cycle today :)

    August 13th Run:
    Distance: 7.27km
    Time: 41min 34sec
    Pace: 5:43/km

    August 14th Cycle:
    Distance: 76.50km
    Time: 2hours 58min
    Avg Speed: 25.8km
    Max Speed: 53.5km

Didn't hydrate enough before and during the cycle so after 50km odd I was very tired and had a lack of energy, it meant my average speed dropped from 29km an hour to 25.8km an hour :(

I was due a long run yesterday (Sunday) but legs were very tired in the morning and by the evening I had managed to get sun burnt on my trip to the beach so that fecked up my plans, doubt I'll manage a run or cycle today due to the sun burn

    August 17th Run:
    Distance: 7.26km
    Time: 40min 02sec
    Pace: 5:31/km

I didn't get my long run in due to sun burn and I took yesterday as a rest day as the sun burn was still killing me, but felt better today so did a run.

Happy enough with the time, maybe the rest did me good :D

Might try fit in a cycle tomorrow if I can...

    August 31th Run:
    Distance: 5.01km
    Pace: 5:23/km
    Time: 27min 03sec

Just finished a 12 hour shift when I did this run, supposed to do a 8km but didn't have time.

Starting to worry I've not put in enough work for the half marathon on the 18th, my aim was to do it in 2hours or under but thats looking mighty unlikely. My max allowed time I set myself is 2hours 15min which I think I may have to work at big time to reach,

Sure I've shaved off about 5min on a 5km since April but I don't think I've done enough at this stage, am I just stressing for no reason?

You're putting too much pressure on yourself by latching onto a specific time band. In my view your goals for the day should be (in order of importance):
    1) Complete the race
    2) Stay injury free
    3) Enjoy the race/accomplishment
    4) Finish as quickly as possible
    5) Look good in the photos
    ...
    ..

    9) Try and break 2:15
Next time, worry about the minutes and seconds based on what you have learned this time around.

But.... If you're still hung up on the numbers, plug your recent training times (5k, 10k etc) into McMillan's pace calculator, and you're consistently getting 1/2 marathon times between 2:00 and 2:10. Remember: Training times are always slower than race times.

    9Mile run this Sunday :)

You're putting too much pressure on yourself by latching onto a specific time band.

I know I am thats the problem :)
I kind of wanted to do the HM but do it in a respectable time (atleast for me), I know I shouldn't be aiming to do this as its my first HM and I have another one in Waterford in December but I guess I can't help it :)
In my view your goals for the day should be (in order of importance):
    1) Complete the race
    2) Stay injury free

Come hell or high water I'm finishing even if I have to walk it, I don't see this happening as at the most I see myself dropping my pace alot and slowly finishing it.

Injury wise, well touch wood I've been lucky to date with no problems since the shin splints....not even blisters :)
    3) Enjoy the race/accomplishment
    4) Finish as quickly as possible
    5) Look good in the photos

I'm def going to enjoy it, I've worked hard and I think it'll be all worth it
    9) Try and break 2:15
Next time, worry about the minutes and seconds based on what you have learned this time around.

Yeah I think this is what I'll have to do, I have over 12 months before the Dublin Marathon next year which is my ultimate aim since I started running. If I can do that in say 4 hours or under (3hours 45min?) I'd be thrilled.

It all seemed pretty far off when I started and I honestly never thought I'd say a 5km run is a short run but at this stage I'm seeing 8-10km as a normal enough run.....all very strange :)
But.... If you're still hung up on the numbers, plug your recent training times (5k, 10k etc) into McMillan's pace calculator, and you're consistently getting 1/2 marathon times between 2:00 and 2:10. Remember: Training times are always slower than race times.

Had a look at that alright, interesting stuff

Regarding times I got a e-mail about the HM the other day showing pace teams, I'm thinking that I'd like to see myself keeping pace with 110min but am I being crazy?
Remember the race starts at 10am.There will be a wave start so ensure you are in your time zone by 9.45. We will have pace teams to help people run at 90 mins, 100 mins, 110 mins and 120 mins, they will carry balloons so you can spot them at the start. See Route Map in Final Instructions.

The ideal way to run a race of this type is to start conservatively and run the second half faster. If you start too slow, it can easily be corrected. If you start too fast, it rarely ends in a happy place. Racing is a learning experience though and everybody has to have a few bad races to learn how to run good ones. You just have to decide if you're willing to risk this one being one of the learning lessons, in order to shave a minute or two off your time.

If you have another one in December where you can push the pace harder and take greater risks, then I'd suggest you start with the 120 guys this time around, and if you're still feeling strong after 9 or 10 miles, then push on past them for a sub 120 time. If you start with the 110 guys and it's faster than your ability, then you might find yourself drifting off the pace, and then eventually getting passed by the 120 pacers. The pace teams are all boards guys and gals (I'm one of the 90s), so make sure you come say hello.

    September 5th Run:
    Distance: 14.52km
    Pace: 5:52/km
    Time: 1hour 25min 20sec

So thats my 9mile done, not a great pace compared to other runs but felt pretty ok though I did have some discomfort in my shins.

Today I feel pretty ok compared to the lasttime I did 16km back in April, certainly not in pain.

This is something I've worried about, I figure if I could start the race at say 6:00/km pace and then slowly increase to say 5:30-5:40/km I'd be doing great.
Maybe do the first 10km at the slower speeds

    .

Think I'd prefer have it as a good race then bad so I'll aim to keep a steady enough pace that isn't too fast so atleast I'll be happy with it when I finish rather then starting too fast and killing myself.

Yeah think this is the best plan and certainly the safest at this stage,

Well done on the long run at the weekend - brilliant to see such a reduction in time! What are your plans for the week / goals for Saturday now? :)

    Thanks,
I'll be happy with doing the HM in 2hours - 2hours 15min, anywhere in that timeframe would make me happy as its what I always had in mind as I think its do-able.

Now just need to figure out where the hell I can put the car when I drive to Dublin on Saturday

    September 14th Run:
    Distance: 5.04km
    Pace: 5:44/km
    Time: 28min 58sec

Going to take it easy now, might fit in a cycle tomorrow but after that the next run its my half marathon

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 28,640 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cabaal

So finally I ran my first half marathon at the weekend, its the longest distance I've ever run and months back I set my goal as between 2hours and 2hours 15min.

So I set myself up to follow the 2hour pacers and kept it steady enough though I did loose some time at the first water stop (first time ever using a water stop at an event) but I quickly learned and when we reached the playing pitches in the park I decided I felt ok enough to pass out the pacers.

When I got to the 600metre mark I upped my pace to finish in 1hour 56min 48sec accordingly to my chip time. I honestly couldn't be happier. :pac::pac::pac:

    September 18th Run:
    Distance: Dublin Half Marathon
    Time: 1hour 56min 48sec

I've been taking it easy the last few days and I've had no running and I feel pretty ok so looks like I've done myself no damage, I'm going to go for a nice very easy 5km run tomorrow and take it from there.

I won't be doing the Dublin Marathon this year but I'm def going to sign up for the half in Waterford in December :D

Which app is the official Couch to 5k? Is there a link - When I search for it, there's a load of options?

There is no official app of sorts, its just a training plan

I suppose this would be one popular site http://c25k.com/
