Freshers Week

Hey starting Maynooth in September and just wondering if anyone new when Freshers Week was and what has been planned for it tanx

^In fairness, first year is all about the partying, well if you're doing arts it is anyway. Freshers' week is the week of the 20th, which is the week after orientation week. There will be events on every day and night in the SU and campus will be buzzing.

Lectures also commence that week so make sure you attend most if not all of them. May the force be with you.:cool:

Well if you don't pass you won't even finish your degree,
so I'd suggest only being drunk half of the time!
Depends on how you want to live your life really.

Theres was a lod of the big inflatible things, and gladiator fighty thing ouside the su for a day or two. Some sort of party/tournament each night, i.e a reason to get drunk every night, with a ball on the last night with some theme or other. Back to the Future was last years, though tickets are a bugger to get after the first day or after they come out :rolleyes:

That sounds cool but when do we find out where it all is and all that sort of stuff? And this is probably a stupid qustion but what is the "SU" ?

Worth mentioning though that if you're in business/accounting/finance etc. Some top firms may want to look at transcripts including first year results.. not set in stone but it is a possibility, especially the likes of Deloitte & PWC (graduate recruitment programs).. Google is another one that i've heard.. This has been the experience of some people I know anyway. Work hard, party slightly less hard would be the way to go I would think, if your in that field anyways. Just a bit of advice is all, first year is definitely to be enjoyed as fully as possible though I would say

Is that the same if you go to do a PGDE after? I know they don't wait for you to graduate and look at your 2nd year marks, do they look at your first year marks too?

Same for most things that you apply for before you have a degree really!

squishyskins, I couldn't comment with any certainty about a PGDE.. All I can say is I imagine they would have a look at first year, it might not be the be all and end all, but I would think they would to some extent alright, but thats just an opinion really

I imagine so XxMCRxBabyxX, Im only going into first year myself as a mature student so I wouldnt be claiming to be an expert, and I stress that, but I would say you're right there i'd say its similar across the board. What I know is from my own working experience and from friends in the area of Business and Accounting in particular. Accounting is particularly notorious. I have a friend who was asked for first year results of her degree about 4 years after she graduated when she had almost completed professional accountancy exams, and

for her leaving cert maths results from another.. I doubt ill be an accountant though, so it's all good. I will be in Business however so I will be trying to get decent enough grades from the beginning.

First year marks may not count towards your degree, but your whole student record is usually examined if you ever decide to apply for a scholarship or funding.
You may not be planning to do a Masters or PhD now (most people don't go into college planning these things, I think); but you may have decided to do a postgrad by the time you finish your degree and it'd suck to get to that point and be stuck with grades from years 1 & 2 that you wouldn't be proud to show to a funding body.

The hardest parts of first year are maintaining good habits and not getting too drunk too often in the SU.
