Could be dampness. Wrap them in a towel and throw them in the hot press for a couple of hours. If that doesnt work, open them up and check for corrosion.

Retro could be right about the fat PS1. I had that exact problem with my very first PS1. Dont think it affected the slims though.

thanks for posting that webpage, i have that fat PS1 laying in a box in my garden shed, since the PS3 came out, this thread got me thinking that if its working, i should at least pack it away proper and introduce my kids to it in years to come.

Well guys I believe me and my Dad have found the problem and we almost bloody fixed the thing. We ripped the thing open without looking up any guides and/or fixes. I noticed both consoles had the same laser thing (different model numbers) I asked my Dad to change the motors. He done so after 92 hours or so. We replaced the motor and put the same laser back into the fat ps1. we turned the beast on and the disc was spinning! hooray! Went up to test it and no luck. Same thing. We opened it back up and I pressed the disc tray thing. it spun but died after two spins same thing happened again and again. We pressed the button repeatly and it spun like it should. My Dad told me there is a circuit that presses the button on and off like that. So he said that the circuit died and so did the ps1 with it. Fml. The other one recieved no attention. We let it die

The lasers on all sony consoles are notoriously crap. They wear out far too quickly.

But at least you can be glad to know that the PS2 & PS3 feature (near?) perfect emulation of PS1 games -- only issue I can think of would be special peripherals (e.g. GunCon).

The Guncon works perfectly with the ps2. So no worries there.

It's not so much the ps2 emulating the ps1 in a traditional sense. As far as I know the ps2 shares some common processor chips with the ps1. So it's almost like you have a ps1 in there.

Just remember that you need a ps1 memory card to save games.

    Here's something interesting I found that I didn't know about -

The PS2 adds two new features to improve your PS1 game experience called "Fast Loading" and "Texture Smoothing" Both can be accessed in the system menu when you boot the PS2 without a game CD.

Those features aren't bad but they can ruin some games. MGS relies on the sharpness of the unfiltered textures so it can ruin some bits and the fast loading can cause problems in games like Silent Hill were the cutscene sound is streamed in off the CD.
