What exactly are points?

I'm new to gambling and anytime I look here I always see "I've got X to win at 2.50 points" or something like it. I understand odds but are points only for online betting?

It's just handier for punters who want to keep their staking private.

Usually it's a 1pt to 5pt measure, with 1pt being a weak confidence selection and smaller stakes and 5pts being a full confidence, maximum bet.

It's better than telling people who much you're winning/losing from gambling.

Ah right. I thought it was some online thing with a pt = X amount of euro or something. Thanks for clearing it up.
