How do I make an XP system Image for Backup

    I am looking for the simplist or no cost way to make a system image and back it up for XP home. I have managed to clean up my ageing laptop and get it behaving again and would like to save it now. I have a new ext harddrive and have just learnt to partition it. Any suggestions how a learner like myself should proceed? Can the system image be bootable? should i dedacate a partition on the new drive and what type of one should it be? What (free if possable) software is best to use?

    Download clonezilla, its free and easy to use image maker.

    Thanks james. Unfortunatly i couldnt get it working. i couldnt make a boot cd for clonezilla- not sure whats going wrong, could be my writer is knackered. will just have to do without.

    Don't know if this is your problem but if the file is an .iso extension you will need an iso burner. You can find a free open source one on the net.

    If you can't write to a CD then use Ntbackup to backup the computer (incude system state)
    to restore you have to install XP from disk etc and the service pack to the level you are on and then you can restore the backup you have made (rent a DVD or two bto watch while doing it)

    If your machine is capable of booting from USB then you should be able to get unetbootin to make one for you - download the ISO and you need a USB key that it can fit on

    if that don't work then try to get a mate to burn the CD for you



    Bottom line, you can't make a decent image of XP within XP because you can't properly backup files that are in use, ntbackup over a clean install is the best option if you have no other choice
