i'm trying to charge my htc desire at work. i plug it into the pc usb ports and opt for "charge only" on my device.

every couple of mins i get a popup on the screen telling me "symantec end point protection has disabled a usb hard drive" or something similiar.

any ideas here lads, is this just something i'll have to put up with?

    thanks

Sounds like your IT department have implemented a device control policy on Symantec Endpoint Protection to block USB storage devices, probably out of either fear of data being stolen or malware coming in via USB devices.

You could ask them if they could put an exception in for your device, which is possible with Symantec.

and it's likely this would be triggered even with charging only mode? there's no way they'll make an exception and it doesn't seem to effect the charging - but it does cause the annoying popup every now and again.

    USB cable has 4 wires

you just need the two for power, not the two for data

if the device takes mini-usb then get you hands on a usb cable for external hard drivers that can connect to two usb ports and just use the power assist one

some places epoxy the usb ports so you can't physically connect

oh right lol. i can plug the cable in and it does charge as i say, just the error is confusing (because it should be charge only) and annoying (because it keeps popping up).

Symantec is probably seing that the device is capable of doing storage, even if it is disabled and this popping up the warning.

Buy a usb charging plug and no pop up's, On my site I use Devicewall to do the same and have had a few complaints over guys wanting to charge iphones and getting the pop up's.
