Glad to see people sticking up for corballis. Always loved that course ( except for the 3 holes in the field on the back nine ) the worst has to be leopardstown for me.

Anybody else Reading this thread really want to play these courses? No? Am I the only one!

Played it Last week , It's in good shape , Well cut and maintained .. But absolutely no challenge in it .. Too many forward and too many short holes .

dunmore in cork is a joke

closely followed by berehaven, glengarriff, skibbereen, east cork(just in case anyone thinks I'm anti west cork)

1st 3 are just sh1tty pitch and putt 9 hole courses claiming to be golf courses
and skibb is a sh1t 18 that was an ok 9 hole course till the went up the mountain across the road,
as for the 4 green fields of east cork.......

    I better stop:mad:.............:o

Have to agree with you there, Soundsham. Of all the ones you've listed, Skibbereen is the one that cracks me up. Across the road is a total joke.

And Mickey Bowes's place in Fern Hill is woeful also. Is it still open for pay and play? I almost got killed there twice a few years ago, playing a Purcell match! The place is much too small for 18 holes.

Frankfield looks like fun also!!!! Never had the pleasure, but I know very few who went back to play there a second time.

I played Leinster Hills in carlow a few years ago just as it awful it was just a couple of fields on the side of a mountain!

Jesus, I had nearly forgotten about that place. Absolutlely lethal. Played there 3 or 4 years ago with 2 other lads and each of us had near death experiences at some stage. How nobody has been killed there is a mystery. A lot of criss-crossing. Needless to say I haven't been back!!

Deerpark in Howth for the greens. They as hard as granite, not receptive to anything and yet its like putting through mud! I didn't think that combination was possible

    Ah lad, that's harsh.
The place has no pretensions or snobbery to it.
It has variety and character, a decent test of golf.
Good facilities - since the upgrade.
And a friendly, welcoming membership :D

Another vote for Leopardstown. Awful. Agree with Deerpark in Howth too. Currently play in Donabate, it's not amazing but I'd probably be hunted away from my local Portmarnock so it'll do.

Last time I was at Leopardstown was '03 or '04. Remember in the reception there was a big detailed advertisement and design for the redevelopment of the course.

Pressume everything fell through going by comments here as the redesign looked fairly decent. Lot more bunkering and water to be introduced.

The course I played back in in the day notably the front 9 was shockingly bad. Though not Dublin Mountain/Hazel Grove bad ;)

Played the Grace O Malley 9 in Deer Park today, just wanted to get a few quick holes in and I have to say the course is abismal. The greens were in atrocious conditions, cut up and long, will not be heading back in a hurry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,610 ✭✭✭yaboya1

I agree with a lot of the poor courses listed but Hazel Grove is definitely, 100% the worst. It doesnt look like, play like or feel like a golf course of any description. Some other courses are badly maintained, too easy, too hard but they represent some sort of golfing challenge. This place is not. If you want to put someone off playing the game for life send them here!

Agree totally, East Cork is a grand course as you say without pretensions and a fine Golf Club.

    Worst:
    Glenamalure
Djouce - a pitch & putt course made into a golf course, also very wet.
Kenmare - Couldn't pay me to play it again, staff really rude, 4 hrs lost for ever.
Clew Bay - Amazing views but not a golf course
    Ross

Others that were ok but wouldn't rush back to play again:
    St Annes
    Castle Hume
Since when did the welcome of the in house staff become the main factor by which people critique golf courses?.

No one said it was the main factor, and IMO its definately a contributing one.

I think you'll find redeal made it the main factor for him when rating Kenmare (hence why I quoted his post).

This is a thread about "worst golf courses" not "worst in house staff" I could tell you stories about clueless, rude and ignorant staff in some of the top courses in the southwest, but that'd be pointless because you're there to play the course not to be serenaded by the clubhouse staff.

Imo while it's always nice to get a friendly welcome, it's not a factor at all in how I rate a course, it seems crazy to me that you could let the enjoyment of your round to be affected by some ignoramus working in the club house.

So if the conversation was about restaurants, you're recomendation would be the same if the food was thrown at you? Stop being ridiculous. What if a ranger was giving you undue hassle? Would that affect your opinion of the course? Its a package, you cant seperate The teeboxes and fairways from the clubhouse and staff. And regards redeal's quote, all he did was nention that the staff were rude, he also said that it was 4 hours lost forever. Do you think that the 4 hours lost forever were exclusively because of the rude staff? Or a combination of things?

I agree with Daithio on this one. 'Worst Golf Course' means exactly that. It's the course that's being rated. It shouldn't even include the clubhouse, let alone the staff's attitude.

If it had been 'Worst Golf Experience' then yes, staff have a large part to play in that.

Personally, I liked Kenmare - the old 9 specifically.

Clontarf or South County for me. It would take a big prize fund to get me back to either.

Dargle View - Bray. Desperate excuse for a golf course.

Pretty high standards the "little", I have played both and they are by no means the worst in Dublin let alone Ireland. You obviously only play premier courses?

Sillogue, Dublin Mountain, Hazel Grove are all "worse" IMO.

Oh sorry Mr Gen, i'll change my opinion just to fit in with yours shall I. South County is a tad better than Clontarf, but both are hell holes. At least SC might be half decent in 20 years with the help of a good designer. Clontarf is a no-hoper as an 18 holer.

Not questioning your choice or asking you to row in with my opinion. Just asking had you played any of the courses I had mentioned and if so did you feel they were better?

Played Sillogue and it was fine for a tenner or whatever it was. Heard bad things about Hazel's place so never bothered.

I ruled Dublin Mountain out after playing SC. It's built in the same field and I wasn't going to be putting myself through that again.

I appreciate that you don't like South County, but please don't compare it with Dublin Mountain. That's just daft.

    You're off your rocker pal.

Usually in great nick. Some lovely holes scattered around. Lovely clubhouse and practice area.

My only negative is a few holes on the front 9 are weak and rather dull plus the climb up the 18th :pac:

Hole 10 is in the top 5 worst holes i've ever played. Joke of a hole. 11 is marginally better and 12 even less so.
