Hi all did my 6km (36 minutes) last night in gym on treadmill at 1% incline...found it v tough...hate the treadmill...think after last night I hate treadmill more than rain!!

Quick qn for anyone going the HH half training plan - on Wednesdays it says "2m run or cross" - if people are doing cross -how long are you going it for? The same length of time as it says for the Saturday cross? Just wondering :confused:

Yea Im only 25 and I always think in miles when training too! It just seems less to me!!

But I do convert it easily in my head anyway as my work colleague is from eastern europe and she always speaks in km during our jogging conversations, so I suppose I think in both terms. When I did my 10km (hopefully ill be doing another one in a couple of weeks in prep for my half) I had no problem with the km markers.

Guess its all the same distance in the end anyway!!

Thinking of giving the Dublin half a go this year, and if I go ok and do not get injured I might try the full. The most I have ever ran is 9miles, and I ran 1 10k and about 6 5k's. I try to run about. once a week, and usually bike and swim once a week as well. running just over a 1 year now. Are there any good plans to train for? looking to go 1.24 or under.

Guys does anyone else out there dread the first few steps when you get out of bed in the morning?? I feel like such an old woman as my knees, ankles, well actually everything creaks for the first few steps - I just never know what to expect. Please tell me I'm not alone

I find the first few steps down the stairs to be the worst. Sounds like machine gun fire as every joint / bone cracks from my toes up to my hips (ankles tend to be the worst in the mornings)

In saying that, I have had creaking / cracking joints since I was in my early teens (legacy from a lot of mountain biking in my youth...)

I don't have the cracks, thank ****, but stairs are always fun the evening/day after a hard run.

Oh thank god! Sorry to be delighted about other people's pain but it does make me feel so much better :)

You're definitely not alone. I don't dread the first few staps as I've got used to what I'll call a lack of mobility first thing in the morning. It goes away after a few trips up and down the stairs, or a walk down to the shop for the paper.
    +1 on the cracking joints.

Im the same after the Long run on a sunday, especially the cracking... Any idea what causes it ?

Have to say I havent really had the stiffness and stuff (yet)

But I have been very good for stretching afterwards and I do think it really helps prevent this!

Dont like to preach, but maybe try to stretch more (if you arent?)

Although I have had sore joints during jogging (in particular my right hip) so I am goingt o start taking cod liver oil to help this..

Yeah, it was too much for me, both physically and logistically (kids off school etc) so I'm doing Pilates on Mondays, medium runs on Tues and Thursday and a long run on Sundays.

I have a similar issue..haven't run in a week and a half and wondering should i attempt my long run (9 miles) tomorrow or skip it and do a few 5 milers for the next few days instead..I dont want to do too much and get injured..advice appreciated?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,620 ✭✭✭✭2nd Row Donkey

Personally, I'd skip the 9m and do a few 5's before attempting the 9 again. If you did a 5 today/tomorrow and another one on Mon or Tues, you could attempt the 9 before the weekend.

Yes, thankfully I don't have too many cracks or joints pain but the soles of my feet do kill me for the first 3-4 mins every morning.

Anyone got an idea's why this might be. I get it every moring, regardless of whether I'm training the day before or not.

Thanks for d advice!..think i will head out this morning for 5 and see how i go over the next few days..want to keep the long runs up coz i have been told that they are key to doing a decent half.

Back from my LSR...did 10.25km..very happy with that - 1.06 but knees quite sore for last 3km...not a pain just achey...bought new runners a few weeks ago after gait analysis in elverlys so shouldn't be them...off now to do lots of stretching to see if it will help...happy running all this weekend...

im doing the novice plan so its just three runs a week (if you go for a cross rather than the 2 mile on day 3). I find the runs very manageable, but it is difficult to fit in all the cross too. I think the important thing is to get the three runs in consistantly, with one longer run.

Unfortunately I didnt get out for my cycle today as I felt crap all day, really wrecked and stuff, so i figured its better to concentrate on my 5 miles tomorrow, if the rain lets up!!

Did my 3.5miles today in 44mins.

Non stop, I 'm really loving this progress now.

Time is slow but I just hope I'll do far better on the day.

    Well done,

progress will be slow but it WILL happen !

No sessions for me this weekend, slight shin pain due to a long story about runners.

I'll get out tomororw for a light session and 10M on Wen morning.

I'm kind of following the HH plan - 3 short runs during the week and a long one at the weekend

Last sunday I was suppose to do 8mile and I did 10mile instead although it was tough.

Did 5mile , twice mid week and planned to do 11 mile today but ended up doing 14mile... the strange thing was, it was the easiest, most enjoyable run i ever did. I guess it was just one of those days where everything went right.

I'm doing the 'beffini challange' at the end of the month which is just short of the HM, been 22KMs in total, that'll be the longest 'race' i've competed in to date. So I guess its just a case of keeping up the sunday runs and hope i can peak in 3 weeks time.

Well done mate! I'm kinda at your range pushing over my 10 mile marker but 14..thats impressive.

    Thanks Iceman.

One piece of advice - Vaseline!! or better still - body glide.

With about 2 miles to go I started getting a slight stinging pain on my upper thighs were the elasticated inside netting of my shorts meets the top of my legs. Now I'm walking like John Wayne. Must have went through half a tub of sudocream last night.

hopefully another dose of sudocream tonight will do the trick and I can get back out Tuesday night.

Well done everyone who managed to get out and do your long run at weekend. Unfortunately I didnt manage it yesterday, I have been feeling crap (again) and was shattered all weekend, even after early night and sleep ins I am still wrecked today. Im clueless as to what the hell is up with my poor body but Im looking at my diet as there has to be something to it!!

Anyway, I have learned to listen to my body and reluctantly I gave it a break at the weekend as past experience has taught me not to push it.

Hope fully this week will be better :(

Yungwan hope your feeling better soon..diet is v important and you do need to be eating enough to give you the fuel you need...went for my 40 min cross (cycle) yesterday and stayed out for 1:20 having eaten only a banana..legs were dead on the way back in from Sutton and headwind was a killer and not the better of it for the rest of the day...Mind youreself :)
