In the 3 weeks I've had mine it I've enjoyed using it a lot more than the netbook I have. I'm not an apple fanboy, I'm well aware of its shortcomings but it does what it does very well. To answer the original question I personally think its not a passing fad. Not for any outstanding technical brilliance but because its the first step in a trend towards changing the way the masses consume media. I was one of the "its like a big itouch" people. Using it for an hour made me see why that comparison does not hold true.

Will there be better devices out soon?? - Probably
Is it over priced? - Yip, but hey - that's economics for you.
Even so its a better first effort than anyone else has been able to make in this area to date.
Finally.. this thread might get back on track!

I'm all for a discussion on it's shortcomings.. but recycling the same points (even when they've been addressed numerous times on thread and elsewhere) is just irritating!

How so? Just curious about what Jailbroken ipads are being used for.

Decent multi-tasking for one using the excellent Backgrounder - hold the Home button to send an application in the background (without ending it). And then you can re-open it with everything resumed.

Also FullForce is great for scaling up certain apps without shoddy pixel-doubling (the Facebook app being the big one.. Facebook needs a HD version of their app as the website is terrible on the iPad - no chat, no upload of photos etc.).

Perhaps it's time to rethink the rules for this forum. If on the soccer forum, I went into Manchester United thread and started posting uninformed rubbish I'd be rightly banned. If i went into that forum saying Liverpool were the greatest team and anyone who follows Man U was wrong i'd be banned. I'm all for discussing and reading about the cons of Apple, their products and how they do business in a mature manner unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the place to do that.

Back to the original question. I certainly don't think it's a fad. They've been selling a million a month and it's only available in a few countries. I'd like to know how many units the leading netbook sells per month. I believe that in a couple of years time they will be commonplace. The other manufacturers really need to get their Tablets out soon or they'll be left behind again.

Essentially that's the crux of this. the iPad will iterate and will change but it's never going to be the product that it's critics want it to be. It's a mass market product that is aimed at people that don't want the hassle of installling software, virus checking and the like.

Those that want to tinker with their os and have complete control over all settings aren't going to like the iPad, or iPhone for that matter, and that's the way Apple want it because Apple are making huge amounts of money by appealling to the non-geeks. What amazes me is how many people take this change in direction as a personal affront.

I have to say the Ipad looks freakin hot!
I have never bought an apple product and dont plan on buyin this new ipad. But have used ipods and iphones and Apple desktops which are cool for media stuff, but i just dont like them even though they look cool and fancy.

I just cant understand how Apple can charge SO much money for something that costs well under €100 to make in chain/taiwan!
I guess people will always follow the herd.

Estimates of manufacturing costs from iSuppli start at $220.

That estimate doesn't include development costs (software and hardware), shipping costs, head office costs, store rents, store staff salary, tax, sales tax etc etc etc etc.

Windows 7 probably costs €2 to manufacture (disk and packaging), do you think MS should sell it for that?

    Not at all!

We've addressed the iPad's shortcomings and we're all for discussion on it but then you get something like this:
has nobody noticed that the ipad is pretty much 4 itouch's taped together, i thinkapple will only last a short amount of time i they keep making these sh1t gadgets, example: itouch became an itouch with a really bad phone in it, itouch then ate one of the mushrooms super mario used to eat and became 4 times its size and got the name ipad. people say its revoloutionary but its not, its battery lasts about an hour or 2 if you are using it, its VERY slow browsing the internet, the screen decides tho turn to a different angle on you alot and when you turn it to that angle it turns back, it cant even play internet videos. I ask why did apple put so much money into making what they had even worse? the thing is so unpractical, at least with the itouch you can put it in your pocket.

Sorry about the big long arguement but i just think the ipad is a peice of sh1t

The paragraph is misinformed, inaccurate and unfounded. And this was posted simply to serve the purpose of blasting a product the poster clearly had no experience or interest in.

Or to be a sheep and go with the "in-thing" of blasting Apple.
