That's not the end, you've forgotten the painful shuffle to the pub for the best-tasting pint of your life. :pac:

    Oh yeah !

hmmm, would i make it all the way to Keoghs ????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,090 ✭✭✭shazkea

ah completly forgot that part - will have to factor that shuffle at the end into my training plans. Straws will have to be used though cause I won't have the energy to lift a drink!

haha so true! I nearly gave a woman a heart attack one day too. But ya know what I find? When Im passing by someone I all of a sudden get all show offy and pull some pace out of the bag!! Hilarious! I sprint past!! haha

Hee hee, I do this too, especially if Im running out at my parents place where I grew up, hold myself much stronger than i do when Im out at my place int the middle of nowhere! Couldnt let anyone think I was struggling in any way, ever - stupid pride!
    shazkea wrote: »
yungwan I do that as well, could be dead on the feet but it's a pride thing so I look like I'm doing fine.

BTW what's the etiquette in passing people out. On the routes I use now, there's always people taking up the path and I find it hard to try and get around them. How do you politely warn people that you are running up behind them without having to scream at them.

To be honest it's always bunches of women I find it harder with (i'm female so I can say that!!). Blokes always seem to get out the way easier and quicker.

I dont need to warn them at all, they hear my heavy breathing and the thump thump thump of my exhausted feet and make way out of fear!

On the music thing - I always listen to music during training runs, helps keep me moving (I lip sync along when things get tough - the locals out here think Im mental), but didnt use it all during the Dublin WMM because the atmosphere was so good. I started the Galway WMM without it but turned it on after about a mile, I just wasnt feeling the same buzz as in Dublin. I may not have made it up Threadneedle without Robbie Williams singing 'let me entertain you' to me... come on, come on, come on, come on.... kept me going!

As for the training, I had a 3.5 miler this morning - Im thrilled with myself because I did the first mile in 9:54 - its the first time I did a mile in under 10 minutes - yay me! whole run took 36.21, which is a little 10:20 per mile pace - probably may best pace so far too. Theres hope for me yet!:D

TG, that's great well done on the pace; it is a really good feeling to see the progress. All your training is def paying off :)

I left the ipod in the car this eve during the run and omg I sound like a steam training when I'm running with all that huffing and puffing and that was only 3 miles! The thought of 20 miles (athlone 3/4) without an ipod...that's worse than the thought of actually having to run 20 miles!

That's great :D. Might try that one tomorrow eve and see how I go.
I was screaming "watch your back" at people on Sunday and all they were doing was stopping and looking around but still blocking the path.

no problem..... just as long as you promise to do the same to me!! :D
It definately does help!! I really dont want to log and say I didnt go because.....

3.5 in the bag also. [go me!!] Although i didnt manage any improvement on my last Tuesdays time - 47 mins. I dont have any fancy gadgets to measure my mile by mile speed but hopefully soon. But I do feel that my first mile was definately faster than 13 mins, kinda struggled after this.

P.S - Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to the Garmin 305? I basically just want something that can measure my distance and speed.

I was really struggling with running last week and I put it down to my diet. I am trying to lose a bit of weight and I think my diet was really affecting my running. I've decided to just cut down on the bad stuff and eat healthy and get some carbs in, I was trying to cut out / reduce carbs.
I am getting carbs in and I feel alot better.
I did an hour of football last night and 3.5miles today and I felt alot better. The route I take is extremely hilly with really tough climbs but I did the 3.5 in 40mins, not breaking any records but its a tough route.
After 2 weeks feeling like I was going backwards it feels great making progress!!! Gonna try an 8miler at the weekend on a flat course.
    Onwards and upwards,,,
Cest - if I manage the 8miles on Sunday is it a big step up to the 13.1 ??

I know it's not 100% accurate but would you use mapmyrun.com to plot a run and then just a regular digital watch to time yourself.
Maybe when I become more addicted i will invest in something more technical!

I'm laughing at all the ways to get walkers out of the way. I just come right up behind them and politely say 'excuse me'. They seem to jump back and apologise profusely. Men are much better at moving than women. And then like we all do, we gather up speed and leave them in the dust!!! I love it! :D

I have a Polar RS400 but will upgrade to the Garmin in Sept. The Polar uses a footpad and means i can only use one pair of runners. I want the Garmin so i can have 2 pairs of runners and change between them.

Anyways was out last night to recalibrate my Polar with my new Kayanos and only did 1.5 miles in total.

Back out at lunch today and did a new 5.5 mile route with a killer hill to biuld stamina and did it in 50 min so was well pleased with that 3 days after my 1st half.

Planning 4 on friday evening and 10ish on sunday morning !

I have a very quick shower and stuff something down my neck, just over an hr in total ! I'm on flexi time in work so i just get in earlier or stay later to even it up.

Also as my fitness gets better i can get more done in less time !

I'm finding it tough at the moment. I'm up at 7am, working til 1 and then again from about 4-8.30 but 1-4 is spent driving to the other jobs. They are kind of like grinds so I'm driving around a lot and I don't really get a chance to eat. I get really stressed out too as I usually end up sitting in traffic for about 2 of those hours.

I'm fitting my runs in alright, but I am feeling sooooo tired!

I should be in a private lesson now but I cancelled it as I'm wrecked.

Supposed to be doing 2m tonight but I don't think it will happen to be honest. Might take this as my rest day and do my 2m on friday.

Its a long day but remember you don't need to run every day and planning is the main thing. Plan your food for the day even if you need to bring it with you and try to run on the day that is "quiet" if you have one.

Food is just fuel when your training so eat in traffic etc !

If you are too tired then don't do it as you won't enjoy it and it can be negative on the long run ( no pun )

I have days that start at 6 am and finish at 4 am, i eat when i'm driving and when i'm off and not training i REST.

3.5 miles again today. Managed to shave 5 mins off it from previous days so maybe I just need to push myself a little more. Hilly in places.... Delighted with myself.
Also went for a hilly cycle yesterday eve to help build up the quads!

Looking forward to my rest day tomorrow with a well deserved glass of vino. :)

Did 13km yesterday (just over 8 miles) which I'm delighted with :D . Felt good after finishing, a little tired but to date that is the furtherest I have ever ran in my life!!!
Took me 1hr 30mins. I always struggle with the first 2km (1st km took 8:35min) but I hit my rhythm and was doing about 7mins per km. My final 2 km I pushed myself and got them around the 6min mark.
Feel fine this morning and but I'm heading to Cork for a friends birthday tonight so I'll probably be undoing all the good work!!

It is the metric system that we and what I use myself with day to day life. I suppose for myself km seems better that miles (13km compared to 8miles), but that's just me and breaking a run down into kilometres is easier for me to achieve as a kilometre is easier to run than a mile. Is it running etiquette to calculate runs in miles rather than Km. I'm new to running only started in April.

    You'll fall into line eventually;)

Pace in KM i haven't a clue unless i convert to miles to be honest !

You might find a Km easier to run.............but there are more of them:D

Running uses the most mixed up syatem of Km's and Miles.

Track would normally be in metres (10,000) where road up to 10K would be in KM (Except for 5 Miles). Generally everything over 10k would be listed in miles.

I have considered converting to metric (since all our road signs etc are in Km) but my old skool brain refuses to make the change (and I am only 32!!!)

Better to use a system your brain can handle and stick with it....

Good practice for running on continent. Did my first half in spain last year had done all my training in miles and had my splits worked out only to realize the course had k markers rather than miles. Threw me off a bit. I think many people count there "mileage" out of habit and because of the settings on the Garmins given in miles
