Wow Elvis well done! You did so well!

You should be delighted you managed to complete it, you can work on your time some other race!

If I manage to do it in that time Ill be delighted to be honest!!

    How do you feel today?

I feel fine, i might go for the cycle this evening to loosen out my legs.

I plan to run a 26.2 KM in Aug and focus on Longford on Aug 29.........

    YAY!!

I decided to try my best and I ran 3 miles today without stopping!! In 38.56.

The time is more or less the same but I just slowed down a bit. I have realised that I think I was pushing myself to run too fast which was causing me to have to stop and walk for bits.

yungwan (I always lol when I type your username!) you are right, eventually its less effort to go on running than it is to stop and start again.

I love this thread - it really motivates me to keep going!!

    Hi all,

well i can now say i completed a half marathon !!! Which took me 2:20 but conditions were like hell in the final 4 miles.

Overall it was good but on the way back just past the 9 mile point we were on the beach and the winds were geal force in our faces which by itself is hard but sand was also blowing turning it into a full on sandstorm.

Pace dropped and you could bearly see, it was energy draining and it was just a matter of putting one foot in front of the other and keep moving.

The bridge from bullisland back onto clontarf and gusts as well and they just blew you sideways and almost knocked you over.

My 1st half was 1:04 with wind behind me at certain points, second half took 1:16 and tells it all really.

A lot said it was the hardest race they had ever done.

Overall it was enjoyable and without the sandstown i would have done sub 2:10 as my times up to that point were all well below 10 min a mile.

I know now i can do it and Longford will be much easier without any sandstorms:D

But before that i'm thinking of doing a 26.2KM race on Aug 8th, its only a step up of 3 miles in 5 weeks so that should be ok.

Elvis...well done!! thats totally amazing. Was heading into westwood for a spinning class when ye were all registering...and I have to say I wasnt jealous!! Weather was bizarre and didnt make thinsg easier:):):)

PH I've only been running (actually I should say jogging rather than running if I am being v honest :D) about a year and the best piece of advice I got was from a seasoned runner who said to me that if your jogging and you are too out of breath to talk then you are going too fast and slow down..I was taking off at high speed and then grinding to a halt - I tried this and its what helped me to crack it..give it a shot

Good on ya! :D If its any consolation I had a sh*t run tonight. Tryed something I've never done and brought my phone with music with me...fatal mistake. Headphones kept falling out, ran too fast! went out on a whim for a short one without warming up.. Oh well you live and learn, not a clever monkey.

Yes two things i have learned oh so well

    1. clip on ear phones the way to go

    2. regardless how fast you think you going on a run, with music you always end up going faster. Great for tempos or steadier runs not so much for recovery runs:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭iceage

Lesson learned for sure Ecoli, its not like I needed music I run quite happily without it and if I'm honest I enjoy the peace and quiet..except for roundabouts, christ I hate roundabouts, just the action of running and the sound and rhythm of my breathing..clears my head :) Deep I know but its true.

I disliked running when I was younger when I had to run type of thing. School, Jobs, other pursuits etc, but I've rediscovered it in the last couple of years and honestly I can say I've become a bit of an addict and a bit selfish with my time for running, if I don't run when I feel I should cabin fever sets in and in the end My Wife tells me to go and get a run in! Hence tonights run.

Stick with it guys and girls, mind yourselfs and enjoy it. Its the cheapest and most rewarding form of exercise there is. Set your goals but keep them reachable.

Podcasts are the way to go - Mark Kermode's movie reviews, Guardian Football with James Richardson, or something from iTunes U, the series about the American Civil War is great.
Stop you getting bored on long runs, but don't make you go faster by accident.

Strangely enough I HAVE to listen to music when I jog!!

Just goes to show you that everyone is different. :)

I find the music relaxes me and gets my mind of thinking about how much longer I have left etc. Also the upbeat songs spur me on. One of my favourite songs to run to is that Florence and the Machine one with the "Run fast for your mother, fast for your....." dunno the name but ya know the one!!

Well done Peanuthead, its all about mentality I think, tell yourself you're well able to do it!!

3.5 due this evening, hopefully it stops raining!

Sorry but you THINK you need music. I was the same but some races don't allow headphones so it good to be able to run without them as some people carsh when faced with the prospect of not being able to use them.

I stopped using them in march and don't miss them at all, it was just a decision that had to be made i went out 1 day and did 3 miles.......and i lived:D

You can hear breathing better, hear your foot strike better and overall now i think running is a much better experience without them.

It will be hard but its something you won't even think about once you stop using them ( oh and i'm a dj so music is with me the whole time )

Turtle and not the hare.....................speed will come with time, at the start its all about time on the feet and going at a good pace that you can still breath and hold a conversation with someone.

There is a walking/running track around a golf course where i live and its 2.92 miles. When i started running i did it in 34 min and every so often i go out and push myself to the limit to see have i improved. My last clocked time was 24 min, so with time you will improve but it takes time.

Look at that 3 miles again in a month and i but your time won't be 38.56

Oh and now that i've completed the half marathon can i consider myself a sort of Mr Miyagi figure ha ha

I listen to music always when I'm running so I guess I'm used to it. Forgot to charge the bloody ipod though and battery went during sunday's run. It nearly drove me nuts listening to the foot strike and my breathing.
I think the music distracts me but when I had to listen to myself breathing I couldn't forget I was out for a run if that makes sense!

I would love to be able to run without the ipod so any tips on how not to let my breathing put me off my rhythm.

PS Elvis well done on that half marathon. I was down at the finish on Sunday morn and conditions were a nightmare. Everyone was rubbing the sand out of their eyes after the finish line

    Cheers for that,

The ipod thing is mind over matter and you'll get there eventually, its hard at the start but soon its just normal to run with no headphones at all.

If you cycle its what you do anyway so perhaps that made it easier for me to go cold turkey:p

It can be safer too with some of the idiot on the roads, but thats a different matter.

lol it freaks me out when I can hear myself breathing!! I sound like I'm going to collapse but I actually feel fine! :pac:

I scared the hell out of lady one day. I was trying to pass her out and she jumped out of her skin and nearly screamed :D

haha so true! I nearly gave a woman a heart attack one day too. But ya know what I find? When Im passing by someone I all of a sudden get all show offy and pull some pace out of the bag!! Hilarious! I sprint past!! haha

To be honest I dont really be out of breath on my jogs, I just sweatt profusely (with salt oozing out on my face too, like wtf!!??)

Oh happy 6 month anniverary Dolliemix!! ;)
    Whens the holidays?

yungwan I do that as well, could be dead on the feet but it's a pride thing so I look like I'm doing fine.

BTW what's the etiquette in passing people out. On the routes I use now, there's always people taking up the path and I find it hard to try and get around them. How do you politely warn people that you are running up behind them without having to scream at them.

To be honest it's always bunches of women I find it harder with (i'm female so I can say that!!). Blokes always seem to get out the way easier and quicker.

Cheers!!! I'm heading Thursday for three weeks. I'm going to be so behind everybody here when I get back in three weeks. :( But I'm hoping the progress I see here will be a massive motivator to get my back on track asap!

I just posted on your profile page. By the time I get back I'll be congratulating you on 6 month anniversary! :)

    .

Fit yourself with a bicycle bell!!?? lol :D Imagine?!

Im looking out at this rain and thinking my 3.5 is going to be crap later :(

What wet gear do you all wear? I hate wearing waterproof tops that make me all sweaty. What running gear is there out there on a budget that will also breath?

:D Yeah a bell would work nicely. Am also thinking of bringing a scissors with me on all runs so I can cut through those bloody long leashes!

Re waterproof tops, I have 2 options. Got a cheap lidl one which is light weight and not bad. Sale on there next week too! It was about €8 I think.

Gotta a pressie of a Nike jacket where you can take sleeves off and it has those breathable pouches. So either start dropping hints for pressies or pick one up in the sale!

Both wash great so I don't have a preference.

Just a piece from the Athlone 3/4 marathon site

Are iPods and MP3 players banned?
Personal music devices are banned for safety reasons. This is not something we can actively monitor and we appreciate your co-operation to maximise race safety.

Oh and i don't bother with water proof gear in the summer as my top is wet with sweat after a few miles anyway !

I do in the winter with compression top underneath.

At this time of year, it's easiest just to wear a t-shirt and shorts, you'll only be too warm if you throw a jacket on over that. Be especially careful about chafing though if running in the rain, wet clothes can chafe more.

For the winter though, I have a couple of jackets - got a DCM '09 jacket in Lifestyle a few weeks ago for a tenner, and last winter I mostly wore a Lidl running jacket over a long-sleeved top.
