yeah I know I'm going to have to make time for it. Lunch is on the go though as it is, but I will find the time for sure.

How do people take care of their feet? Mine are getting sore and blistery (sorry for the TMI!!) lol

To be honest Im jogging properly since March but I have had to take two weeks off recently due to chest infection. Ive never been the quickest, I just concentrate on finishing!

Best of luck at the weekend! I hope it all goes well for you.
What do you do for hydration during your training? Just you just pre hydrate or do you drink during it? At the minute I dont drink while jogging but obviously as my time increases Ill have to.

I pre hydrate mainly. Anything under 10 miles i normally wouldn't bother with bringing or stashing a drink along the way.

Don't worry about time off, i have had 7 weeks in total since last Oct between injury and chest infections !

Speed isn't a concern now either, i remember going out for the 1st time and saying i want to do 1 lap of the block ( 1.5 miles ) i took it easy and completed 2. 4 weeks later i did for laps ( 6 miles ) in 64 min so its about building a little at a time.

    That skin will harden eventually:D

When i started i had the same problem over longer distances and changed from nike to asics and rubbed some vaseline on the parts that were a problem and its fine now.

If you have to get new runners get the gait anaylis done in a proper running store as well.

I swear by 1000 mile socks. They keep my feet so cool and blister free.
They were recommended to me by a friend and they are great I have to say. No blisters for me since I started using them.

When I did get blisters I used Compeed patches for blisters. They're expensive but great. Kind of seal the blister altogether and doesnt even come off in the shower if you dont want it to.

I have never heard of the ones from lidl/aldi, I must look for them!

They're not on sale all the time, it's just every now and then they'll do a running gear promotion, selling socks, tops, etc.

is everyone doing the 5M on July 17 as part of the adidas race series ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 286 ✭✭Dow99

+1 with the 1000 Mile Socks but I also use the Lidl socks as well. Lidl socks are good but a little bit heavier than 1000MS! 1000 MS are expensive at about €14 a pair.
I used to suffer big time with blisters but did the Gaits Test and since I've been blister free. Could not recommend the Gaits Test enough!!

Yep, Im doing all 3 in the series, really looking forward to it.

re socks, I must be some sort of cheapskate, Dunnes stores finest have been doing a mighty job for me so far - no problems yet, although my longest run was 6.2 miles so I could be eating my words by the time we get to half marathon day!

5M and 10M for me, i get back from the states the morning of the half so not much hope of doing that.

As for the socks, each to their own i say !!

    Hey!!

Did 4 miles today (actually did 6.5 kms)

Did the first 3 miles (or 5k) in 39.10 mins. A slight bit faster than before again.

But the last mile I really crawled, even walking the last 05km at a very very very slow pace.

Completed a little over the 4miles in 52.30 mins.

Well done peanuthead. Four miles is no easy feat.

In relation to cross training Im just wondering how everyone is getting on fitting in this with everything else?

I was due to go for a cycle yesterday but the weather was horrendus so I left it. I just did some stretches and light weights, squats and situps instead. Didnt overdo it.

Would I be right in assuming that the running aspect is by far the most important aspect of this training? If I were to leave one part out, obviously its better to get the running in than cross training?

I have to do 3.5 & strength this evening. Would a few light weights and stretches and sit ups (like last night) following the running be enough for this?

P.S re 1000 mile socks I bought mine on mandmdirect.com for €6.99. Good value. P&P obviously adds money on but I bought my traininers o here too for a good price so if you getting a few bits its worth it.

I cycle and thats it, i have to start using weights/

I bought a bike on the cycle to work scheme and use it maybe once a week. I have gone from maybe 10 miles up to about 30 miles at a time.

I find it saves my joints from a pounding but i still get the exercise.

I do intend to do triathlons in 2011 so i'll focus more on swimming in the winter.

Wow 30 miles! Impresive! I only do like 3 miles when I go but I usually have my 6 year old on his bike with me so its far enough for him.

Yes sometimes you need a break from jogging and cycling seems less work even though its not!

Good idea on the swimming in winter. I really want to do a triathlon next year too but id say i will get lazy over the winter jogging wise once my half is over. The weather puts me off!!

I went and bought a proper road bike so 30 miles is a nice distance on a good bike. I do intend to take a half day in work some day in the summer and cycle from dublin to portarlington which is about 44 miles............

A good triathlon to go with is Portlaosie as the swim is in the pool which is easier for a beginner.

Tipsygypsy - did you do the Galway Mini Marathon last wekend? Cant remember if you said you were or not. Were there many people in it? I didnt do it in the end because of my chest infection. Pity :(

Yep yungwan, really enjoyed it, finished it in 67:42 which was a PB for me - yay - It was a pretty good day out, windy on the prom and Threadneedle was tough but not as bad as I thought it would be. I think there was about 800 participants. Was a bit of a pain that the roads werent closed and because there was a match on locally we had to contend with lunatics parking all the way up threadneedle (because running up the hill wasnt enough of a challenge).
But it was good fun, sorry you missed it.

Re cross training - Ive changed my cross training tactic now the kids are off school and I cant get to the gym - going to be doing a lot of yoga and will try using some of the workouts Transform has put on the Fitness Forum. I'll try and cycle when I can, but realistically I'll be using all my oportunities (which will be much more scarce now) to get out running.
Might try using my kids as weights also!

Keep up the good work guys!! Its great to pop in here for motivation and to see how everyone else is coping!

Thats the plan...did 5km this evening (cant run miles only kms!!!) in 30:03..but both yesterday and today had nasty stitches - which I havent had for ages...yesterday was worse than today - blaming yesterday on lack of hydration - could that be the reason?
Am going to do my strength tomorrow at the gym in work and rest for the rest of the day! I am really learning to enjoy the time off!!

+1 on the 1000 mile socks..they are the biz and with sales on now I am going to stock up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 765 ✭✭✭yungwan

Oh Lord, someone does not want me to do this half marathon or something!! Lol

If there is one thing I am fast learning it is that training never seems to go exactly as planned!! Went for my 3.5 this evening but it didnt go well. Without giving too much info away I got a nasty stomach ache after about 1.5 miles and had to promptly call my OH to collect me so i could get to a bathroom (sorry!) So fed up, it all seems to be unravelling on me! And I was actually enjoying my jog too!

Oh well, im going to go again 2moro eve even though its a rest day. We are heading away for the weekend but I am hoping to still do my 5 miles on sunday evening and maybe fit in a swim on saturday. Fingers crossed.

Yes it could be. but ive also heard that drinking too cold of water can do this too. Apparently you should only drink room temp water.

Basic question, but what exactly does the strides part mean? Is this 100M intervals within the 5K run? or after? or something else??? I do 6*400 intervals on a Wednesday, but Strides???

    "5 k inc 6 by 100 metres strides"
