Has anyone any idea what to do now? I've fallen short of the NEW criteria that has been put upon us but I'm not going to go down without a fight. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that they have done this.
The e-mail we recieved gives us two months to get the relevent leaving cert qualifications or equivilent. For those who got excellent scores on their leaving but decided not to study a science subject, your gone also. What a load of crap!
They tried this with a number of trainees that started last October but relented after legal action was threatened. I for one will not be excluding this option.

Please don't PM me as I can't recieve or send them yet. 25 posts rule.

    hi,

im not on the pannel, but am trying , i missed the last deadline, by about a month, with my D licence. whats is the new critera that is being forced on the new existing members of the pannel. what has manor hamalton said in the email?

?you must have an Leaving Cert? at what level? science subject at what level. does ordinary surfice? will EMT cover you for science? what about maths, what level is needed there?

my head is melted and im not on the pannel, i cant imagine how some of the people on the pannel feel.

    Hi DUBDUBDUB.
It s leaving cert with maths and science subject OR leaving cert with maths and EMT with evidence of clinical expercience.......

have sent of for leaving cert results...... was wondering what level of maths ,,, as i did foundation maths B1 result .... ???? would this be regarded ?????

I am not sure but it looks like the equivalent LC requirements for the Gardai but with a science subject thrown in. I know for the Gardai its ordinary level. You , me and lots of other people are going to have phone them. I am from overseas and the last time i went for something like this the national qualifications authority of ireland took 3 months to tell me I did not have leaving cert maths!! By that time i already went through the process and was waiting on a medical. They would not check my quals before i applied as they said there had to be a competition running before they check!

Believe it or not i was knocked back for not passing maths when i was a kid! 17 years ago for christs sake. Is it even relevant? This makes a mockery of the whole aptitude test and interview system. Whats the point of it?

For anyone on the panel that does not meet the NEW conditions...

You have 5 working days form notification to lodge an informal appeal,. once this is recieved it will be looked at and you can start to fight your case

If they dont hear from you within 5 days, It doesnt count

    PM for furthur info

Anything. The leaving cert is Level 5 on the national qualifications framework, so a level 5 cert or above is equivalent.

Out of interest have you had that confirmed Elessar. In my experience even though FETAC Level 5 is on the NQF at same level as LC its not always accepted as being equivalent.
I know UCD aren't accepting any FETAC, LC Applied or Foundation level(I think) subjects for the Dip EMS.

    Email from UCD below

    Dear XXX,

The UCD entry requirements state 5 passes including maths and 1 science subject.

I’m afraid FETAC modules or (or the leaving cert applied) are not accepted in the place of this.

Remember too that it's not the HSE Ambulance service that is changing the criteria.
UCD are responsible for the Diploma in Emergency Medical Science and have requested that the existing criteria be changed to meet the standard required for UCD and that is Leaving Cert with maths and one science subject, or Leaving Cert with maths and a PHECC EMT qualification.

I do agree that it is very tough on those on the current panel so would urge those with the need to appeal to do so if that chance has been given to them.

Following the restructure of the existing panel, which has been extended until 31st August 2010, training is scheduled to start in September and October 2010, depending on what numbers remain on the panel, this will decide if there will be one or two classes.

I am led to believe that a further recruitment drive has been given the go ahead to put panels together for further classes in 2011 and 2012.

The very best of luck to you all.

Does anyone have any info on the HSE recruiting EMTs to staff PTS ambulances?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭MN_Medic

If there is anyone here who is on this class that didn't have these new ludicrous requirements can you please let us know what path you followed.

Ok,I am EMT qualified and am wondering what evidence to supply??? I mean what are they looking for? they dont accept references from employers apparently so what else is there to prove you have experience of acute or emergency care??

Would order of Malta experience count? If so, how do you provide evidence of this?? Are they looking for copies of PCRs or something. anyone??

    Anyone any ideas??

Also, anyone else from overseas in same position as me? I now have to get my educational certs into the national qualifications authority (as they dont keep you on file, even if you have went through the process before) and get confirmation i have leaving cert equivalent within 3 weeks. Then get the stuff over to the recruitment service by the 23rd.

It seems impossible but will give it a go.

    what's the address for appeals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,244 ✭✭✭darragh o meara

I would hate to dampen peoples hopes with appeal process. In my experiene they all back each other up. I had a rock solid case which I put through an appeals process and it was just shot down with the " we are right and you are wrong and we will back up our own " attitude. I'm currently in the process of getting the ratio of appeals approved and denied information under the Freedom of Information but Im sure it will be in the favour of apeal denied.

Also just a note, If they deny your appeal and it goes to a rights commisioner and he denies it thats it you cant do ay more about it. Ive since ben advised I sould have gone the legal route as there would be some area of neutrality involved.

Best of luck to all who are appealing

Would nt think its PCR S as we don t hold on to PCRs personally........
Can anyone make any suggestions of what would be good evidence of clinical experience????????

Out of interest is there anyone here on the panel who doesn't have the leaving but went on to do a higher cert/diploma/degree course as a mature student?

I'm wondering are they offered equivalancy seen as they would be higher on the NFQ than the leaving? Anyone any ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭paraletic

i can't believe ucd can be allowed do this to an existing panel.:(:(:(

ucd have been in charge of the diploma for years, so how come they couldn't make this big change in the selection criteria before the selection stage of the recruitment. instead they have done this as some of the panel are already training and the remainder are waiting to join them.

at this late stage of the academic year, it is now impossible to attempt a resit of the necessary leaving cert exams, that some of you might need, (i don't think you should have to, but i know how dedicated most of you are to getting into the course)

could you all not meet up in ucd in protest together? or is there a legal route?

don't give up lads, and appeal this late decision if you feel its unfair.

    good luck

All sent off this morning, in the lap of the gods now. how are you all getting on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭emer tech

All sent too :), really have no idea if it s enough ..... 50/50 chance now i d say ! They said they would start offering places for the Sept class from Thursday... does nt seem like UCD have much time to go through all the applications in a day, anyone know how they do the selection process ??

I would imagine they just have a big pile of about 90 applications left. there will be a big pile of yes, no ,maybes.

If there are going to be 2 classes of 24 (nothing for certain yet) then that equals 48.

Yes's will just pass a checklist, C1/D1 check, leaving cert with science check, no endorsements, check etc

No's will be missing one or more of the above.

Then the maybes. I think i maybe a maybe! HR did say its not cut and dried. "give us as much as possible to fight your corner and every application is on a individual basis" Now, you are going to need the licence obviously but i dont get it?? why a photocopy?? They checked it out when we did aptitude test but not the licence history.
I would imagine there has to be a bit of leeway with the leavin cert stuff. If you have done EMT and have been working in the privates or in OMAC/Johns/Red cross/Armed forces for years it would be madness to knock you back

After all, its a diploma and i know its not easy but we are not going to Harvard/Yale/Cambridge to study for a Doctorate in Astrophysics here. We all passed the interview and the dudes that conducted them have a better idea than anyone if you have the capability/life experience to do the job.

As i was told by an AP."No point having leaving cert/diploma /degree if you cant handle the traumatic aspects of the job. None of that stuff prepares you for a cot death, decapitation etc, People with life experience excel in the job and are better able to handle it than bookworms"

Good luck all, will be back on here thursday. Now i am going to shut myself in a dark room and pray.

    Hi K D,
It's on the letter we got from manorhamilton

" It is envisaged that the process of offering the September placements will commence on 24th June 2010. Offering of the October placements will follow"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,244 ✭✭✭darragh o meara

IS the requirement to pass the maths paper in the leaving cert or to do pass level maths??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭emer tech

Requirements for Diploma in Emergency Medical Science:
(They have changed the name from technology to Science !!)

    1. Minimum of five passes in the Leaving Cetificate (must include maths and one science subject in general terms, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are considered to be Science subjects), or academic equivalent.

    OR

1.Leaving Cert with maths, but without a pass grade in science , but with a PHECC EMT Certificate & revelant clinical experience in emergency and /or acute care

    AND

2.A full unendorsed class C1 and D1 driving licence.

    AND

    3. HSE Verbal Evaluation & Analytical Reasoning test. ( which we already passed and do not need to provide evidence of same)
