    Did a practice training run today. 21.1k in 1h58.

    If anybody wants to run the Strawberry Half marathon in Enniscorthy next week there are still entries available. I'll be pacing the 2hr group along with RacoonQueen. There will be pacers for 1h30 and 1h45 also.

    Hey GoHardOrGoHome, can I ask your advice on what to do this week, before Sundays half? I was thinking of doing 6 miles tonight, 4 tomorrow and another easy 4 on Thursday - just to keep me sane :o We have a wedding on Friday. It'll be my first attempt at a half, and I'm starting to get twitchy about it!

    starting my plan today with a big, gut wrenching, maximum effort.......................Stretch & Strength routine:D:o

    I did a long run of about 6.5 miles yesterday morn in the heat and it killed me. Like shanagarry said, Id on't think i was hydrated enough heading out and my head was pounding with a headache from about 3 miles on.

    It's great weather to be running in but I think I really need to be cautious with the sun. I'm always susceptable to headaches - I might try a hat to keep the sun off my "Golden Arches".

    BTW - anyone using suncream/block? if so, is there a waterproof or other useful one that runners use?

    That sounds like a good plan RubyK. I know exactly what you mean about getting twitchy! Doing those miles in the run up to the half should keep you ticking over nicely and help you sleep at night!

    The easy 4 on Thursday sounds good. For the other 6 miler and 4 miler I wouldn't want to finish these in an exhausted state. Are these easy as well? If for whatever reason you feel very tired during these don't be afraid to cut them short. Your goal is Sunday - there's no prizes for running a fast 6 miler in training if it leaves you drained. You should finish these last 3 runs feeling like you'd like to run a bit more - not exhausted!

    Do you have a time target? If you do I wouldn't get too worked up about it. Just try to finish (relatively!) strong which means starting off "too" easy. So based on a 10 mile time (if you've done one) which suggested that you could finish the half in 1h50 I'd go with the 2 hour group until at least halfway and if you feel good you could push on from there.

    I got stupidly burnt during the Wicklow Way Relay which I didn't really feel at the time because there was a nice cool breeze for most of the time. However, I used P20 for the first time and it's fantastic. You put it on in the morning about 30 minutes before getting into the sun and that's it. You don't have to put on more during the day. It also won't come out with your sweat into your eyes so it's good for that. (I find that regular suncream can get in my eyes and if you don't have some water to rinse it out it can be painful).

    I think Hunnymonster uses P20 during her Ironman conquests.

    If you're using regular suncream don't put it on 5 minutes before the race/training. Do it a good half hour before so that it's properly absorbed.

    Thanks a mill for your advice GHOGH :)

    The 6 miler tonight & 4 tomorrow, will both be done easy enough, with a very easy 4 Thursday. They will be done for sanity sake, rather than effort.

    I'm hoping for 1.59.59 on Sunday - I'll be following you and RQ :D. Nervous & excited, if that even makes sense?? It's going to be an interesting week!

    Running the Half marathon in Enniscorthy (my first). Being struggling with my ankle for the past 3 weeks, and haven't managed to run anything more than 10k, since running 22k in a training run at the start of the month.

    I'm worried now a week before the race, I haven't been able to put in anything close to race distance in the last few weeks, and wondering what I should do now in the coming days, as I am worried that I'll get to the half way stage and have nothing left

    Last night I hoped to to run 16k, however I decided to take a gel for the first time ever, to see if they would be of any use before next week. The result was I was only able to run about 8k, as my stomach was all over the place. At least I now know to stick to the water.

    I was half thinking of running 12/14km tonight, and then have the shorter runs on Wednesday & Thursday as per the HH novice half marathon plan.

    Is tonights run advisable, or should I just stick to the plan, and hope my run at the start of the month will get me through?

    Well done everyone on your training!

    Mine is unfortunately not going so well :(

    Still struggling to shift a cold I got last week which has now unfortunately gone into my chest.

    So annoyed and dying to get out again but I know its a bad idea.

    Last week (my supposed first week of the half training) I only managed to get a three mile done on Tuesday and another good 3 miler on Sat (which proved to my undoing health wise) and that was it, no long run and no cross. I dont want to push it again until maybe thursday when I aim to go for a gentle 3 miles and as I am registered for a 10k in Galway on Sunday Im just going to just aim to be well enough for that. :(

    Im really dissapointed that my training has started so badly but Im just going to concentrate on getting over this cold (fully this time!!) and then hopefully Ill be back on form to start again Monday next!! Stressing im leaving myself a little short time wise but hopefully I can make up for it further down the line!!

    Well done to all of you though, hopefully some day Ill be doing as well as you guys!!!
    Fingers crossed.

    Today is day one of Hal H Novice half training...but no actual running until tomorrow...aiming for Dublin half in Sepember and have also signed up for 5 and 10 mile lead in runs...I think I must be mad! just aiming to finish - its my first half - have done a few 10km races and have managed 12km up to now (but that was a while ago...) but it nearly killed me. :confused::confused:

    Lots of time to go.

    I did my stretching and strength today and although this is technically week2 for me I'm repeating week one. An incident with a dog on sunday meant that I couldn't do my 4m and an appointment tomorrow means that I can't do my 3m tomorrow, so I'll just start afresh this week, using my only 3m from last week to make up for tomorrow!!

    My weights were:

    leg press 3 x 12
    glute machine 3 x 12

    Lat pulldown 3 x 12
    seated rear row 3 x 12

    Shoulder press 3 x 12
    Chest press 3 x 12

    Bicep curl 3 x 12
    Tricep extension 3 x 12

    did all the ones in bold today, is that okay?

    Ok so my 1st half is less than 2 weeks away, after not running on fathers day i'm really up against it now.

    Here is the plan.

    Tomo : the full distance 13.1 miles with 2 drink stops along the way.

    Sunday : 5 miles at pace

    Tues : 3.5 easy

    Thurs : 3.5 easy

    Sunday July 4 : 13.1 miles at Dublin Multi Marathon !!!

    After that i'll focus on the Longford half on Aug 29 !

    I was planning to be well able for a half marathon by now, but college work really took over & I've become shockingly unfit.
    I actually played some football for the first time in ages yesterday, I thought
    "ah sure, if I was training for a marathon I should be fine in football"

    I later found out that there's a difference between running at a comfortable pace for a certain distance & full on sprinting randomly, chasing people who have the ball, losing the ball & then falling on your rear end.

    Back to square one for me

    PH - why did you just do some of the strength? just run out of time? I am only getting strength prog at gym tomorrow and (without thinking I should add..) assumed you should do it all in 1 day...but to be honest i dont really have a clue..

    Well, yes I ran out of time that day but I sometimes don't do everything in the one day as I might do whats left on my rest day

    Quick Question???

    Just downloaded the Hal Higdon Marathon Schedule (advance1) plan which im going to go with this year. I then pasted in the the DCM Race Series dates. The Half Marathon falls on September 18th, the Next day (19th) according to Higdon you should be going for the second last 20miler LSR?

    Probably wont be able for that after the half on Saturday... What should i aim for, or what are other people doing instead of the LSR?

    Extract....

    Sept 13th -> 4M
    Sept 14th -> 10M
    Sept 15th -> 7 *Hill
    Sept 16th -> 5M
    Sept 17th -> Rest
    Sept 18th DMC Half Marathon.
    Sept 19th -> 20Mile ?????

    How did you get on Wexican? Did you do a run? I wouldn't do anything this week that really pushes you. You've got the distance already. Certainly don't do anything that aggravates your ankle.

    Not long to go now!

    If you are running the half as part of your training for the full, then add an extended warm up and warm down so you hit 18 - 20 for the day.
    I wouldn't advise running 20 after the HM.

    Probably going to have to do something similar, the half in the park clashes with one of my 20-milers. :eek:

    Just keep running after the finish line? I'm sure you'll easily have another 7 miles in ya! :D
    I do remember after I finished the GIR in the park seeing others going off for more, of course I was :eek: but I can see why now.

    Ran home from work so just a little over 10k. With the heat that evening I took it pretty handy, making sure I got the red man at the lights where I could. No problem with the ankle though I was running with a pair of orthotics(a temporary measure) which I got from the physio last week, which I needed to break anyway in before Sunday.

    Plan on doing a light run tonight and tomorrow and putting the feet up till Sunday, where I've reduced my target from 1.50 to just finishing it.

    I'm on week one of the Hal Higdon Novice half marathon plan.
    Did 3 miles yesterday & 2.5 today. Going to get out tomorrow for 3 miles. Not looking forward to it to be honest, the couple of runs there were tough in most parts! At least it's cooled down a lot!

    Having real difficulty trying to stick to the HH routine, but went this evening and ran a 10 miler in about 1:47. By no means fast but happy with that so far.

    I'm in the same boat Yungwan! Picked up a sore throat at the weekend when I was away. Initially I thought it was the late nights and lack of smoking ban in german pubs! But it started moving to my chest and head. I don't want to risk aggravating a chest infection so I haven't been out for a run in a week. I'm feeling a bit better today but my chest and throat are definitely still tight. I'm thinking if I go for a walk tomorrow and maybe try a 20 min run Friday or Saturday. I'm taking loads of fluids/ garlic/ lemon and honey. Today is the first day I didn't need any painkillers for my throat but its still sore to cough.

    I feel like such a slob sitting around the whole time.

    Hopefully everything will be back to normal for both of us by the weekend. Not a great start to the Half-Marathon Plan. But I guess its better now than a week or two before perhaps :)

    I did my 3m today instead of yesterday and after not getting anything in since last thurs on account of a dog bite :(

    On thurs I was over the moon at doing 3m in 48mins.

    Tonight I did it in 40. I'm delighted with that. The main thing for me is that I can see progress!! :)
