    Quick question guys?

As you may know, I started my first week of this plan on Monday and following my run on Tuesday I have had a cold. As a result I havent done anything since my first run of three miles on Tuesday. i am beginning to feel better today, but my sinuses are infected (sorry for too much info!!lol) and I still feel a little shi*e.

Do you think I should go for a cycle this evening (even though its technically a run day) or will I leave my training altogether until tomorrow or Saturday until I am fully better and take it as just a bad start to my first week?

Im really stubborn once I start something and hate not being able to finish something I have started, so if it were up to me Id go this evening!!

    Advice appreciated!

If you're on antibiotics I'd just take it easy today and then leave it until tomorrow or Saturday. Look after yourself, if you don't let it clear properly then it will keep coming back and disrupt your training more.

If your sick...get better then get back to it!!! no point pushing it and leving yourself in a worse position

Fair play to you all for following the training programme so well. I find that I'm all over the place really. I run the nights I can (probably 4 or 5 times a week), varying distances of 3-5. I do aim to do the half marathon in Sept, so I'm going to try to do as much of the plan as I can. I did a 3m run on Tue and last night, so tonight I can't go out (no childcare), so will do stretch and strength tonight.
I'm not even sure which training plan to follow, the furthest I've ever run is 10k, so maybe I should do the training plan for the 10mile?
Anyway it's nice to log on here and see other people's training logs and experiences.
I think the races are a great motivator. I'll just keep plugging away and try to increase my distance. Not overly worried about my time.

Even if you can't follow a training plan completely and you're going out at different days and times every week, you could try to put a little structure on your runs -

    1. make one run a week your long run, building up slowly to the half-marathon distance. Take these runs slowly, and don't increase the distance you run by more than a mile or two from week to week.
    2. make one run a faster run, at or above the pace you plan to run in the race.
    3. those are your two harder runs, don't run them one day after the other.
    4. the rest of your runs should be easier, you don't have to be pushing yourself on pace or distance all the time, some runs should be just gentle recovery runs

Thanks RayCun for the reply, some nights I feel I could run for ages and other times I'm exhaused after the 3miles. My pace seems to be the same all the time on every run. I can't imagine going any faster than I'm going at the moment though. And you're right i do need to have more structure with my running. I seem to do a bit of juggling with home life and if I get a window of opportunity, the runners are on and I'm out the door.

Well done to everyone starting out on their half-marathon schedule and I hope it goes well for all of you.

I just did my first half-marathon in May and here's a couple of things I wish I knew then...
    1. LSRs are important as they give you experience at longer distances. Due to various reasons I only got up to 9 miles on my long runs and I struggled from about mile 8 - 12 on the race day both mentally and physically.
    2. Don't over-train on cross training as it can knacker you. I was too enthusiastic and really over did it on the cross trainer and weights so my legs were too tired especially on the long runs
    3. Use your rest days wisely and enjoy them
    4. Smile when you're passing a camera!!
I'm just a beginner myself and still learning so I'm reading this thread with interest for the Sept half in Dub :)

    I'm so proud of myself!!

I went to the gym today to do my 3m and after tuesday I wasn't really expecting too much from myself to be honest.

I started going and 5 mins in at 0.54kms I was starting to feel really tired,

but there was this song on that I liked so I made a deal with myself to keep going until the song was over - have to push myself a bit, you know?

Well, song finishes, I look up and I've done 6.30 mins.

Have to keep going to 10mins.

At 10 mins, I have 1km done. I push myself to do 1.5.

At 10 I pushed myself to 15, pushed myself to 20, then to 25 and then to 30 mins!!

I had ran a whole 3km without stopping, was so proud of myself! So I walked the 4th and ran the 5th km again.

I know the time is a bit crappy, and everyone is prob running the whole 3m anyway, but that is a serious achievement for me - has really spurred me on and I reckon I'll defo run the first 3 of my 4mile run on Sunday!!
    :D

I have to say that this thread is a great idea and a definate boost to morale to know there are plenty of other people like myself out there attemping our first half marathon. Thanks again to the OP.

Trying to adapt to the novice Hal Higeon half marathon but what with work and home I'm only able to get max 3 runs in a week, including one longish run with rest days (stretch, core etc) Been a bit lazy on my off days to be honest must sort those out. Managed an 8 mile this evening, second one in two weeks in quite warm weather, the first one was great a week ago but tonights one really knocked the stuffing out of me, maybe it was the heat, found myself on my ass on the driveway when I got home! I'm hoping to get myself all sorted for the 8th Aug for the Boston Scientific Half.

Best of luck to the rest of you in your training guys n girls.:)

I spent last night sitting on the couch too. Really frustrating, but I can feel a cold coming on so I'm desparately trying to keep that at bay. Annoying as it was, I figured it was better to sacrifice last night's easy run and be ready for my 16km LSR on Sunday. I might get in 20 mins on the treadmill this eve just to stretch the legs if I feel up to it.

    good luck,

i'm doing the full distance in the morning to get ready for the multi marathon on July 4.

I did 12 miles last week and felt sick for 2 hours afterwards, it was warm and only had one small drink at 9 miles.......

I find its much easier to run early on my days off Tuesdays and Sundays etc or after say 6-7pm during the rest of the week when the major heat of the day has started to dissapate. Thats if of course I can drag my lazy ass out there.

I've paid the price for running midday when its hot, so when I do I keep it to a really short one just to test myself under a bit of pressure. Pleased with myself this evening though, 10k unless runningmap.com is telling me fibs :?

Keep up the good work guys.

Case in point: Clontarf half last year, last weekend in June and it was a 11am start. Hot and thirsty work!

how long do ye walk/run between the 400m speedwork runs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭iceage

Fair point to all above. With the way the weather has been lately I'll have to consider the posibility of running long (for me) on a scorcher of a day.

I'd also like to thank the God Mr. Helly Hansen, for the under Armour shorts I bought recently....bloody marvelous kit, no chaffing or ire since I've started wearing them. Highly recommend them to any of you if you find shorts rubbing in the wrong places!!

The idea is to try take same amount of time recovery as it takes to complete your 400m. From here you can reduce the recovery as you develop

I'm so annoyed! Went out today to do my 4m, got just under 1mile done when I had to slow to a walk as there were so many people around. Cue a vicious little terrier ON A LEAD mind you who takes a swipe at the back of my leg!!

I don't know if it was claw or teeth, but he put a very small hole in my trakkies and he drew blood. Its not a deep cut, just the surface really. Friends are telling me I'm okay for a tetnis. Obviously I would rather not get one but do you think I need one? Would you I suppose? I'm not looking for medical advice. I've decided I'm not getting one, just asking if this is the decision others would take.

Walked for about another kilometer after that but the position of the wound, lol made it too hard (the back of my knee)

    Bummer!!

Week 1 of Hal Higdon half marathon plan - done! And it wasnt too bad at all, except today... 4 brutally hot miles, another lesson learned in time management!

Has anyone else been having trouble with stitches? Had trouble on Thursday from one and it got so bad today I had to stop and walk for a while. It wasnt from food, I had left 2 and half hours after eating, and I know I get plenty of water. Off to search old threads!

Hope the rest of ye managed to day without collapsing in a heap somewhere! or getting attacked by bad dogs!

Did my 16km LSR today and lived to tell the tale :)

was a bit nervous heading out as I've been fighting a cold all week and only got out for one 40 min run since last Sunday. And it seemed for a while like my worst fears were coming through - I was really, really struggling around the 7-8km mark. Then I walked for a minute around 9km while I took a gel and I seemed to get a second wind. I don't know if it was the gel kicking in (or the placebo effect) but things just got better from there and I got home really strongly, I definitely had a few more kms in me finishing.

So a good day, after a tough start. I'm fairly happy now that I should be well set for the half in 3 weeks. I'll do a tough 12 next week over some hills, an easy 8 the following week and then RACE!

To the people struggling with the heat, the most important thing is to make sure you are very, very well hydrated heading out, then you won't need as much fluid while you are out.
