    Pandorum (2009)
A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities.
Imagine an re-enacting Alien, adding some Event Horizon, and sprinkle those generic "Gollum" creatures from The Cave, The Descent, Meat Train etc etc.....actually give 'em some spears so they're, you know, tribal. Imagine Dead Space, but without everything that makes it cool....and you'll have Pandorum.

Overly reliant on 'boo!' scares, and shooting the film in the dark; this film is a waste of time. They try to reach beyond it's scope with a possible reality/madness angle, but it goes nowhere. The "Mila Jovovich" of the cast has a really awesome rack, though. Despite that, Avoid!

    This Is England (2006)
A story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight. They become his new best friends even like family. Based on experiences of director Shane Meadows.
This isn't my kind of film; but if you like that sort of thing, it's quite good. English scumbag lives in a council estate, spreading hate and violence to his family, friends and neighbours; intimidating shopkeepers with a huge knife, that kind of thing. He makes everyone's life worse. He goes to jail, and gets out, and the world around him has changed. Half of his friends see how bad he is, and stop hanging around him, but he continues in his old ways. He, along with his friends and family, teach the youngest child (the protagonist, actually) to blindly hate and become incredibly intolerant, just like them. I don't know whether to feel angry, or sad. This, along with the "geezahs" is the side to England I despise, a devastatingly accurate portrayl of scumbags performed on camera here.

    Identity (2003)
Stranded at a desolate Nevada motel during a nasty rainstorm, ten strangers become acquainted with each other when they realize that they're being killed off one by one.
Mystery thriller with John Cusack and Ray Liotta. Interesting enough, but you don't care for any of the characters, so their deaths don't feel impactful. To make the film more fun, take a shot every time the camera changes focus to someone else in the room. Must be used 50 times! Unfortunately the characters/script isn't that well-written as to support multiple viewings to glean more. Makes sense, it's alright, but I wouldn't spend money to see it.

    One Missed Call (2008)
In this remake of the Japanese horror film "Chakushin Ari" (2003), several people start receiving voice-mails from their future selves -- messages which include the date, time, and some of the details of their deaths.
90 missed minutes...of my life. Girl gets a --well-- missed call with the time and date in the future; which is when they're gonna die. The next victim(s) have to solve the mystery before it's too late. Think The Ring, but really crap. We're not fed more clues or information, we're just aimlessly walking around until it comes together. No scary imagery (but a hilarious "scary baby") and no satisfying explanation. Oddly didn't go for the swerve ending/revelation, either! Avoid.

The Strangers (2008) (with Liv Tyler, not Steve Austin!)
A young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants.
Simple premise, executed far better than I thought it would be. (If you've seen Funny Games (1997)or Ils (2006) you know what you're in for) A couple are alone in a far-away country house, get stalked by mysterious locals, with murder on the mind. Not much script or progression, but does a very good job of keeping the tension.

My only problem (besides the explanation of why they're been tortured/stalked) is that you know straight away that the couple are boned. Couple of "why didn't you do that" moments, but overall this film kept my attention until the finish. They spend a little too much time with the "ha ha! I'm here!" and not going in for the kill. Great to see Glen Howerton (Dennis from Always Sunny) getting some screen time. The masks are also pretty freaky. So if you're up for a bit of stalk-horror, give it a watch.

Last night I watched The Other (1972) a horror by Robert Mulligan.
In the summer of 1935, 9-year-old twins Niles and Holland Perry live with their family on a Connecticut farm where their loving grandmother Ada has taught them something called "the game." A number of accidents begin happening, and it seems to Niles that Holland is responsible. It is Ada who begins to see the truth, and she is the only one who can stop this macabre game of murder.
I think the last time I saw it was in the 80's and there were a few scenes that had stuck in my mind to this day so while I wasnt too sure of how the movie would unfold there were bits I was expecting; that and the back of the DVD actually gave a lot of it away so if you ever do decide to watch it dont read the back - seriously. Its a good movie though with plenty of twists and turns that can keep you guessing.

    'Solomon Kane'

16th Century mumbojumbo with Robert E. Howard's lesser known creation, the titular Solomon Kane (complete with a regional accent), who's tasked with battling some evil demon creatures from somewhere or other that are attacking England. Overall an enjoyable film that's shot in a very gloomy manner. Everything looks gray, wet and nasty and there's little happy clappy moments in it. There are some questionable cuts in the running time however and some odd disjointed moments that give the impression that it was cut down from a longer print (as all films are of course). But, the dodgy editing doesn't really interfere too much. Feels like a computer game at times though.

    'A Christmas Carol'

Yet another attempt to film Charles Dicken's excellent cautionary tale of uber miser Ebenezer Scrooge. This time it's been given the Robert Zemeckis treatment and shot in motion capture animation, a la 'Beowulf' from a few years ago. Of course, it's going to be truly difficult to beat the top of the game which is 1951's brilliant effort 'Scrooge', starring the great Alistair Sim; which remains the bench mark. This time around, scrooge is played (or voiced) by Jim Carrey who does an excellent job. Although, you can tell quite easily that he's watched Sim's effort and has copied his voice and mannerisms to a large degree. Also on offer is Gary Oldman as Bob Cratchit and Bob Hoskins as Fezziwig, scrooge's old employer. Most of the cast do the voices of multiple characters, including a somewhat dodgy Oirish accent from Carrey as the ghost of Christmas past. Victorian London is also recreated very well and the darker moments come off despite it being a "kids" film. Here and there, the animation slips a bit and it's easy to tell when something's been motion captured and when it's been animated with the human actors involved. But, it doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment.

I thought the film was quite good, although a lot of reviewers seem to have been put off by it. I have to say, I am unsure why. But I do have a fondness for the original story, so perhaps I am biased. But, some reviewers have mentioned that it didn't add anything new to Dicken's classic, which I believe is missing the point. Recommended overall, but if you haven't seen the 1951 version with Alastair Sim, then do yourself a favor and do so.

    'Tony'

Effective low budget British film about a nerdy, loner serial killer in London; who, when he isn't watching 80's actions flicks is killing and cutting up various people. It plays out against the background of a missing child on a rough council estate, but there's little in the way of a true narrative. All in all though, it's good for a film of it's type and does what it does well. Peter Ferdinando is very good in the title role.

    'Charlie Wilson's War'

Entertaining, but with grotesque characters, 'Charlie Wilson's War' tells the story of the Texan congressman of the same name who led the drive to supply the Afghan Mujahideen with arms in their fight against the Soviets in the 1980's. Dubbed "Operation Cyclone", the US covert shipment of arms increased steadily from 5 million dollars to half a billion until the Soviets finally withdrew in 1988. The folly of such action is hinted at, but not truly revealed in the story and there are no overt messages about the creation of the Taliban, Al Qaeda and the attack of September 11th, which were arguably all born out of US interference in the area. However, all of those occurrences hang over the film with a long shadow. Tom Hanks does a credible job as Wilson and Julia Roberts is on board as Joanne Herring, the right wing political activist who helped Wilson in his endeavor. Also involved is the excellent Philip Seymour Hoffman as CIA operator Gust Avrakotos, who adds yet another scene stealing performance to his career.

    [Rec] 2

Watched the first film and really enjoyed it...it had a very claustrophobic feeling knowing that they couldn't leave the building and added to the tension. The sequel begins pretty much straight after the first one ends and introduces new characters (plus one or two ones from the first film). Not much character development but the scares and gore come pretty regular. The whole virus story is explained to a satisfactory level and you also see the story from different viewpoints which is really cool...I won't give away the ending but its common knowledge that [Rec] 3 was confirmed for 2011.

Hopefully Hollywood will just leave this possible franchise alone and leave these Spanish filmmakers alone to let them do their thing.

Frost / Nixon - very enjoyable.

Was made all the better by the Nixon documentary that was on BBC 4 last night. Filled all the gaps / poilitical references I was not 100% clear on.

Martin Sheen is excellent in this. I would love to see him in the Hobbit as Bilbo now.

    Proof of life.

Was on BBC1 last night after the footie had ended, was all set for bed but decided to watch 5 minutes of it to see if it was any use. And it was. I thought it was pretty decent. I like Russell crowe and I think he gave another solid performance. Although I have to say that David Caruso stole the show.
That scene at the end where his buddie got shot and he's screaming at him in the chopper and the guy just calls him an asshole, brilliant.
All in all a pleasant surprise.a

    Exam

Interesting film about numerous candidates all in one room taking a final exam to decide which of them gets the one job going with an amazing but secretive company. They each have an exam paper and a pencil and are given three rules which, if broken, disqualify you. 1) Not to communicate with the invigilator or the armed guard at the door. 2) Not to spoil the paper either intentionally or by accident and 3) not to choose to leave the room. They have 80 minutes to answer one question. The twist is finding out what the question is.

I really enjoyed this film, kind of like Cube but without most of the gore. As far as I can tell the premise has been done before by a Spanish film (which some are saying is vastly superiour but I've yet to see it). At the same time I feel the movie could have been so much more. I won't describe any of what happens in the movie as it would ruin it but it's worth a watch if there's nothing else on.

    Hot Tub Time Machine

Back to the Future - in a hot tub!

Fairly light movie about a group of middle aged men who happen to find a hot tub that transports them back 20 years. It's a comedy but isn't terribly funny. It has a pretty great 80's soundtrack and refreshingly lampoons both time travel etiquette and 80's movies that are based on silly plots! The highlight is one character saying the title of the movie in one line of dialogue and then staring directly at the camera for a few seconds. :D

Instantly forgettable but not the worst way to spend 90 minutes.

    Brooklyn's Finest

Ensemble piece about three New York Cops, one a disillusioned beat cop days from retirement, one a tough drug squad cop with money problems and the last a cop on a longterm undercover assignment.

I'm not sure what to make of this movie. I did enjoy it but came out of the cinema wondering what the point of it was. Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle's acting is superb and probably worth watching the movie for alone. Richard Gere does leave the side down, though, with some poor acting. The three separate stories are pretty engaging but I can't help but feel they were a bit forced towards the end.

It was nice to see an 18-rated movie in the cinema though with some violence, bad language and nudity. None of it is gratuitous but instead adds to the realism of each cop's story.

    Worth a watch I feel.

    'The Omen'

Almost a shot for shot remake of the 1976 classic about the rise of the anti-Christ, which left me wondering why bother? Most remakes can't live up to the originals, but this 2006 effort is particularly curious. Although it's not completely without merit, it's pointlessness is hard to leave alone and the characters simply cannot hold a candle to the stars of the original. Liev Schreiber, Julia Stiles, David Thewlis and Mia Farrow are ok in their roles, but pale in comparison to Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner and (especially) Billie Whitelaw. Also sorely lacking is the score, but it would have been next to impossible to better Jerry Goldsmith's black mass from the original.

Funny but true! That movie was only remade to release on the date 060606. Even the trailors they showed that year had "The omen out 666"

Was bored and knocking around Sky Player last night and for some reason settled on 'Wall Street' which ive always meant to watch. Oliver Stone is so hit and miss i wasnt expecting a huge amount but i thought it was excellent, some brilliant performances(notably of course Michael Douglas but also Martin Sheen) and a good story that seems even more relevant now.

    Electroma

Visually stunning film directed by Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. No spoken dialogue just music as two Robots go on a journey to be Human. Excellent.
