Bonzai tree dying :(

    my bonsai tree looks dead, it lost most of its leaves so i trimmed it back to just branches. no new leaves or shoots are growing expect down at the bottom nearly from the roots. what should i do to bring it back to life near the top. i scraped the bark slightly like i heard to do and it was still a bit green under . is there hope . its a "tree of a thousand stars" if that helps.
