Saw this on a ditch ouside Fethard. The leaves underneath were dying. Its a cobweb of some sort but what made it?? anyone guess??

According to Mothman on the Nature and Birdwatching forum, it is the web of the Orchard Ermine Moth. Its caterpillars are eating all the leaves. It won't kill the plant, just damage it a bit.

I'm from Limerick but have seen this at the weekend down in Miltown Malbay in West Clare. I looked closely and could see the caterpillars with eggs (black dots suspended in the caterpillars silk).

Remaining question:
Why is it so prevalent now? Have weather conditions of late been particularly good for these creatures or something?
