I Am Vertical

But I would rather be horizontal.
I am not a tree with my root in the soil
Sucking up minerals and motherly love
So that each March I may gleam into leaf,
Nor am I the beauty of a garden bed
Attracting my share of Ahs and spectacularly painted,
Unknowing I must soon unpetal.
Compared with me, a tree is immortal
And a flower-head not tall, but more startling,
And I want the one's longevity and the other's daring.
Tonight, in the infinitesimal light of the stars,
The trees and the flowers have been strewing their cool odors.
I walk among them, but none of them are noticing.
Sometimes I think that when I am sleeping
I must most perfectly resemble them --
Thoughts gone dim.
It is more natural to me, lying down.
Then the sky and I are in open conversation,
And I shall be useful when I lie down finally:
Then the trees may touch me for once, and the flowers have time for me.

Are those the faces of love, those pale irretrevables?
Is it for such I agitate my heart?
I am incapable of more knowledge.
What is this, this face
So murderous in its strangle of branches?--
Its snaky acids kiss.
It petrifies the will. These are the isolate, slow faults

Knocking on the moonlit door;
And his horse in the silence champed the grasses

But only a host of phantom listeners
That dwelt in the lone house then
Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight
To that voice from the world of men:
Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair,
That goes down to the empty hall,
Hearkening in an air stirred and shaken
By the lonely Traveller's call.
And he felt in his heart their strangeness,
Their stillness answering his cry,
While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf,
'Neath the starred and leafy sky;
For he suddenly smote on the door, even
Louder, and lifted his head:-
'Tell them I came, and no one answered,
That I kept my word,' he said.
Never the least stir made the listeners,
Though every word he spake
Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house
From the one man left awake:
Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup,
And the sound of iron on stone,
And how the silence surged softly backward,
When the plunging hoofs were gone.

MY favourite painting is "Flaming June" by Lord Frederic Leighton. I saw it last year in the Prado in Madrid, it's much more spectacular in real life
and while I'm at it, one of the most beautiful poems I know (my knowledge of poetry is limited to my LC course and 16th cent spanish poetry, which sucks):

This is just a perfect song.
I'll have to admit,the intro to that song nearly brought me to tears:o
Before this I only knew it as "that song on some bbc ads" but when you listen to it properly..I love it!
Walking home on the back lanes when the suns out a bit and I can see all the lakes..and see the cars from the main road going by but not hearing a sound,makes me so relaxed:)0 -

Really!? Excellent! I found it saved on my laptop yesterday and nearly split myself laughing. When it's a small thumbnail, the top hat is a lot more subtle, and therefore more hilarious when you see it.
