got one in Greystones last night - €40 on the price tag, but scanned as €13. There were a few left, though the checkout guy legged it up to get one when he saw the price. Its impressively tiny too.

Definitely a mis-price though, the identical 4GB model was marked as €17. Couldn't see the 2xSD Card offer there.

Got one in Dundrum last night, plugged it in and it's showing up 15GB free of 15GB?

yeap, should show as about 15.1 free, you lose a bit to the format...

It all depends on how you define a Gigabyte:
Although most manufacturers of hard disk drives and flash-memory disk devices define 1 gigabyte as 1000000000bytes, software like Microsoft Windows calculates size in gigabytes by dividing the total capacity in bytes by 1073741824, while still reporting the result with the symbol "GB".
I don't know why there isn't a standard, probably to do with marketing when selling hard drives etc.

Be wary of these guys and gals. Bought one today and loaded some stuff on it and it stopped loading after a while and would not delete nor add anything after that. It says the disc is write=protected and I can do nothing with it. No way to remove the write-protection.

the standard in the computer industry was 1024=1K ,
    720K floppies were 720 x 1024
that bit about 1 billion = 1G only came later on with the marketing droids
you loose 2.4% with K, twice that with M and 7.3% with G
1 terrabyte = 1,099,511,627,776 so you are loosing 10% of the capacity

Windows can be a pain as different parts of it prefer to show Bytes, K,M,G or sector units

Also there is an overhead as you have to store directories and lists of files, there is a trade off between the ability to store lots of small files using large indexes and finding files quickly with a small index. A small index means more space free , but larger allocation units means more space is wasted if you have many small files. These trade offs aren't as noticable with NTFS or EXT file systems. With NTFS you can define the size of the MST area which stores small files when you format the drive.

    /stiff gutted I missed this offer :(

Unless the drive is FAT32, permissions will apply until you remove them or are using the device as the same user on the same machine

in linux use sudo chmod to change permissions
in windows use runas /user:administrator cacls to change permissions

Fe*k it, didn't see this thread at all, normally I have a look at the computer stuff when I'm in there (not in there very often!) and I didn't last night

Erm... I don't like leaving empty handed, so as there was no HP ones, I got a 16GB SanDisk USB flash drive for €14.98 in Tescos in Maynooth. Not bad. There was another 8 there, and this was not a "special price", but I'd say they're in all the places.

Interesting enough, the price was only put on them once they realised all the 16GB HP ones were gone...

    Try the following:

Panasonic SDFormatter for SD cards and USB. It works well for anything I've thrown at it. Full Erase and Format Size Adjustment. It'll erase anything plugged into a USB port. Not just Panasonic products. I've 'revived' a few items over the years with it.

    None in Rathfarnham
    None in Nutgrove but
8 sorry 6 16gb now left in Tesco Dundrum at 7pm tonight.

When you get there, if there's none left, have a look behind the other boxes as I left 2 behind the boxes for boards members to find ;)

Cheers for that, picked up one of the hidden ones this morning:):)

None left in Tesco's Wilton. Asked the guy working in hardware if there was any, and he said he had no clue what I was talking about..

Apologies, somewhat off-topic, but someone might be curious.

I had an idea to shove one of these inside something else, they're very small.

I'm still toying with putting the chip and usb contact 'tray' inside a USB end plug case from a discarded cable. It fits perfectly.

    ---

End with key chain loop can be pushed out with blunt object, then the thumb drive can be pushed and slipped out the rear of the casing.

Pictures below of non-destructive dissasembly. A 2 cent coin for comparison.

    Hello Amalgam.
I did all you suggested, downloaded the program. Started it up and clicked format and it says "The Memory Card is write-protected. Please release the write protect switch."
Now there is no slidey switch or anything else on the card as you can see from the other posters pictures.
    Regards.
    Tom.

Still some left Arthurs Quay, Limerick.

Are you sure? I was down there Wednesday at 3:00 and there was none there.
Just back from there now, and there's still none there.

I assume they should be beside the 2Gb and 4Gb ones near the mobile phones.?
