Mono Drum overhead recording

i would suggest 1 to 2 feet in front of the kit at about 6 feet to 7 feet high , pointing at the drummers kick leg knee

or try it lower pointing at the drummers face

or

same scenario behind the drummer pointing at same spot

the two spots give you less, or more tom attack and high hat

if this is to be the main drum sound - you better get a good drummer - they will need to self mix well.

Big fan of the Mono Overhead.

3 drumsticks height over the snare over the centre of the kit. I also like to spot mic the ride and hi-hat to give a bit of width and focus to those two cymbals.

mono overhead can sound great. Really focused and punchy.

The best spot depends on the room and the drummer. As a starting point I would put it over the kit almost straight about the kick pedal and then move it around until it has the right blend of all the elements. Move it higher and lower until you get the right balance of presence and ambiance. I usually find a bit less than one meter over the drummers head is a good starting point.
