Your UPC box records the encrypted signal and that is what is stored on the drive.

The method of Encryption is Nagravision 3 a very secure system.
When you go to play a recording it is run through the built in decoder.

That was a long winded way of saying you have no chance of doing that.

However you can get a tv card for your pc and play the content and then record it onto your pc or a DVD recorder.

Sky Plus works is much the same way it records all content to the drive in NDS Videoguard.

Nargravision 3 or NDS Videoguard files would just be gibberish on your pc drive.

You can do it by connecting a DVD recorder or a video recorder to the other SCART connector on the UPC box, the only problem is you have to play it in real time to record it, so for example a two hour movie will take two hours to record.

I have a player/recorder called a Neuros OSD which will record (MP4) onto an external hard disk or USB key - it takes approx 1GB per hour, the drawback again being you have to play it in real time. There are many other similar devices around.

If I want to backup something I usually do it overnight or during the daytime when the TV isn't in use. Play it on the UPC recorder, start the other recorder then turn off the TV. You can also burn the recordings to a DVD disk that will play on a standard DVD player.

So far it's the only way I've found to backup recordings I want to keep.

What do you do if the box has only one scart box?

you plug the box into the dvd recorders input scart (not the one that goes into the tv)

and connect the dvd recorder to the tv

go the the tv av channel.

go to the chanel the upc box is on in the dvd (usually av).

play the recording on the upc box.

    press record on the dvd.

I have tried it but seem to keep getting the TV station, poorly recorded!

I have a combo VCR and DVD player-Toshiba.

What am I doing wrong or should I just go and get myself a DVD recorder?

    Regards to all!
