I'll be studying arts in maynooth in 2010! Cant wait!

Although I am quite frightened about my financial situation. I'm currently working full time at the moment but will be leaving in September. Im entitled to the maintanance grant but Im sure that wont be enough to get me through the year. Since the Republic is in dire straits Im worried about been able to find a part time job to get me through the year?

Is anyone else in the same boat and may have some advise?

Advice on not spending much... if you're going to be having money troubles...
    • Don't drink.
    • Don't smoke.
    • Don't buy coffee or sandwiches on campus i.e. bring your own lunch.
    • Don't buy brand new books if you can get them in the library or secondhand from Amazon or other students.
    • If you really need to buy the book new check online places like the Bookdepository as they don't charge post and packaging and are generally at least a fiver cheaper than the chronically overpriced college bookshop, the price difference is often a tenner or more for the larger textbooks.
    • Do your photocopying in the student's union as it's cheaper than the library.
    • Get your refill pads and highlighters from the Academic Advisory office as they give them out for free.
    • For pens you can get giant boxes of 50 bics for under a tenner in Tescos last I checked.
    • For birthdays and Christmas etc. I always ask for Irish Book Tokens as you can use them in the previously mentioned chronically overpriced bookshop.
    • If, like me, you absolutely must have crisps, get large 6 or 12 packs from the supermarket, don't buy them separately in the centra or whatever. Same for chewing gum, Polo mints etc. etc. etc.
I don't know. There are a great many ways you can avoid spending much money. You can make it work on surprisingly little, still leaving yourself enough to indulge once in a while. But it might not be much fun. Depends on how much you love the subjects you pick, that can take some of the sting out of living very cheaply.

I'm sure others will have more/better suggestions. I know nothing about the part time work situation in Maynooth, since I commute my face off, which incidentally is cheaper than staying on or near campus but can make you very tired and restricts the extracurricular activities you can take part in.

I hope you enjoy your course as much as I do mine... going to Maynooth was genuinely the best choice I've ever made.

Yeah I am also starting in September. Have to make a final decision between Arts or the Anthropolgy course. But definitely starting in September and can't wait. Luckily though I qualify for BTEA.

Just got a letter of acceptence from the anthropology department on friday, so I will be starting as a mature student in september. Im eligable for btea, have to pay rent, maintenance for my two boys, and will cost about 70 per week on diesel but Im so looking foward to it, Im trying not to think about the finance too much. It will be hard but worth it in the end.

My advice to is to avoid a guy called Rob Munnelly at all times. He's really hairy and scary and mean so if you see him, run!

Now for some real advice: Obviously, look for a part-time job to tie you over. If you're living here, look for somewhere cheap. I know that sounds super obvious but campus is so dear. One of my friends was paying 60e/week this year compared to my 80e and that was for a single room in Moyglare Abbey! If you don't live in a student house, rent can be a lot cheaper! Aldi is just across the road from the college and you would not believe all the stuff you can buy for twenty euro, it's just phenomenal. Use webtext as much as you can, 300 texts a month for free is pretty decent. If you're really hard up on funds, the student services centre can lend you some money and that can be up on a grand. I don't even think you actually have to pay it back, that's what i heard anyway...always budget for the week and shop in bulk. Like was mentioned before, it's way cheaper to bring a lunch than buying on campus (I swear a part of me dies everytime I buy a sandwich in O'Brien's).

That's pretty much all I can think of, hope it helps :)

I think that if in the first few weeks you get your budget sorted and balance between college and messing about the place you will have a brilliant time!!
I'm a local and heading into second year arts in September...hopefully pure psychology but english and geography if not...
Money is obviously the hardest aspect, but there is very little going in the town itself. I've been applying for jobs around the town for two years now! I got into Marks and Spencers christmas two years ago and hopefully will be getting a permanent contract, but I'm a rare lucky one!!!

You will have such a good time here...it's just brilliant!!!!

    Looks on the cards!

As for advice.....Inkjet world for all your printing and photocopying needs.

Got my final portfolio printed and bound TWICE (90 pages in total) for €13!

For binding you can't beat Inkjet alright, but the SU does the cheapest printing and photocopying by a long-shot.

Hi I am starting multimedia in September as a mature student and am really looking forward to it. I believe lectures start on the 20th. There is something about orientation the week before and 2 mature student days on the 6th and 7th. Does anyone know if these dates before the 20th are either compulsory or useful? All advice appreciated.

Go to them. Everything. Purely for the opportunity to meet people. I went to orientation and on that day, I met my future best friend.

3rd year English student here :)

And to the people asking are the mature student orientation days compulsory, I'm pretty certain that they are. The ones for the access office/disability office are anyway. They're great in that you get an introduction to the college with a much smaller amount of people. And also the fact that you actually end up knowing where Humanity House is when it comes to registration :D

3rd year English student here :)

Greetings, see you in September! I'll look out for someone who looks like their name might be Your Text Here. I imagine it's something like this . Correct me if I'm wrong...

I'm getting pretty pumped for second year, if all goes to plan. When do people usually start worrying about finding accommodation? I've been working on raising the funds all summer, don't have any houses in sight/mind yet though...

2nd Arts, music and mathematical physics, btw :)
