What does everyone think of the e-mail that was sent out by the college this morning about the Facebook texts?
Great idea, but did it really warrant its own all-student e-mail?

For those of you who haven't seen it yet:

    Dear All,

We have licensed a technology developed in NUIM to a local Irish company which allows for Facebook users to receive free texts directly from their Facebook site. It uses your free web texts to allow people to text you from your facebook page. Have a look at and feel free to install it.

Well pretty crazy sending it out during exam time, but, it was developed in Maynooth so I'm guessing that they want some people from NUIM to use it and test it out and maybe give some feedback.
I'm unsure as to whether it warrants its own discussion thread. ;)

Well, when I saw the subject line 'Facebook and NUIM' I was really hoping they were going to ban it in PACRs and the library. I was greatly disappointed. But anyway.

I really don't see why not. I'd prefer more communication from the university, doesn't matter to me whether it's strictly relevant to me personally.

Yeah, I agree about that, the more they chat to us the better.

Expect more emails like this. All student bulletins to inform us of 6 cans for 7 euro deals in Dunnes and what not :D

TBH I don't think it does, but I didn't know where to stick it :)

I had hoped it would be an email banning FB from the PACR and the library too! I have my own laptop and I usually use my boyfriend's printer for assignments and the like, but last week my laptop decided to drop into a coma so while it was getting fixed I needed to get two essays done and printed. It was an absolute nightmare! I never realised how bad FB actually was in both places, but it was impossible to get a free computer!

You should make a T-shirt saying 'I need to do an essay, if you're using Facebook on an academic computer I will kill you!'

Otherwise get a Facebook beating stick! and repeatedly hit their keyboard buttons until they feck off.
    :D

    Extreme(exam) times demand extreme measures!

    Bahhhhhhahahaha

I think it's a pretty kewl app, didn't work when I tried to text myself though :(

Nice to see that some guys in the college coming up with ideas for apps and I'm glad if me using it makes people more aware that it exists!

I don't think facebook will ever get banned for the simple fact that the SU and many clubs and soc's make use of it as a communication tool.
Also I'd say most lecturers and people working in the college use it too, so it's not so much like bebo. Where bebo was unknown and greatly seen as a waste of time. Now social networking is a lot more an acceptable thing to do, If you know what I mean?

Nah, to be honest it used to bother me at the start of the year, but now I'm happy to get the emails. They're usually really relevant and sure if they don't concern me in particular they're easily deleted.

What *really* bothered me was that at the start of the year, someone running for an election position lifted my email address off a department email and emailed me, crapping on about how I should vote for them in the First Year elections. I don't know, it just struck a cord that they would take my personal address, which I hadn't given to them, and then spam me with their election crap! (I know my department should use BCC :) ) The best bit of it was was that they didn't even know enough about the election to know that only first years could vote, so there wasn't any point in spamming the rest of the 2nd, 3rd yrs and the postgrads.

It REALLY bothered a lot of our year and I know the majority were very close to emailing the department and the election committee.

So after that, some all college emails which actually concern me aren't that bad :)

Works fine for me but I really can't see any of my friends using it. If someone is online and wants to text me webtext is just as handy.

Argh I can't get mine to work at all! It keeps telling me that my own number is false... Last time I checked it was real?
