The green is the ash between 20,000 ft and 35,000ft i.e. FL200 to Fl350.

The blus is where the ash exceeds engine manufacturer ash limitations

According to this, the volcano is 'bulging slightly'. Doesn't sound the best. When are the southwesterlies going to return?
Seems the Atlantic has shut down at the moment....

Thought I was going to have no problem with flights tomorrow morning, flying out of Belfast into Palma, Majorca.. BUT after looking at the charts on the thread here, it looks as though Majorca is under threat tomorrow of ash:(.. I am supposed to land there at 1320, should I be worried?

Sounds really nasty, but I know nothing about these things. Is that bad? Is there a place on the web where people know this sort of stuff (lava-ologists / scary-mountain-ologists or volcanologists even) get together and talk about this sort of stuff? It would be interesting to listen to what they have to say.

I'm no expert, but Mount St. Helens comes to mind. That was very bad. Bulged for a while - then obliterated itself....:eek:

Bulging or inflation is a type of ground deformation that usually indicates there will be a new eruption event. It's possible that new magma has risen up from deep below and is moving to the surface, pushing the volcano slightly outwards.

The latest ash forecast. Irish airspace still looking in the clear as the ash cloud stays out to our west spanning right across the Atlantic Ocean from Greenland to Spain.

Clear shot of the large plume right now. Lucky for us this is heading straight down over the Atlantic and not towards Europe at the moment.

what going on with the world this year?? earthquakes, floods, a deep freeze for 2 month solid. another semi freeze in may. winds that are consistantly blowing down from the north instead of thier usually easterlies. north atlantic jet streams seems to have gone on strike. and now a volcano spewing out ash effecting air planes. it's madness

Ash causes further flight disruption

Aer Lingus and Ryanair have announced flight cancellations to certain airports in Spain and Portugal, because of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland.

The announcements from Aer Lingus and Ryanair came last night, as the Irish Aviation Authority said that it expected Irish airports to operate normally until 1pm.

In a statement this morning, the Irish Aviation Authority said that Irish airspace is currently clear of ash.

However, they added that 'the ash cloud situated over the North Atlantic is drifting in over the Iberian Peninsula, and other parts of southern Europe, with a consequential risk to flight in those areas.'

'Irish Airports are expected to be open until at least midnight tonight.

'However, North Atlantic flights and flights to / from Southern Europe may be impacted over the weekend.'

Aer Lingus has cancelled some transatlantic flights, as well as some between Dublin and the Spanish airports of Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela.

Ryanair cancelled flights to and from the northern Spanish airports of Santander, Santiago, Valladolid and Zaragoza, as well as Porto in Portugal, between six o'clock in the morning and midnight (Sat.)

Ryanair also said there is a possibility that airspace over Madrid, Barcelona Girona and Reus may be affected by closures or disruption from 12pm.

Aer Arann said there were no planned cancellations of its flights.

Passengers are advised to check airlines' websites for details.

Plume looks slightly lower than yesterday evening but is still very large.
