Catalytic converter is broken.

Hey all,

As above, my catalytic converter is gone on my car which is a Volvo C70 2.4. I am having terrible trouble locating someone who can fix it as it is a rare-ish type car. The turbo is bolted to the side of the cat which makes things that much more complicated. It is basically making this rattling noise which I have been told would suggest the filter is broken.

I have been quoted €750 to get it fixed but I would live with the noise for that money.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to reduce the noise or where I can get it fixed without getting lashed price wise?

There are a few classic ways to get rid of the noise, such as opening it up and removing the filling or put spikes/wire through it to stabilise the filling but really you need to consider a new cat.
See if you can find a spurious one on ebay and fit yourself?
A new one seems to go for 250-400 euro but you'll need it at NCT anyway, so it's a pay now or later scenario.

Thanks for the reply. i wouldn't consider my self savvy when it comes to cars. So I wouldn't have a clue how to go about removing the piece from the cat. This is actually my first car.

Is it a difficult job, would I need to be ina a pit in order to remove it or could I just get under there?

I replaced cat on a S40, was easy job. Mind, that was non-turbo.

You can do it on jacks but it's easier to either get a mechanic with a lift to do it for you once you have the part, give him 30 for labour.

You need to find the part number for the converter to find the right part/price.
Spend some time googling around and you'll find it.
