Pictureland - Like it, but the main vox do seem a bit loud... the only other comment I have it that I'm not exactly sure about the leady guitar... seems a bit distracting and unnecessary...

    maybe some horns?

You should lift the vocals above the rest of the mix.

The mix is fine - but the vocals should sit just a little bit over everything else

And you could lose that hard panned "lead" guitar from the first part of the track. Actually lose it completely - it eats into the vocal and ruins the flow of the track. It sounds horrible on headphones.

She's got a really nice voice.

But something to remember - when it's just her voice and the synth strings, it's all there is, and you should mix different sections differently.

I'm just listening to it again - please get rid of that **** guitar cutting in on the vocals - it's horrible and it's a **** guitar line. - it's wrecking the track - you should be arrested if you don't take it out. Seriously, it's ****ing up the whole track - and fix the strings fluff at the end - I can hear it

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,449 ✭✭✭krd

Actually the fluff on the strings at the end is really bad - you should just use single string notes not chords.

    I love her voice though.

Fantastic stuff again. I agree with the other lads that the lead guitar could be less prominent in pictureland.

DaDumTish – yip, you’re right - the snare in Once is too loud. I’ll take it down a notch. I’m a big Police fan so I really like that snare sound (horses for courses I suppose). Re the fills… my limitations as a drummer are exposed!

Most of the comments on Pictureland seem to be very consistent – tone down / smooth out the vox. Also, tone down that lead guitar. Agreed on both counts, so I’ll make those changes too.

I’ll try to post up another couple of tracks later today (including an up-tempo one for Rock ;) ). Would really appreciate similar kind of feedback on those too!

krd... can you explain that "fluff " on the strings?... I'm not sure what you mean, thx

Hi folks… here’s another 2 of our tunes. I posted versions of these songs last year, but they’ve since been re-recorded/re-arranged. Again, I’d appreciate feedback on the songs/mixes. Thx

    Stay

    Try

Just getting around to chipping in on these.
First thoughts: lead line in Pictureland should come down, drums could come up. I'd go out with guitar and vocals instead of the string/pad and vocal, the strings sound fake, and it takes away from the ending of the song.

Once, I'd speed it up significantly, sounds like it's around the 80bpm mark? I'd bring it up to closer to 100, maybe 110. It's dragging. Snare isn't too loud I think...it's a bit too thin and sharp to be at that level though. It's poking out. Some timing issues around half way through with the lead guitar. Great potential in this song...

    Hey Yoda,
Had a quick listen to both songs and liked them.
As an overall comment on the two, it struck me that
they both started off and finished in the same vein,
that's not really a criticism more of an observation.
I'm sure you know by now the vocals are a bit too loud
and my only other comment is that I thought the distorted
guitar didn't really add to the feeling of the songs, for me
with a light mellow sound such as yours and a great lead
vocal, I'd go with a gentle chorus/delay effect on the guitar.
    Just my tuppence worth.
By the way you can never get too 'Police(y)' for me...
    Cheers
    J

Any thoughts on these 2?... I got some great constructive feedback about the other 2 songs I posted, so would really like to get some on these ones too... thx!

Try is top class, very well done on that one. The only thing I don't like about it is the bloody clicky thing in my left ear.

It's like I'm listening to a great band on stage ahead of me and somebody is standing next to me and they are clicking their fingers right next to my ear:D
    This is a great song.

The first one I kind of liked but the drums sound a bit funny to me. The toms especially sound very high pitched or something. They don't seem to suit the song. I'm not sure if that makes sense.

Are you using a DAW for these recordings?

Thx for the comments. I might tone down that loop to reduce the annoyance factor. Hadn't noticed those toms were tuned so high but you have a point there too. I'm using Pro Tools LE.
    Cheers for that

Nice stuff, I'd love to see ye play someplace. In Stay the bass is confusing, sounds like theres some sub-bass with the bass drum, some sawtooth stuff, and with the hits at the start of every bar masking it its loosing shape. Not everyone is going to listen to that as much as me though :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,460 ✭✭✭ZV Yoda

Cheers for all those comments folks… worked on both mixes last night … took down the snare in Once & toned down the guitar/levelled the vox on Pictureland. Here’s how they sound now.
    Pictureland
    Once

Jabel - thx for that. The distorted guitars are toned down now & gives a softer vibe to Pictureland...

Fitz - that's an interesting point. We've tried Once at quite a few different speeds, but it didn't really gel when it was faster (used to be fairly grungy too). When we slowed it down, the singer just clicked on the vocal straight away & that set the tone for the more laid back approach to the music/loops. It's prob the type of song that would need to be played a bit faster live though. I can hear that timing issue too... not sure if that can be fixed in PT, but if not, it'll have to become a feature ;)... we're trying to finish off another 4 or 5 other tracks at the minute

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,460 ✭✭✭ZV Yoda

Thx Eoin... yeah, Stay was our first venture into music that was mainly synth based. I think it suffers from not having a proper bass guitar line in there, so we’re probably going to write one for that – it needs something to drive it along… the saw-tooth & arpeggio bass lines synths lack real punch.

Any other thoughts from anybody else?...I’m thick skinned, so all feedback good & bad is equally appreciated

    RE: Try

lose the last oooh that goes over the first verse line... of fade it out...

I'm not sure about the backing vox... they're nice, but also a bit distracting, to me obv.

I wish the bass had a bit more presence in the mix...

the left ear ticky thing is pretty aggressive...

all of that said, I like it!

I wouldn't usually do something as shameless as this but hey, its 3 am.

Basically I've recorded a couple of songs, just me and the built in mic on my laptop, and I'd appreciate it if you got the chance to listen to them. This is a real departure from anything I've done before and, as such, makes me very nervous to be putting them anywhere other people can hear. I'd really like to get some total outsider opinions because I don't even know what I think of them, never mind if they're any good or not. This is the first time I've done this and I hope I've given enough opinions on stuff around here over the last while to warrant a few hard nosed criticisms in return!

Anyway, its eleven minutes of your time and its free, what have you got to lose? You can stream it or download it in the format of your choice.

    The Skinny White Ep

To anyone who listens, thanks a million, its truly appreciated.

This is also supposed to be the beginning of a new label, hopefully dealing in the more abstract styles of hip-hop, ambient music, field recordings, folk and noise. Its a whole different subject but again, any advice would be appreciated. And anyone who is interested in that kind of stuff, I'd love to hear from you.

    Thanks again,

    Ian

it's objective but I'd prefer to hear these as instrumentals. I listen to mostly instrumental stuff these days and liked the music and would have been happy to have it continue, without the voice. All positive cos that's what I meant.

For sure, I'm very interested in the ambient field recordings stuff, so there you go now :)

Suppose it's about time I threw some of my stuff up here. I hadn't for ages because I still don't really know if mash-ups are considered real music...but anyway.

Basically, one of the things I do is a thing called Collidoscope, which is me DJing with a VJing, and we play mashups, and lots of funny samples and stuff. Like a cross between 2manyDJs and Girltalk. Or something. I used to do the mashups live, on different decks, but recently I've started making them on Ableton, because it makes a lot of things possible. I'm still learning about Ableton, and don't know much past cutting up samples and warping them, so there's no effects or panning or anything in these tracks, so that's basically what I'm looking for advice on.

    Shaggy - It Wasn't Me / Jason Mraz - I'm Yours / Jay-Z Empire State of Mind

    (One I just finished today)
    M.I.A - Bucky Done Gun / New Order - Blue Monday / Dizzee Rascal - Pussy'ole (Oldskool)

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic / Alison Krauss - I'll Fly Away (From the O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack)

Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat / The Intro Theme from Babar

Cheers to anyone who listens, and I'd love advice on either effects to throw in, panning, compression, or arrangement, or anything really.

Hey guys, I'm looking for tips on how I can improve a mix I've been working on.
    Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, anychance you could feedback on this?
    http://soundcloud.com/the-riot-tapes/nibw-proof-of-concept-mix

I added guitars on the chorus and I like them (they're pretty quickly done), but don't know how others would react?

    Do they ruin the tune?

Do they make the tune a lot better?

    Are they not even noticable?

    You get the idea?

Any opinions would be very welcome!

    Thanks!

    well lad,
not my scene anymore but used to do my fair part of shreddin' back in the day! so what first struck me:
sounds good but raise the vocal level, drums sound quite artificial (is it a plugin?) and very low or lack of bass!

you have a good thing going though! hope i could help

    Hi folks,

This is an older track (about 18 mths old). Acoustic drums this time (not Superior/TD12). We've somehow managed to lose all the original session & wav files, so this is the final mix. Curious to see if it's OK as it is... or whether we need to re-record & re-mix. Any feedback appreciated.
