I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not but recent? Richard D James (or Aphex Twin) has been putting out music for about twenty years now. Possibly the most influential Irish artist of all time. :D

I Googled him (because anyone who listens to Takemura must be someone truly amazing!!11), so I knew he'd been around- I just call anything I haven't heard of hip, cool and recent.

Remembered this for some reason today.

It is amazingly difficult to find the proper version of this song on Yewtewb. (This guy had to add the 'Don't' at the start just so it wouldn't be taken down.)

Extrasupervery has made my day music-wise:
This is me set for the exams

    Don't worry,I'm yours

I knew I added you on Facebook for a reason :D
In fact A Neurotic made your day, he posted that song to my wall.

I listened to a Mountain Goats album earlier. I'm not exactly up to date with contemporary singer/songwriters but John Darnielle must definitely be near the top of the pile.

'This Year' was a bit of an anthem for me during 6th Year and the Leaving Cert because of its "I am gonna make it through this year if it kills me" chorus. It's actually about the absue inflicted upon Darnielle by his father, but it's still astoundingly inspirational.

Here's a more tense but equally brilliant song:

Absolutely nothing to do with this post, but I want to get into some of Frank Black's solo stuff, can you recommend some of the better albums?

    :)

EDIT: Actually, while I'm here, I might as well post some stuff...

The 3 covers we're playing tomorrow night at our first gig. Listening to them over and over atm :p

You came to the right man Boba. :p All his solo stuff is available to listen for free(!) on his website

Start with his first solo album, the eponymous one, it's really poppy but it's his most Pixies-like (check out 'Parry The Wind High, Low' for instance).

Teenager of the Year is poppier still, but it's amazing.

Bluefinger, Nonstoperotik and Svn Fngrs continue in a fabulous Pixies vein. I'd avoid the Catholics stuff for now, as righteous as some of their albums are, unless you're big into the Stones or classic rock in general, in which case you'll like them a lot.

edit: (Y) to the Cars and Who songs.

Yeah it's amazing how some people can dismiss an album that contains the likes of Blow Out, Stop Whispering, Anyone Can Guitar, You, Been Thinking About You, Creep...

Was reading through a certain blog (<_< >_>) and I read a lyric of this song! I completely forgot about this for like a year. Savage stuff. :D

I love making my through their discography starting with Pablo Honey and going through it chronologically. Their progression is astonishing. I don't think any other band (except maybe The Beatles) was able to so successfully reinvent their sound so distinctly with each album.

Reinvention? Pablo Honey to the bends was just an evolution of their sound. Neither album were anything ground breaking.

Yeah it's always great for a band to evolve their sound, but as you say Radiohead somehow manage to reinvent it and continue to make it amazing.

That reminds me of my urgent need to acquire every Beatles album. Only have Let It Be, Magical Mystery Tour and Revolver. Can't believe it took me nearly four years for me to properly check them out. I should have been listening to that goodness in TY!

just watched the music video for M.I.A-Born Free .it was banned on youtube,I can see why it's terrible and pointlessly OTT,plus the song isn't that good.

it's basically the cleansing of the ginger kids from an area,I'll admit I'm biased but WTF?

    something more motivational:

just for the first minute of the song

Notice the Irish accent and the "Our Day Will Come"? Notice the fact that it's in America?.......there's a huge problem with illegal Irish immigrants over in the US......they might have been getting at something a little beyond cleansing the gene pool.....

oh yeah,it's based on the IRA,see the typical mon on the wall? And the raiding of the house. The IRA were one of the only terrorist groups to take their targets out of their house and leave everyone else untouched.

still what's the point of the violence and nudity? Unless they are terrorist sympathisers[not impossible given the history]

Listened to new albums by The Fall and the New Pornographers this afternoon. This song is just glorious. Summer anthems ftw.

I dont think it's to do with the IRA, just something to make the whole Irish connection a bit more blatant, that said, I could have entirely missed the point. I do however think the whole raiding and only taking the one person is just a coincidence.

    Sensationalism.

To provoke discussion (I'd say not even half the number of people who watched the video would have seen it, had the video not been so shocking).

That and it's fúcking genius promotion on M.I.A's part, epic viral promoting.

yeah it is! it's working well,we're discussing it right now.It still doesn't change the fact that it's a bad video and the song is less then awful

if you want a really well put together video:

the video is about sex, that's all I need to say

I <3 that album and especially that song! Very sad when you think most of it was written in relation to Syd Barrett.
