Chopsticks vs Forks

I've tried to eat Asian food many times with chopsticks but in the end I give up and resort to my trusted friend 'the fork'. I realise that it would probably be more courteous and respectful to use chopsticks but f*** it, it's just a pain in the a*** when it comes to shovelling food down your gob. Where do you stand on the debate?

Sushi is manageable, it's a solid piece. But when it comes to lifting loose rice, I'm buggered.

Ahh, chopsticks. My humble and faithful friend.
Gather round, young grasshoppers. I shall teach you the art of Chop Suey.

    Translation: I am a mother****ing ninja.

Do you see Asian people eating steak with a chopstick?

No, they use a mother fckuing steak knife.

Translation why should I use matches to eat my dinner just because it's a chinese take away.

I don't use my fingers when I order Mexican.

    Get the hint.

The trick there is the rice itself. You notice if you get rice at the chinese its very starchy? When its cooked right, rice is meant to clump together naturally. But I mean hell, even I wind up making rice loose. I add 1/2 tsp olive oil, which is a big mistake, actually. But then again, im not cooking it to be eaten with chopsticks the vast majority of the time.

Actually they use a meat cleaver and slice it up, throw it in the pan, and do it stir-fry. T-Bones and ****? Usually become soups.

What's wrong with using a spoon, it collects more than a fork?

Well, I'd like to think my eating habits have progressed beyond that of a 5-year-old. :)

    I'm talking about loose rice.:(

The type that falls off anything other than a spoon.:pac:

For forks sake, give me a break.:(

You should be using whatever sauce it's with a glue. Tricky with chopsticks but with a fork, easy as pie. (Try eating a pie with chopsticks :()

I used to know how to eat with chops, but its tedious. I can't get the hang of scooping up more than a small bit of food at a time-smaller than I want to bite, so I'd just rather use a fork. I'm not Asian, hence, I didn't grow up using them. Of course if you did then I'm sure it's second nature, but for the rest of us...

You should have spoon and Chopsticks option as you have to use a spoon to eat some Asian food.

    Ever ate soup with chopsticks?

A spoon is kinda irrelevant since you'd use a spoon for soup even if you used a fork for other food.

You always get a spoon and chopsticks in most Chinese places even if you’re not having soup.

Just for the record, chinese rice is cooked stickier and is easier to mush together into lumps, so chopsticks work.

[JUDGEMENTAL]Using a fork in a nice chinese place should cause you shame, it's one step away from walking in there and demanding a burger or something.

And eating anything solid with a spoon is the mealtimes equivalent of having your mittens pinned to your jacket.[/JUDGEMENTAL]

Rice is not solid though, even when coated with sauce.

    /there are always loose bits....

people who use chopsticks are one of 4 people:

    1) Asian (thats a good excuse!)
    2) **** (like to show off their worldliness)
    3) Eat slow (another reasonable excuse.)
    4) Eat slow show offs (these are the sneaky kind who cover up their show off worldlinees with crap excuses)

I've looked into this. Trust me.

Why in God's name would you be ashamed? You are there spending your money in your country and if you feel more comfortable using forks which is what you've been brought up with then I don't see why you should be looked down upon. You should certainly try chopsticks but if it's not for you, it's not for you.

It interesting how people put Chinese food up on some kind of pedestal. I'm the paying customer and as long as I'm not falling round the place drunk or being obnoxious, what does it matter what eating implement I use?

People eat rice with forks all the time. Dont make out that it's some Sisyphian task.

I actually cant picture in my head what someone would look like eating rice with a spoon.....well I can but they're holding the spoon in a clenched fist.

This exchange is actually blowing my mind............ a spoon........ madness.

Maybe I'm just sensitive, but the idea of asking the waiter for a fork when everyone else is using the utensils provided........urgh.

It's saying 'I am incapable of using this simple tool, provide me with something simpler'

It's not specifically about chopsticks, I would be ashamed to ask for a set of chopsticks were i incapable of using the fork provided.

Maybe you should hold that feeling for when they spit in your face for disrespecting their culture?

It's more saying "I'm much more capable using a different tool, can you provide me with one of those"

At least we agree the fork is a simpler tool to use.

That's one way of looking at it.

I suppose if you couldn't figure out a fork you would be perfectly within your rights to just use your fingers.

While you're at it why not get chips instead of rice?

The tradition with sushi is to eat it with one's fingers. Eating sushi with chopsticks only took off when American-style sushi rolls (rice on the outside) became popular.
