Is "Olympic Trap" a good disciplin to be practicing clay shooting on if I am interested in Sporting Shooting. Is the speed and the variation good at sharpening me up or is it making me react too quick.
Would like to hear some good experienced shooters opinions.

yrah skeet is better much better for sporting practice i should think, has everything ya need really incomers, goin away birds, crossers high and low..... its what digweed shoots when practicing so it must be good:D(though he doesnt practice much he says, )
and no i dont know him:o,,,,,

or you could always get a few traps and find somewhere to set up ypourself, we practice in a bog.....:D

Why not shoot the sporting and compact layouts in a few different clubs for practice

no OT will make you jumpy .

national skeet is good also some DTL ,if you want to shoot sporting , practice it .
i used to shoot 50 targets every eve and the odd eve more .

a good practice of 50 targets is better than blasting 100s of shots into the air.

when practicing use a tighter choke than you would in competition ,i always practice with full and extra full .

one thing i have noticed over the years of competition shooting is so many people dont know how to stand correctly .

learn how to address a target .

mmm very hard to give tips without knowing your right handed or left handed, shoot with both eyes open(which is better) or close one(like me:rolleyes:).... basically i suppose if shooting sporting crossers anyway, make sure you are comfortable when pullin the trigger not stretched one way or another, there are diff ways to shoot , i try come up from behind the target pass it and shoot, keeping the gun moving, you usually or should pick up the line of the target and then it is getting the lead right depending on speed ,direction etc.... there are coaches on here that will explain it much better i am sure.....

if starting from scratch i would say get a lesson or 2 then you wont pick up too many bad habits from the off,

Do yea not think the unpredictability of the target in OT is good for practice. I though it would steady up the gun because of holding to see line of target and also getting on line of target quicker. Mosting sporting clays are slower than OT and maybe if familar with OT it would make sporting easier.
    Do yea agree or not

Right handed, both eyes open. Always feel I dont keep the gun moving enough on dtl. Not a problem on springing teal, crossers or droppers. Just seem to want to aim and point on dtl ? Why ? I dont know. Ideas to break this habit?

DTL i just hold rock steady until you see the target move through it and shoot .i dont know how i shoot DTL realy ,i just whack em quickly, the longer you leave them the harder it gets ,angle ,drop ,wind .

the problem with DTL it looks so easy and you have to much time to think .

i do thing if you can shoot sporting well , you can shoot any discipline well .i would go far as to say sporting shooters are the best all round shots .

If it is the 'unpredicatability' you are after then there are far more ABT layouts than OT
Nothing like a good ol flurry for a bit of craic either.

But if it's simply practice you are after then like I said go to a few ranges and shoot their compact sporting or fuill sporting layouts and you will be practicing most birds without knowing the expected flight of the birds as you probably do on your own range.

to get back to the original question, i think the best discipline to practice for sporting ..... is sporting:D... or skeet, compact sporting would be grand too, i would say shoot them all:D and you will find out which suits YOU best....:D

I have been practicing on Sheet and I find it very good. I am actually really enjoying the Skeet shooting I have also done compact sporting but do you think they tend to have the kill zone very close which does not relate to most sporting shoots.

when your shooting a 50 m target giving it 15m lead and shooting 8m under it ,with 3/4 choke edge on ,and blowing it in bits your in the zone.

What I meant is that you wont be getting any 30-40mtr shots in any of compact sporting shooting that i have seen, but you will get some in sporting competitions. I can see what you are saying with tight chokes and a small target but I am not sure if that is the best way to practice sporting shooting..

no point practicing something you can hit .

if you shoot a full choke in practice and in competition shoot a quarter if the target allows ,the nerves some feel this can make a difference of a kill or not .

the more looking the better i shoot .the way i look at it is .i won the first south east championships in sporting there was a 170 shooters 169 wanted to win it also .
train hard fight easy . sas motto , also mine .
