ya there must be something up on your end, cos it has to work,
my host file looks like this , if it makes any difference ?
    # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
    # 127.0.0.1 localhost
    #    ::1             localhost

Adding a question. I've little knowledge but a friend of mine in Camen where the laws are very lax bought a jailbroken phone from a shop and was told not to update... anyway he did and now its locked.
He says that he thinks cydia was on it.

So, if lets say the shop loaded cydia and saved the SHSH file its there for him to get.
When a phone is updated to 3.1.3 and then locks will he have access to the apps? How will he know if the SHSH file is saved? Or is it just a case of going thru the motions (ie is there a quicker way to find out; say redownload cydia, possible?)

If I uninstalled cydia from the iphone would that have removed my SHSHs from Saurik's server. Because I know I had them stored and I'm still not able to downgrade to 3.1.2

the only way you will know is to edit your itunes host file with the cydia server details, (instructions here all over the place) download a copy of 3.1.2 firmware and try and downgrade, it will let you downgrade if the shsh's were saved,if not it wont, unless your friend personally saved those files, there is probably no chance the shop did it !

no uninstalling cydia will have no impact ot those shsh's stored,
    how could it ? !!:pac:
maybe someone swapped phones on ya ! cos i cant see any reason why you cant downgrade if you have followed all the steps correctly
its simple ive done it a few times,

Right I jailbroke the new firmware, downloaded Cydia and then downloaded fuzzyband and still can't downgrade the baseband. I seem to have the only baseband that hasn't been able to be downgraded yet. is there anything I can do now?

3GS cannot be baseband downgraded ..only certain 3G using fuzzyband .

Its a 3G, but its one of the unlucky ones that can't be done.
Is it worth holding onto for an unlock or should I sell it and look to get another one that is or can be unlocked?

Ok another update to this long saga. I am emailing them now and they are saying they need me to get an 02 sim card and top up by £15 (not sure if it will be more in euro)
Anyway I have asked a number of times to explain how the unlock will actually occur and no answer so i'm worried that the process they are talking about is for unlocking the sim to all networks and not the iphone itself?

They unlock the iPhone, not the SIM (don't even know what you mean by a network-locked SIM as all SIM cards can be ported to another network).

You need to top up the PAYG credit on the phone by £15 (this is the ONLY way to pay for the unlock) and then fill in the online form on their website. Then, within 14 days, you will receive an unlock code through iTunes. You'll get a text from o2 when it's available. I presume it takes a lot less than 14 days though!

Hey I just got my mates phone. His other half arrived in Ireland with the phone. I'm looking for assistance on what to try next. To add to his problems it appears this phone is an 8gig which means its a 3g phone.

So anyway I try and get started with looking to see if the SHSH file is around, but I stumble at the start. I only have my sim card and when it links to itunes it says
The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iphone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier's store to recieve a replacement SIM card.

What should I try now? By the way I have edited the hosts file.

cool sounds like you have the jailbreak so, so now you just need to run a "unlock" app, theres are loads, check for your specific model and firmware, i'd say Ultrasn0w will work for you, its in cydia (you have a cydia app on the phones springboard now ?) think of it as a jailbreak search engine,)
i think, or you may have to add their repo first if its not

i was following this youtube vid which said to download fuzzyband which I did but I couldn't go any further as it said:
sorry, downgrading will only work with baseband bootloader 05.08.

    My mates phone info:
    (from settings/about)
    version 3.1.3 (7E18)
    Serial number 81833LS8Y7H
    Model MB046LL
    IMEI 01 171300 999414 1
    ICCID 8935 3020 9034 0246 342
    (from fuzzyband app)
    modem firmware 05.12.01 (baseband)
    bootloader version 05.09[g2m3s2]
    baseband version ICE2-0.5.12.01

I will look for ultrasn0w and give that a go now.

I tried the ultrasn0w, but all I get after a reboot is "Searching"... I think he is screwed...

This method also works to restore iPhone 3GS devices to 3.1.2 instead of 3.1.3 for many that have encountered an error with sn0wbreeze (as long as you haven't panic'd and done a normal 3.1.3 restore via iTunes already).

If you have already restored on stock Apple firmware 3.1.3 via iTunes this guide may leave your phone unable to connect to the network (the 3.1.3 baseband and 3.1.2 firmware may not work well together).

I upgraded my 3GS via itunes. I had previously jailbroken my phone. And i had Cydia SSHS on file.

Is there anyway for me to dowgrade?

    yes,
go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts on your itunes machine
add this to the very end of the file and save
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

    download a copy of 3.1.2
go to itunes press shift and restore, go to where you saved 3.1.2, it'll downgrade for you

I really appreciate the response. But is there a more step by step insruction available?

to confirm, i have upgraded via itunes, to 3.1.3. I can downgrade this using Cydia?

*iPhone unlockers note that by doing this you can downgrade your firmware only, your baseband is still at 05.12.01 which is un-hacked at the moment.

you can only jailbreak it when you downgrade

Downgrade in 4 steps, doesn't get any easier I'm afraid, and it's the only way, your not actually downgrading as such, your restoring to 3.1.2, be sure to backup anything important and you'll have to rejailbreak to get cydia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,294 ✭✭✭Deedsie

And the baseband will change back to it's pre upgrade format?
