Facebook may have a shedload of funding behind it at the moment to keep it going for the forseeable but at what point do the investors say, eh hang on lads this isnt making us any money

    Look at their stats -

    http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics
    wrote:
Company FiguresMore than 400 million active users
50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
More than 35 million users update their status each day
More than 60 million status updates posted each day
More than 3 billion photos uploaded to the site each month
More than 5 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each week
More than 3.5 million events created each month
More than 3 million active Pages on Facebook
More than 1.5 million local businesses have active Pages on Facebook
More than 20 million people become fans of Pages each day
Pages have created more than 5.3 billion fans

3 BILLION photos a month, FFS, would probably fill eircoms data centre twice over, which would be more than a few $$$ a month!

I know it's really cool to say how crap FaceBook is.

Waheeyy!!! I'm cool at last!

Am I the last person alive without a facebook page? I'm with that_guy, I hope they disappear.

I don't have one. But I don't care if it disappears, the whole social networking gets a pretty big 'meh' from me.

(Apparently I'm cool, did you hear?)

Bebo was big in 2006 and, to a lesser extent, 2007. Since about the first half of 2008, nobody has really used it.

And 2008 was when AOL decided to buy it for $850 million. Who ever worked on that acquisition was a complete and utter fool. The fact they're planning selling it for what they paid for it just shows how out of touch they are.

As for facebook, it's actually making a profit. Their main revenue is from advertising but they're meant to be looking at additional revenue streams. Apparently they want to charge a tax on all the money people give to zynga and all those other games companies that use the site. If they do that they'll be ****ing rolling in it. Zynga make a lot of money from people buying stuff in mafia wars and farmville.

Tbh I'm much the same most of the time. But when I'm waiting ages in college for a computer and everyone, without fail, is on facebook playing farmville (I'm not exaggerating at all) it starts to get frustrating.

Anyway, if they had any sense they'd play Harvest Moon.

In all likelihood the sharpest minds of the day worked on that acquisition. The social and cultural climate changes like shifting sands beneath their feet. At that time bebo would have seemed like a good idea, same as now facebook and twitter seem like a good idea and some dolts probably think they have limitless potential and can't see beyond the end of their noses. Myspace at one point also looked like a good valuable idea. Of all these fads of ourtimes google will be left standing in 2015 (probably), Ebay & paypal possibly. Gmail & ms for sure pretty much the rest of the high traffic websites will come and go.

Things like facebook and bebo should be blocked on campus computers. At the very least it should be blocked at busier times. If people want to do that shít then they can use their own computer. I remember when bebo was huge, I went into the college and had to fire off a quick email to a lecturer. Couldn't find a computer free for the life of me. The day they blocked it was fantastic.

    Bye Bye Bebo

Not as clearcut as you may think ;)

A more polished approach than bebo it appears but as Bertie used to say "A lot done , more to do" and look where that ended up :D

They're still not blocked in UCD. They must think attendance will fall if they block them. (I'm not entirely sure if that's a joke.)

I don't know what Farmville is but I often hear it discussed. Something like Sim City I'm guessing?

As for Harvest Moon, I don't agree, they should play Harvest instead. It's a much better album.

Yeah pretty much sim city with a farm as far as I can gather from standing behind people playing it.

    Also :D Harvest.

What is there to understand about facebook FFS?

If you want to show your friends your holiday snaps email the f**king things to them, posting them online doesnt make it any less painful or make it *cool*.

No, but it does make it really convenient. They have managed to amalgamate peoples' information quite well, and linked them together. Fair enough if that's not your deal, but I don't see what's not to understand. I'm not even a particularly regular user, I just don't really get understand the vitriol based on how some retards use the site.

Facebook groups in support of random stuff, utterly pointless!

Stupid people will use any technology in stupid ways. That doesn't mean the technology itself is stupid.

The guy who sold it must be laughin all the way to the bank.. In fact, he probably linked the story on his facebook profile.

I dealt with the owner, Michael Birch, a few times and he was a great guy who escaped while the time was right. Many of the staff got great big payouts, and since have left for other projects.

There are some Irish peeps' who pocketed cash, I'm told.

I don't know which surprises me more; the fact that AOL still exists or the fact that Bebo is still going.

And, after AOL spent all that time making their brand look fresh. Wowsers.

    That_Guy wrote: »
Changing the profile layout was Bebo's downfall. It was just horrible imo.

Absolutely. The timeline was a dead idea from the start- the age group using it never harnessed other social activities- many used Bebo as their sole online outlet.

Twitter on the other hand has about three years left in it, unless they start making money from somewhere...

The only reason I'd be sad to see Bebo go is that there's a lot of photos on it I have since lost. Better get saving to my computer i guess.

Other than that, I havent been on it in the last year so , meh.

Will be funny when they start charging punters for the privilege of logging in, it'll happen and see how "neccessary" & "cool" FB is then :p

I see that you're not really getting it.
You are under no obligation to do any of the things your hyperbolic little hissy fit describes.
It's up to you how often and in what manner you use it. That's the point.

Though given you keep using the word cool in quotation marks I'm fairly confident that you decided that facebook was shit on a whim and you really don't give a fuck how valid your reasons are.

LOL at the hissy fit comment :D Calm down son.

Explain to me so....obviously its way over my head and all the other people who dont use it

A whim is when you decide to go for a pint or sit on your hole, deciding facebook was a little more calculated....1)What does it offer me? F**k all. Check. 2) Would I use it enough to justify it? No. Check. 3) Is it investment in time on it actually worth it? No. Check. 4) People who update their profile with random blurbs (twitter style) I just dont see the point, its irritating!

Theres just a few reasons, but in short you get a kick out of it then more power to you :) I just dont see the fuss tbh.
