I want to set up a mail server on ubuntu so i can send emails from php using the mail function.

The mails will only be sent locally. When I say locally I mean just to hosts on my lan. I want to be able to set up an email address for each person on the lan but all they need to be able to do is receive email. This is for a website from which they will receive emails.

Iv found a lot of guides on how to set up postfix etc on ubuntu but i am still confused. Can anyone here help?

Well, I have found some tutorials but I am still confused. I installed the PEAR packages, php-mail and php-net-smtp.

I restarted apache and followed the tutorial and put together a simple script to send a mail but then I ran the script and didnt receive any mail. The tutorial said that I would not have to install a proper mail server, just the two PEAR packages.

    Any suggestions?
