Absolute Beginner

Hey folks

Iv'e just started playing online and am seriously crap. I just picked up the game for the first time after hearing so much about it (modern warfare 2) I literally get one or two kills and get killed over and over again.

How is this fun? I would only ever have the time to play maybe 2 hours a week.

I'm getting the idea that this isn't a game you can just dip in and out of every now and again, but it's for hardcore gamers who put in serious hours.

You guys on this forum are pretty obsessed with it (and may or may not have lives) and I don't think I could ever compete.

My question is: should I just cut my losses and ditch this game given that I ain't gonna have time to invest in it?

It's entirely up to yourself, if you like the game, keep at it, as they say, you'll learn to be better...

If you can't see yourself liking it or more important, enjoying it, then by all means trade it in!

I was the same, only bought it about a month ago, but stuck with it and can hold me own in most matches now,best advice? stick to your teammates, going lone wolf as a newbie is suicide, watch their backs and learn the ins and outs of the maps, where are killing hotspots like the tunnel on Skidrow or the main building on Derail, stick with team games to begin with as you'll get slaughtered in FFA where everyone is gunning for everyone, no teams.

One thing to note when your new is don't sprint right into the fight with the rest of the team at the off as you'll get slaughtered, hang back and take their flank as most of the enemies will rush head on against your team and vice versa, go around the edge of the area (or watch your teams flanks) and pick off the enmies as they concentrate on the main body of your team, you'll be suprised how many players take no notice of their flanks or their rear, this gets you plenty of kills and teaches you the game without going head on into 50/50's with experienced enemies.

Then as you gain more exper. you can get involved in the main firefights and assaults as you'll be better at 1v1's etc or just stay as a sneaky fecker:pac:

If you like the game stick with it. Play through the single player and see if you like the feel of the game. Your at a disadvantage as others know the maps inside out. Play private matches to learn the maps and objective based games as people will be going for points and planting bombs instead of going for kills.

+1 on this, its very easy to get around a team on skidrow, quarry, derail, and rundown if you take a long route around behind them or along the outskirts of the map once you figure out where everyone initially rushes for, I got a 5 knife killstreak doing that once:D

At 2 hours a week it will take you 3.25 years to rack up my current playtime -

And I still suck!

And I have a life!

I play in matches and I see beginners getting scores like 3 kills 18 deaths , even no kills sometimes and I honestly feel sorry for them . If that was me I would have thrown the game away . I got it the day it came out . Its not your fault its the matchmaking system is horsesh1t . They should have a boot camp like in COD5 up to a certain level .
The only advice I can give you is .......don't be sprinting around like a lunatic (it takes to long to bring the gun up when you do) and when youre playing always always use cover . Use stopping power .......its the best perk in the game . What gun/perks are you using ?

This is the biggest issue I have with the game, the learning curve for new players is absolutely ludicrous, you're being thrown in there with guys who have been playing since day 1

exactly ......I can't understand why they have done nothing to sort it . I'd say plenty of people have just fired the game out . They just couldnt give a sh1t :mad: I've even sent messages to lads after a match when they go 0 kills 24 deaths like twice in a row . I get absolutely no enjoyment out of killing some poor noob over and over again like . What I would like though is a better connection :mad:

ya stick with it, it can be annoying at times, the game is very unbalanced compared with mw1,
but the more time you put in, you'll unlock better weapons and perks that can improve your game, and hey its only a game, who cares if you get pwn'd often, just have a laugh and enjoy it, you will get better, but it does take hours,

I used to be TERRIBLE at FPS's, the trick is to play against people who are far better than you, learn their tricks of the trade so to speak, if you have some mates who are really good, play with them in private matches for a while, get to know the maps and all the ins and outs, it's gonna suck intensely while you're learning the ins and outs because you will die a lot, but even if you only put an hour an evening into it, it will pay off eventually, it's really up to you whether you think it's a game you can get the hang of.

Listen this game pisses many people off

My friend started playing MW2 in the first day it came out. He stoped after 2 days. I got him back to play it and after few weeks of playing he is a great sniper now kd over 1 and he so much enjoys this game. This is shooter its all about skill and tactics which come with the time.

If you dont have time or dont really care about your lvl stats etc. Get group of people and have fun maybe in private ..

the only tip you need for starting off is...

don't run in open places stay out the sides and corners

keep checking behind you and all around you

then you will be fine

As far tips go as up said. And listen to the sound. People firing footsteps look around you and that will make you pro. Jusst takes some time. Go into private match run around maps to get to know camping spots so you will watch out for them later. Try out domination and stay back in it. Look at the map and stay close to your teammates.

Used to be absolute rubbish at this game also. after advice i got from reading a thread on here I learnt loads of good tips.
Always stay to the edge of maps
never run into rooms- flashbang/ grenade first.
Camp in high traffic areas. I know it annoys everyone but you need to get the kils to improve your weapons, add-ons.
once ya get a decent rifle with a red-dot sight,thus levelling the playing field with other players, then ya can start moving around.
Use the following perks, they work for me and I'm still only a beginner:
Scavenger- lets ya get ammo from dead bodies.
stopping power - makes you able to kill someone with less bullets.
at the early stages the other perks aren't really that useful.
always have a shotgun or similar powerful weapon as a 2ndary for inside rooms. you'll start getting kills easier this way -well i did.
I moved to playing free for all on ps3 and that improved my kill death ratio no end.
i only play infrequently as well and saw a difference straight away using these methods.
and I don't have to camp anymore as my weaponry is as good as most other players.

Start with the Single Player Campaign

Get a feel for the game mechanics and the guns. I'm an experienced COD player going back to the COD2 but despite that I made sure I went and played the Campaign first. My reason for this.. was I didn't play any COD for near 2 months before MW2 was released and was a good way of getting me back into the gameplay.

Know your surroundings

1st I do in COD multiplayer do is go into a private match on my own or with a mate or two and just leg it around the map. Checking out points of interest and the like.

Choice of gun

Tried to find the gun that suits your style of play as well as the map.
Have a selection of go to guns as well. I have a few that, I'm utterly comfortably using no matter how bad I'm playing. That being the M4, ACR, AK, Famas and Vector.

Choice of Perks

Perks well like guns it's up to you find out what suits your style(s) of play.

Killstreak Rewards
3(UAV), 5(Predator) and 7(Harrier)
I wouldn't budge from that set up much if I were starting out.
Sentry is handy if fending off a horde of enemies in an objective games.

Use your head

It sounds basic and it is, but people seem to struggle with it :pac: Always keep on the move. COD players more than any other FPS I've played will come back for revenge kills. So get a 1, 2 or 3 kills and move somewhere else. Use radar. I'm always glancing at my radar.
Remember any gun with no silencer attached will show up on radar, unless in Hardcore.
If enemy air support is destroying you and your team,, whip out an anti support class that includes cold blooded.
Listen out for footsteps.

There is more to it of course but that will come with experience and again, using you're god damn head.

You should go around the maps in a private match to get used to them, then watch videos of people playing those maps on youtube. Then you'll have a much better idea of where you should be

Setup a class like this, people will hate you for it but gives you somewhat of a chance while you are learning the game and most importantly, learn the maps. Stick to Team Based games.

Primary Weapon :: M4A1 - noob toob + heartbeat sensor (aka baby monitor)
Secondary :: PP2000
Equipment :: Frag or Semtex
Grenades:: Stun
Perk 1 :: Bling
Perk 2 :: Stopping Power
Perk 3 :: Steady Aim

M4A1 has low recoil, so easier to hit your target. You can progress onto other weapons later, e.g. Scar H. Bling gives you two primary attachments, you will need 15 kills with silencer attached to M4A1 before unlocking the Baby Monitor. This attachment basically picks up heartbeats of your enemies in the vicinity, comes up as a red dot so gives you an idea of where they are. Bear in mind, someone using Ninja as Perk 3 won't appear, so don't be fooled into thinking it's showing you all your enemies. Stopping Power increases the power of your weapons x 1.4. Steady Aim makes it easier to aim, certainly helps alot at the start.

I never can work out who's on my team? Sometimes the enemy are in Iraqi uniforms, sometimes in US... I cannot tell friend from foe :eek:

It would be great if there were a MW "Playschool" where we could learn slowly, rather than being thrown in with the big boys!!!!

Your team mates name is over their head in Green Lettering.
The enemy have Red lettering over their head.
If you are in a Party, your party team mates will have Blue lettering over their head.

Also, you should be using your mini-map more to get an idea who is around you. Green triangles are your teammates. If you are in an area with no green triangles around, it is possible you have drifted or will soon drift into an enemy spawn zone.

When you are starting out, maybe try to stay in areas with green arrows. That means mates can cover your back. But don't be standing right beside them as that aids multikills. Also don't be looking in the exact same direction, as that allows enemies to flank you all for cheap kills.

Stick with it for a while longer, the first 5 or 6 hours of online play are the worst. Once you start getting 7 or 8 kills a round you'll start to really enjoy it.

When you see a big red circle appear on the map and you're near a bunch of your teammates, RUN, thats a predator missile, and one guy is a waste of a target, 3 together is a nice juicy kill, so fcuk your teammates for that brief moment and leg it in the opposite direction

or head indoors, it staggers me how many people run out of a building when a predator icon appears, I just crouch down and wait it out, same as harriers

When you are beside teammates, run away. When you are on your own, don't move. Your movement will attract the eye of the guy moving the Predator and they are more likely to focus the target on you.

Interesting tactic albeit impossible, i would liken it not chewing a fruit pastille...........nerves of steel to not run when the big red target is looming in your direction, everybody sh1ts themselves and legs it to the nearest cover point only to be obliterated from above.

The amount of times I have dodged a Pred missile just by jumping is crazy, it's a last resort but could save you.

I was in estate once and a pred was coming my way, bit it hit the low wall outside the front door of the house and I was right beside it, never even damaged me, lol

I always throw in a jump at the last split second, mostly all it does it accentuate the blast and send me headlong into a wall or over a cliff, little bit of humour at the point of death takes away the pain i reckon:)

Persistance is yer man!

I too am not good but having ground my way up to lvl 30 odd i have perks and weapons which allow me to have the odd good game.

Great tips above, if you find yourself in a group of 69th lvl and prestige heads get out and find one with more modest achievements as then you have a chance.
If you see tallon in a game you are doing well NOW KILL HIM:D

I enjoy it greatly, i don't expect great things from myself and enjoy the odd killstreak. Since i got the stinger i really love taking down aircraft!
I even shoot predators for the thrill, not the lousy 50 points.

Check out the vids link here (tallons) the lads give good advice and you can see some of their good locations and tactics on the maps.

Don't get caught up in quickscoping, still can't do it myself but don't let that bother me as i can't give the game that kind of time to learn it.

Am a bit of a beginner myself- started this day last week and i'm up to level 22 atm.Have noticed a massive improvement since then.

mostly play ffa as i seem to do terribly in the team games.For me its all about lowering my expectations!! if i hit double figures i am delighted!played a game this morning and hit 21 which was a shock yet still get games where i'll get 3(esp TDM!)

have found that (as mentioned above) watching the killcams are very useful but having said that, there is only so much you can learn from watching yourself getting stabbed in the back!!
