Putting site on search engine

    Think I'm on right board. I want to put our web site on search engines so do I need to go to a a web designer or can I do it myself? I looked and some search engines charge so am I better off getting someone else to do who will give me SEO and more choice of listings?

    Got a good site from Customer Street in the UK but would now rather keep money in this country if we have to pay anyone.
