I'm trying to get the Wii working in high definition so I ordered a set of component cables on ebay.
I've the Wii set to 480p, Problem is when I turn on the Wii with the usb hard drive connected to the bottom usb it flickers badly on the screen, unplug the usb port and its perfect in 480p. Anyone know whats going on?

Does it do the same for other hard drives and memory sticks?

Does it do the same in both USB ports? (Although im not sure if that is a solution as you need to use the one your using for most apps afaik)

Does separating the wires help at all (especially the transformer of the HDD)?

Mine as no such issues, the HDD is obviously causing interference. Sounds to me like a dodgey ground or something. The cheapo cables are probably just not able to/dont cancel out the interference. Last week there I was setting up a Laptop for a guy at work and it had a similar problem, as soon as the psu was plugged in the monitor would flicker (was headache induceingly bad !). The "solution" was to use a decent quality VGA cable rather than the one that came with the monitor. I was really surprised how much of a difference the decent cable made, completely cut out the issue

Happens with both slots with the usb hard drive but not with usb key so I guess its a bad earth on the external hard drive. It actually starts to flicker when I bring the the usb plug near the socket but not inserted or touching even. Its a 5 yo cheapo Aldi hard drive which does get pretty hot, so I guess its time for a new one, suprised it lasted this long even
